The safest way to beat Adam Smasher is to keep moving, preserve your dodge or dash for rockets and Sandevistan attacks, and deal damage only during his recovery animations. Do not treat the encounter as a stationary damage race. Update 2.0 rebalanced the main boss fights and added armor penetration, while Update 2.1 made Smasher more active and gave him Sandevistan. A circular route around the arena, deliberate target selection and short attack windows matter more than any single weapon or build.
What changed in the current Adam Smasher fight
CD PROJEKT RED’s Update 2.0, released in 2023, rebalanced the game’s main boss encounters and introduced armor penetration for those bosses. That means an older strategy built around standing still and unloading damage is less dependable than it may have been before the 2.0 changes.
Update 2.1, also released in 2023, specifically improved the Adam Smasher encounter and gave him the ability to activate Sandevistan. The official REDstreams recap described the redesign as more adaptive and relentless, with Sandevistan modeled after Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. In practical terms, the boss can punish a predictable rhythm: hold one position, repeat one attack pattern, or spend every defensive cooldown at the start.
Later notes cited here do not document another combat redesign. Patch 2.21 discusses presentation issues, including Photo Mode appearance and missing glowing chest cyberware, rather than a new Smasher moveset. Update 2.3, released in 2025, lists the game on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and Mac, and states that the update is free for owners of the base game. The movement and timing principles in this guide therefore focus on the 2.1-style encounter and remain relevant on those supported versions.

Prepare before you cross the arena
Your preparation should make it possible to attack while moving and escape without waiting for every resource to recharge. The official 2.0 and 2.1 changes increased the pressure of boss encounters, so entering with an empty healing or mobility economy creates a problem before the first attack lands.
- Charge healing: Enter with your healing items available. A missed dodge or a bad rocket read should cost health, not the entire attempt.
- Charge grenades: Grenades are particularly useful when agile, ninja-type adds enter your immediate space.
- Bring a moving damage option: Choose a weapon, quickhack rotation or hybrid setup that still functions while you strafe. A build that needs a long stationary channel is vulnerable to rockets and Sandevistan pressure.
- Keep one mobility option ready: Preserve a dodge, dash or equivalent escape tool for a committed approach, a rocket barrage or Sandevistan activation.
- Save at least one major cooldown: Do not spend every high-damage or defensive resource during the opening seconds if your build needs it to escape a later sequence.
Difficulty, character level, perk choices, weapon tier and cyberware all change your margin for error. There is no authoritative universal level, health total or guaranteed time-to-kill for this fight, so prepare for a longer encounter than your best damage test suggests.
Establish a route instead of backing into a wall
At the opening, move around the arena in a broad circle. The goal is not to run continuously without attacking; it is to keep a clear lane in which you can retreat, sidestep or pass around Smasher when he commits to an attack. Backing straight into a wall removes that option and turns one missed timing check into several unavoidable hits.

