To batch-resize videos for a YouTube playlist stream, use FFmpeg for a repeatable command-line workflow or HandBrake for a graphical queue. Before processing the full collection, decide how footage that is not 16:9 should fit a 1920×1080 frame: preserve the whole image with bars, crop the edges, or—usually a poor choice—stretch it. Then check a sample output and compare its format, frame rate, scan type, and bitrate with YouTube’s upload guidance.

A YouTube playlist of uploaded videos is different from a live stream sent through an encoder. Resizing prepares the video files; it does not by itself create or start a live stream.

Choose how each video will fit 1920×1080

1920×1080 is a 16:9 frame. If a source is already 16:9, scaling it to that frame can preserve its composition. For a differently shaped source, choose a framing method deliberately:

  • Fit or contain: preserve the entire image and add bars in unused areas. This is the safest option when nothing should be cut off.
  • Fill or cover: preserve proportions but crop part of the picture to fill the frame. Check that important content near the edges remains visible.
  • Stretch: force the image to 16:9 without preserving proportions. This distorts people and objects, so it is generally best avoided.

FFmpeg documents scaling and padding approaches for fitting footage, and explains that scaling normally preserves display aspect ratio. If a video looks stretched before you encode it, its displayed shape may be affected by pixel-aspect-ratio or display-aspect-ratio metadata; check that before trying to correct it by force. See the FFmpeg filters documentation and FFmpeg aspect-ratio FAQ.

Prepare the files before a batch

  1. Keep originals separate. Create a new output folder so the encodes do not overwrite your source videos.
  2. Inventory the collection. Note each file’s orientation, dimensions, frame rate, and whether it is interlaced. Also identify files with subtitles, unusual audio layouts, or HDR color that may need individual handling.
  3. Choose a representative video. Run a one-file test first, especially if the collection mixes formats or aspect ratios. Inspect the picture, sound, and output metadata before applying the same settings to every file.
  4. Decide on framing per source type. A single fit-with-bars rule is predictable, but mixed portrait and landscape footage may need separate treatment. Do not upscale with the expectation that it will create detail missing from a lower-resolution original.

YouTube says interlaced material should be deinterlaced before upload; its example converts 1080i60 to 1080p30. Preserve the recorded frame rate where practical rather than changing it just to reach a target dimension. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.

Batch resize with FFmpeg

FFmpeg is suited to scripted, repeatable conversions where you want the same filter chain for a set of files. The Bash example below handles common .mp4 inputs in the current directory, writes separate outputs to resized, scales each picture to fit within 1920×1080, and pads the remaining area black. It uses H.264 video, AAC audio, and fast-start MP4 layout as practical starting settings—not universal quality or compatibility guarantees.

    -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -movflags +faststart
    "resized/${base%.*}_1080p.mp4"
done

The scale filter’s force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease behavior fits the picture inside the requested frame while preserving its proportions; pad fills the unused area so the canvas is exactly 1920×1080. FFmpeg supports filtering while transcoding; consult its command-line documentation and filter documentation.

The loop does not set a new frame rate, so it does not intentionally replace the rate of each recording. It is not a universal batch recipe: it only selects MP4 files in the current directory, and does not explicitly handle subtitle streams, unusual audio layouts, HDR-to-SDR conversion, variable-frame-rate edge cases, or all metadata and rotation cases. Check stream mapping and color handling for your actual files; do not run the full collection until the sample output is acceptable.

If you prefer cropping to bars

Use a scale-to-cover approach followed by a centered crop, then inspect the result for cut-off edges and important content. The correct filter details depend on source orientation, pixel aspect ratio, and whether cropping is acceptable. Do not replace the fit-and-pad filter with a bare scale=1920:1080 command without understanding how it will handle aspect-ratio differences.

Batch resize with HandBrake

HandBrake offers a graphical queue and documents Creator presets intended for video-hosting services such as YouTube and Vimeo. For a GUI workflow, use its creator-oriented preset as a starting point, then confirm the dimensions and cropping behavior before queueing the files.

Check the outputs against YouTube’s guidance

YouTube’s published settings are recommendations, not mandatory bitrate limits. For 1080p, its current guidance specifies the following bitrates by frame rate and dynamic range:

For its recommended upload settings, YouTube lists MP4, H.264 video, progressive scan, and the frame rate used for recording. It recommends BT.709 for SDR and describes 16:9 as the standard computer-player aspect ratio, while noting that the player adapts to other uploaded ratios. Deinterlace interlaced video before upload. The figures above are platform recommendations; a listed bitrate is not a required minimum. See YouTube’s upload encoding settings.

These are upload settings for video files. If you are sending a live encoder feed instead, YouTube’s Live Streaming API lists 1080p as a valid inbound resolution setting and points to its encoder recommendations; that is a separate workflow from preparing a playlist of uploaded videos. Common problems and fixes

  • The result has black bars. That is expected when preserving a non-16:9 picture inside a 16:9 frame. If you want the frame filled instead, use a crop-based fit-to-cover method and inspect the edges.
  • People or objects look unnaturally wide or tall. The picture may have been stretched, or its aspect-ratio metadata may be interpreted differently. Use a preserve-proportions scaling method and check the source’s display and pixel aspect ratios.
  • A low-resolution source looks no sharper at 1080p. Resizing changes the output frame dimensions; it cannot restore detail that is not in the source.
  • The output has the wrong frame rate or motion looks different. Avoid forcing a rate without a reason. YouTube recommends using the recording frame rate; verify the source and output properties.
  • Interlaced footage has comb-like lines. Deinterlace it before upload, following YouTube’s guidance.
  • Audio, subtitles, or color do not carry over as expected. The sample command is not configured for every stream layout or HDR workflow. Check the input streams and set mapping and color handling for the files in question before batching.
  • The command reports no matching files. The example searches only for .mp4 files in the current directory, not subfolders or other extensions. Run it from the folder containing those files or adapt the input selection carefully.
