To block adults-only games, put the child on a properly configured child account, set the platform’s age or content limit, and protect the parent account with a password or PIN the child cannot guess. On PS5, the child’s age and the selected restriction level determine which games can start. Xbox can filter by age and block or allow individual titles. Windows requires Microsoft Family Safety plus controls in each game launcher, such as Steam or another store, because a console setting does not automatically govern every PC copy.
After changing the settings, test the child account yourself. Ratings, menu names, and available features can vary by country and software version; use the equivalent highest-age category in your region when your system does not use ESRB ratings.
What “Adults Only” means and what a rating filter actually does
Adults Only (AO) is the highest category in the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) system. It is separate from Mature (M), Teen (T), and Everyone categories. A game can also contain chat, user-created material, web links, purchases, or other risks that an age-rating block does not address. Treat the rating filter as one layer of supervision, not as a complete safety policy.
ESRB’s parent guidance identifies two foundations: create a child account for each child and protect the parent account with a parent-only password or PIN. Once the child uses a separate account, the console or operating system can apply the correct age rules instead of trusting an adult profile that has unrestricted access.

Ratings are not identical worldwide. ESRB labels are used in the United States and Canada, while other countries use their own rating authorities and symbols. The controls described below may display a local rating scale or an age number rather than the words “Adults Only.” Choose the highest age category that your local system equates with the child’s permitted age, then verify the result with a test launch.
Prepare the family accounts before setting a game limit
Use a real child account
Add the child to the platform’s family group as a child or minor account and have the child sign in with that account every time. Do not share the family manager’s profile, a parent Microsoft account, or an unrestricted Steam account. A rating limit attached to the wrong profile cannot stop a child who is actually playing on an adult profile.
Lock the adult account
Set a console passcode, account password, or parental PIN that the child does not know. Avoid a birthday, school number, or a code used elsewhere. Store recovery details with the parent. If the child can switch to the adult profile, change its password before troubleshooting the rating setting.
Decide which risks need separate controls
Game ratings govern the game itself. Review communication and multiplayer permissions, user-generated content, web browsing, spending and purchase approval, and playtime limits separately. Modern consoles and family services expose these categories, but the labels and defaults differ. A blocked AO game can still leave a child exposed to unsuitable chat or videos inside an otherwise permitted title if those controls remain open.
Block adults-only and other over-age games on PS5
Set the child’s game restriction
- Sign in as the family manager.
- Open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management.
- Select the child’s account and edit parental controls.
- Choose an age-appropriate preset, or customize the game restriction if you need a different ceiling.
Under Sony’s PS5 rules, a game can start when its age rating is the same as or lower than the child’s age under the selected preset. A game above that level is blocked. If the child tries to start it, the console displays a request option rather than launching the game.

Handle a request without opening the library
The family manager reviews requests in Allowed Games. Approving a request adds that title as an exception; denying it leaves the age restriction in place. This lets you permit one specific game without raising the child’s general age level. Check the exact title before approving, because an exception is a title-level decision and may allow content that the preset would otherwise reject.
Keep the other PS5 controls aligned
Game-rating blocking does not automatically configure communication, user-generated content, web browsing, spending, or playtime. Review each category in the child’s Family Management profile. Enable purchase approval if the child can access the PlayStation Store, and keep the family-manager credential private.

Test the PS5 result
Sign out of the adult profile, sign in as the child, and try one game above the permitted age and one game at or below it. The over-age title should show the blocked screen and request option; the permitted title should start normally. If both launch, verify that the child is not using an adult profile and that the restriction was saved on the intended family member.
Stop M-rated and other over-age games on Xbox
Apply the console content limit
- On the Xbox console, open Settings > Privacy and online safety.
- Select the child’s account and open Content restrictions.
- Set the allowed age level for games and apps.
The numerical age setting maps to ESRB ratings and to the equivalent rating scale used in the child’s region. ESRB’s example illustrates the relationship: an age setting of 11 permits E10+ content but not Teen (T) or Mature (M). Choose the age that matches your family rule, not merely the rating of one game.
Use Xbox Family Settings for a stricter or more specific rule
In the Xbox Family Settings app, turn on content filtering and choose Allow Content Suitable for Age. The app also lets a parent block or allow an individual game regardless of its rating. Use an individual block when a game’s subject matter, online features, or in-game material is unsuitable even though its formal rating falls within the age limit. Use an individual allow when you have reviewed one over-age title and want to permit only that title.

Manage the same family from the web
Microsoft’s family website provides the same family-management controls for supported accounts. A console setting and a website setting should show the same child profile; if they do not, confirm that you are signed in to the family organizer account rather than a different Microsoft account. Turn on purchase approval separately when spending is a concern. Age filtering does not by itself prevent purchases.