While moving, watch Smasher’s animation rather than staring only at your crosshair. A completed heavy swing, a landing or another committed attack gives you a recovery window. Attack during that recovery, then leave before the next sequence begins. Melee players should use a short string and disengage after confirming the hit. Ranged players should fire while strafing instead of stopping to empty an entire magazine.
Think of every exchange as three decisions: where your escape lane is, whether Smasher is committed, and how much damage you can deal before that lane closes. If you cannot answer the first question, keep moving rather than forcing a shot.
Read the major attacks and respond correctly
| Threat or cue | What to do | When to attack again |
|---|---|---|
| Committed melee swing | Move outside the strike and avoid extending a combo into the next animation. | Use the recovery after the swing to land a short burst or melee string. |
| Heavy-attack warning area | Stop attacking and leave the marked impact zone. Do not cross it to chase damage. | Re-enter after the attack resolves and Smasher is recovering. |
| Rocket launch | Move away from the location where you were standing when the volley began. | Return only after the barrage ends, preferably while Smasher is in recovery. |
| Sandevistan activation | Break your attack, keep a clear escape lane and reserve mobility for his approach. | Resume pressure after the sequence has passed and you have a safe angle. |
| Adds entering your space | Eliminate the dangerous nearby enemy, using a grenade when an agile ninja-type add threatens your movement. | Turn attention back to Smasher once the immediate interruption is removed. |
Committed swings and recovery animations
Smasher’s most reliable damage windows occur after he has committed to an attack. Let the swing finish, sidestep or dodge the impact, and then punish the recovery. The same principle applies after a landing or another animation that temporarily prevents him from immediately following your movement.
Do not interpret a recovery window as permission to stand in front of him indefinitely. Melee attacks should be short and deliberate. Ranged attacks should be fired from a strafe, with enough magazine and stamina management to leave as soon as the animation ends.
Rocket barrages
PowerPyx’s guide advises moving because the rockets target the area where the player was standing when the volley started. As soon as the launch begins, move away from that original position. Do not run across the marked impact zone to obtain one more hit; the damage you gain is rarely worth losing your escape route.
Once the barrage ends, check Smasher’s position before returning fire. Re-enter while he is recovering, not while the warning area is still active. If your route takes you near a wall or corner, change direction early so the next launch does not trap you against the arena boundary.
Heavy attacks and warning zones
When a heavy attack produces a visible warning area, treat that area as closed space. Stop attacking immediately, leave it, and wait for the animation to resolve. A common mistake is to remain inside the warning marker because a weapon reload or combo is almost complete; cancel that action and survive first.

The best punish comes after the impact, when Smasher has finished the committed motion. This timing is useful for every build: a melee character can enter for a short combo, a ranged character can fire while circling, and a netrunner can queue a hack without sacrificing the escape lane.
Sandevistan pressure
Sandevistan activation is a disengage signal. Break line of attack, create space and keep your mobility resource available for the approach that follows. The official recap says the redesigned boss adapts to player tactics and is more relentless, so repeating a stationary pattern is less reliable than rotating movement, cover and attack timing.
Do not spend every dash, dodge or other escape tool as soon as Smasher activates Sandevistan. Move normally while you have room, then use mobility when he commits to closing the distance or when the route ahead would otherwise be blocked. Once the sequence ends, resume the same recovery-based attacks rather than trying to out-damage the accelerated pressure.
Choose targets without forcing unsafe shots
For ranged players, PowerPyx recommends shooting Smasher’s right arm—on the player’s view, this appears on the left side of the screen—to reduce his melee threat. The same guide recommends damaging the back-mounted rocket launcher when it is exposed. These are opportunity targets, not mandatory objectives.
- Keep your movement route intact and wait for an exposure that does not place you in a warning zone.
- Take the arm shot when the angle is safe, especially after a committed melee action.
- Shift to the back launcher when Smasher turns or another recovery animation exposes it.
- Return to general body damage when the component is covered rather than standing still to manufacture an opening.
A component shot that forces you into a rocket impact area is a bad trade. The target priority improves the fight only when it fits the movement plan.
Handle adds without losing the boss
Lesser enemies matter mainly when they enter the space you need for dodging, strafing or retreating. Do not abandon Smasher every time an add appears at a distance. Instead, identify whether the enemy can interrupt your next movement cycle.
- Immediate threat: Eliminate an add that is close enough to block your route or stagger you during a Sandevistan or rocket sequence.
- Agile ninja-type add: Use a grenade when it closes quickly and threatens to stay on top of you.
- Distant or harmless add: Continue circling and keep pressure on Smasher until the enemy enters your immediate space.
After clearing the dangerous target, return your attention to Smasher. Spending too long cleaning the arena gives him more opportunities to restart his pressure cycle while you are looking away.
Build-specific game plans
Ranged or hybrid builds
Carry at least two effective ranged options. Two weapons give you a way to keep dealing damage when one needs to reload, has an unsuitable distance or cannot exploit the current component angle. Fire while strafing, use the arm and launcher exposures when they are safe, and reserve a high-damage cooldown for a confirmed recovery animation.
Avoid standing still to empty a magazine. Reload during movement, after leaving a warning zone or while Smasher is committed to an animation. If a rocket volley begins during a reload, prioritize reaching safety; the next recovery window is more valuable than a risky partial magazine.

