The current official listing includes a Symfony 8 exam covering Symfony 8.0; it lists 75 questions, 15 topics, 90 minutes, English and a €250 voucher. Successful candidates receive Advanced Developer or Expert Developer status. Symfony does not publish the passing score.
What “Symfony Certified Engineer” means
“Symfony Certified Engineer” is a common way to describe the credential, but the official exam is titled “Symfony Certification.” The certification is intended to recognize developers’ Symfony expertise. The official FAQ lists a minimum age of 18; the reviewed official materials do not state an education or work-history prerequisite. A passing result earns one of two levels: Advanced Developer or Expert Developer. Symfony’s certification page and certification FAQ provide the current details.
Choose the exam version that matches your goal
The official page lists Symfony 8 as the newest exam version, and specifies that it tests Symfony 8.0—not Symfony 8.1, 8.2, 8.3 or 8.4. Older version options are also shown. There is no universal best version for every candidate: compare the work you want to demonstrate with the relevant version’s scope, PHP baseline and your readiness to study that syllabus. You choose the exam version when scheduling, not when purchasing the voucher.
Symfony’s January 14, 2026 announcement says the updated exam emphasizes understanding how Symfony works rather than memorizing method names and option spellings. Use the live version-specific exam page as the authority for the scope you will sit.

What the Symfony 8 exam covers
The current Symfony 8 listing specifies 75 questions across 15 topics, 90 minutes and English. Questions are true/false, single-answer or multiple-choice; you select answers rather than write explanations or code. The official page lists a €250 voucher. These are details of the listing checked in 2026 and can change. Check the live exam page before buying or scheduling.

- Twig, forms and validation
- Dependency injection and security
- Messenger, Console and automated tests
- Cache, Clock, EventDispatcher, Filesystem, Finder, Mailer, Mime, Process, PropertyAccess and Serializer
The listed exclusions are just as important for planning. The Symfony 8 exam excludes Symfony UX, Symfony AI, Doctrine and database topics, Monolog, third-party bundles and projects, AssetMapper, Webpack Encore, PHP Polyfills, unlisted Symfony components and third-party-service bridges. The FAQ summarizes the persistence-framework boundary this way: “The exam does not support any persistence frameworks like Doctrine. The exam only focuses on the Symfony core concepts (including Twig).” Check the selected version’s own list; older exams may have different coverage.
How to prepare effectively
- Save the syllabus for your chosen version. Turn every listed topic into a checklist item. For Symfony 8, keep its Symfony 8.0 scope in view.
- Refresh fundamentals with Symfony’s official learning materials. The documentation’s Getting Started material and quick tour point to a free video course and demo application for hands-on exploration.
- Study behavior, not only API details. Work through each included topic and practice explaining how components behave and how concepts connect. This aligns with Symfony’s description of the revised exam’s focus on understanding rather than recall.
- Use The Fast Track for context, not as a complete exam guide. Symfony describes Symfony: The Fast Track as a quick overview of building an application from installation through production deployment; it is not presented as a version-specific certification manual.
- Consider structured coaching only if it suits your needs. SensioLabs lists Symfony 8 Certification Online Coaching as 15 sessions of 1.5 hours each, in English, French or German, for €1,650. It is optional training, not an exam prerequisite. Confirm current terms on the course listing. The separate certification “Get Ready” page describes Symfony 7 coaching, so it should not be mistaken for the current Symfony 8 course.
Buy a voucher and schedule the online exam
The official exam page lists the voucher at €250. According to the FAQ, a voucher is valid for one year from purchase; you select the exam version when scheduling. The purchase page says vouchers are nonrefundable. Read the live purchase terms before paying because voucher terms and pricing may change.

- Buy the voucher through the official purchase page and retain its code.
- Schedule the exam and choose the version you intend to take.
- Prepare your testing setup: use a laptop or desktop with Google Chrome and the required exam extension, a valid photo ID and a stable internet connection. The FAQ recommends at least 1.5 Mbps upload speed.
- Set up a compliant room: take the test alone in a well-lit room, with no papers or additional devices available. Do not use websites or applications during the exam.
The exam is remotely proctored, and screen and webcam activity are recorded. The FAQ says recordings for successful candidates are reviewed before being destroyed. See the official FAQ for current test-day requirements.
Know the rescheduling and retake terms
The FAQ says rescheduling must happen before the original exam time. If you miss that deadline, the voucher is used and is not refunded or renewed. Arriving 30 minutes late or failing to attend also forfeits it. A failed candidate must buy another voucher to retake the exam. The purchase page describes a 30% discount using the previous voucher code after a recent failure; it cannot be combined with another offer. Confirm current details on the FAQ and purchase page before relying on them.

What you receive if you pass
The FAQ says successful candidates receive an official PDF diploma and a SymfonyConnect badge on their public profile, at Advanced Developer or Expert Developer level. Symfony does not publish a correct-answer threshold, so no specific pass-score claim is reliable. The FAQ also says certification standing does not need renewal; a certified developer may choose to take a newer version’s exam.