Verify the Xbox behavior
On the child profile, launch a game above the selected age and a game below it. Confirm that an individually blocked title remains blocked even if its rating is allowed, and that an individually allowed title is the only exception you intended. Check the child’s account on every Xbox console used in the household.
Configure a Windows PC with Microsoft Family Safety
Create the correct Windows identity
- Create or use a child Microsoft account and add it to the family group.
- Have the child sign in to Windows with that account, not with a local administrator account or the parent’s Microsoft profile.
- Confirm that the child’s birth date and region are correct, because age rules use that account information.
Turn on Microsoft’s app and game filters
In Microsoft Family Safety, set the child’s age limit and enable the app and game filters. Microsoft describes these content filters as a way to prevent access to mature apps and games, and says they work on Windows and Xbox devices. The filter applies to the managed child account; it is not a universal lock on every person who uses the computer.
Cover games installed outside Microsoft’s own catalog
Windows can run games delivered by Steam, Epic, PlayStation, Ubisoft, or another launcher. Microsoft Family Safety’s filter does not replace the launcher’s own family controls, and coverage depends on the managed account and the platform distributing the game. Configure the relevant launcher as well, then test the exact executable or shortcut the child uses.
Do not assume that a console rule follows a PC download. PlayStation states that its console age-level, Allowed Games, playtime, spending, communication, and related controls do not apply to PlayStation games for PC. A child who can sign in to an unrestricted launcher account may therefore bypass a console-only restriction.

Restrict Steam games with Steam Families
Steam’s current parental-control system is Steam Families; it replaced Family View. Steam Families lets parents create a restricted library called Family Games and decide which games belong in it. Put only the games you have approved in that library for the child’s Steam account.
Build a restricted Steam library
- Set up a Steam Family with the parent account as the supervising account and the child account as a child member.
- Use Steam Families’ parental controls to restrict the child to the Family Games subset.
- Review the included titles whenever a new game is installed or shared through the family library.
This control is specific to Steam. Keep Windows-level restrictions enabled for games installed from another launcher, standalone installers, emulators, or a browser. If the child can use an adult Steam account, the Family Games restriction will not protect that account; secure the adult sign-in separately.

Allow one carefully reviewed exception
An exception is safest when it is narrow, documented, and reversible. First identify the exact title and edition, then check its rating and online features. Do not raise the child’s global age limit merely to unlock one game.
On PS5
Leave the child’s preset unchanged. When the child requests the blocked game, review the request as the family manager and approve that title in Allowed Games only if it meets your rule. Recheck the list after major system or account changes.
On Xbox
Keep the age filter at the family’s normal level and use Xbox Family Settings to allow the individual title. If a different title becomes unsuitable, block it individually without changing the age number.

On Steam
Keep Steam Families restricted to Family Games and add only the reviewed game. Remove it from that subset when the exception should end. The child should never receive the supervising account’s credentials as part of the exception.
Troubleshoot a game that still launches
The child is using the wrong account
Check the signed-in profile on the console, Windows session, and launcher. Sign out of every adult account, then test again with the child account. On Windows, make sure the child is not an administrator who can create an unrestricted local profile.
The rule was set on the wrong service
A PS5 setting cannot govern a PC copy, and Microsoft Family Safety cannot replace Steam Families or another launcher’s controls. Identify where the game was purchased and configure that service as well as the operating system.

Compare the game’s rating with the scale shown in your country. An age number may correspond to a regional authority rather than ESRB’s E, E10+, T, M, or AO labels. Select the equivalent highest-age category and test one known over-age title.
An adult credential was shared
Change the family-manager password or PIN, remove saved credentials from the child’s device, and sign out of the adult account. Reconfigure the child profile after the credential change.
A request or exception is unexpected
Review PS5’s Allowed Games list and Xbox’s individually allowed titles. Remove entries that were approved accidentally. On Steam, inspect the Family Games subset for newly included titles.
The game is permitted but its content is still unsuitable
Use the separate communication, user-generated-content, web, spending, and playtime controls. Rating filters do not evaluate every message, video, server, or purchase a game can expose.
Maintenance checklist for parents
- Keep one child account per child and one protected adult account for management.
- After every major console, Windows, or launcher update, test one blocked and one permitted game.
- Review the child’s age, country, and family-group membership when moving devices or regions.
- Audit PS5 Allowed Games, Xbox individual title overrides, and the Steam Family Games list.
- Check purchase approval, communication, user-generated content, web access, and playtime independently of game ratings.
- Change the adult password or PIN immediately if the child learns it.
With those layers in place, the child’s account receives only the games allowed for the selected age, while a parent can make a deliberate exception without removing the broader protection.