Close the distance only after a heavy attack has missed, completed or otherwise left Smasher recovering. Use a short combo, confirm the hits and dodge out before the next pattern starts. The current Sandevistan behavior makes prolonged face-tanking especially dangerous, even when your build is designed for close-range damage.

Keep the circular route in mind while attacking. Enter from an angle that leaves open floor behind you, and do not let a successful combo carry you into a wall or a marked impact zone. If the warning area appears, abandon the combo immediately.
Netrunner builds
Queue quickhacks during safe movement windows and retain enough RAM, health or cooldown capacity to survive the next approach. A single control hack should not be treated as a permanent lock: the official redesign emphasizes adaptation and pressure.
Use movement to create the time needed for your hack sequence. If Smasher activates Sandevistan, stop trying to finish a long stationary setup and move first. Resume hacking once you have a clear lane and an animation that limits his immediate response.

1. Open by mapping space
Begin by establishing your circular route rather than immediately spending every cooldown. Note where a wall, corner or hazard could cut off your escape. Keep enough room to move away from the location targeted by the first rocket volley.
2. Test his commitment
Use light pressure while circling and watch for a committed swing, landing or heavy-attack warning. This first exchange is about learning the timing of the animation, not proving your maximum damage output.
3. Punish, then reset
When the attack finishes, deal a short burst or combo during recovery. Leave before the animation cycle restarts. Resetting your position after every punish keeps the next escape lane available.
4. Treat rockets as a movement check
At launch, move away from the place you occupied when the volley began. Do not chase damage through the marked zone. After the barrage ends, return only when the boss is recovering.
5. React to Sandevistan without panic
Break your attack, maintain a clear lane and spend mobility when Smasher commits to the approach. Avoid exhausting every defensive resource at once; you may need another escape before the fight ends.
6. Take component shots opportunistically
Use safe openings for the right-arm shot and the exposed back launcher. If the angle is unsafe, continue moving and attack the main body during the next recovery instead.
7. Remove only disruptive adds
Clear enemies that enter your immediate space, with grenades available for agile ninja-type threats. Then turn back to Smasher rather than trying to empty the entire arena before resuming the boss fight.

Why common approaches fail
Standing still to win a damage race
Update 2.1’s Sandevistan and the more adaptive behavior described by CD PROJEKT RED make a stationary exchange unreliable. Even a high-damage build loses its advantage if it cannot leave a rocket zone or avoid the next committed attack.

Straight-line retreat removes the room needed to sidestep, pass around Smasher or move away from the rocket target area. Begin circling before the wall becomes a problem.
Chasing component damage
The arm and launcher are useful targets only when exposed safely. Crossing a heavy-attack warning area or standing in a rocket pattern to force a component hit exchanges guaranteed danger for optional damage.
Using every cooldown at the start
Opening bursts can look efficient, but they leave no answer for Sandevistan pressure or a late rocket sequence. Keep at least one mobility or high-value resource for a confirmed need.
Clearing every add before returning to Smasher
Adds are a priority when they threaten your immediate movement, not automatically whenever they spawn. Overcommitting to distant enemies lets the boss continue his pressure while your attention is elsewhere.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDifficulty, equipment and expectations
Your exact margin for error depends on difficulty, level, perks, weapon tier and build. The available official material does not establish a universal health total, required level or guaranteed completion time, so any guide promising one damage threshold is overstating what can be applied to every character.
Use the encounter’s feedback to adjust: if you die while trapped, improve route discipline and save mobility; if you survive but deal too little damage, add a second ranged option, improve component opportunities or reserve a burst for recovery windows; if adds interrupt every exchange, carry grenades and remove only the nearby threats before resuming the boss.
Current-version notes
The combat changes that matter for this strategy are the Update 2.0 boss rebalancing and armor penetration, followed by Update 2.1’s improved Smasher encounter and Sandevistan activation. Patch 2.21’s documented Smasher-related notes concern visual presentation rather than combat behavior. Update 2.3 confirms current availability on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and Mac and identifies the update as free for owners of the base game.
Whether you play the base game or the Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition, apply the same priorities: preserve a route, attack recovery animations, move away from the rocket launch position, disengage during Sandevistan and clear only adds that threaten your immediate space.
