To batch-convert a folder into separate H.264 MP4 files, run FFmpeg once for each input and save the outputs in a different folder. To make one continuous program instead, use FFmpeg’s concat tools—but the concat demuxer only works reliably when the clips have matching streams and compatible timing. A converted MP4 is a video file, not a live stream; YouTube Live has separate encoder settings for the feed you send to YouTube.

Choose separate MP4 files or one joined program

First decide what the finished result should be:

  • One output per source: Convert each file independently. This is the more forgiving option for a folder containing different codecs, resolutions, or audio layouts.
  • One continuous output: Join clips in a defined order. Use the concat demuxer when their streams are compatible; use the concat filter and re-encode when they need normalization.

FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation requires inputs to have the same streams, including codecs and time bases. Differences in resolution, frame rate, audio layout, or whether audio is present can prevent direct concatenation or cause timing issues.

Batch-convert each file in a folder

Check FFmpeg and make an output folder

Install FFmpeg for your operating system and confirm that the build includes the libx264 encoder. FFmpeg’s libx264 documentation describes its wrapper for the x264 H.264 encoder. Keep the converted files outside the input folder; otherwise, a batch loop may pick up its own outputs on a later run.

Use a shell loop

For a POSIX-style shell such as Bash, create an output directory and run this from the directory containing the videos. The example handles common video extensions, keeps each input’s base filename, and writes MP4s to converted:

mkdir -p converted
for f in *.{mp4,mov,mkv,avi,webm}; do
  [ -f "$f" ] || continue
  base="${f%.*}"
  ffmpeg -n -i "$f" -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac "converted/${base}.mp4"
done

This is a starting point, not a universal preset. The glob syntax shown is for Bash; other shells and operating systems may require a different loop. Add or remove extensions to match your folder. The extension is only a filename clue and does not guarantee the file’s actual format. The -n option prevents overwriting an existing output. If your input files may lack audio, the command may fail for those files because it asks FFmpeg to encode an audio stream; handle such files separately or explicitly map available streams.

Choose output quality and inspect results

The example lets FFmpeg derive dimensions and frame rate from each input, while converting video to H.264 and audio to AAC. For consistent output dimensions or frame rates, add the appropriate filters or options deliberately; do not force an arbitrary profile if it would distort the source or exceed your upload capacity. The source set, intended output, and FFmpeg build determine which options are appropriate.

For production batches, capture FFmpeg’s error output and verify the resulting files instead of assuming every conversion succeeded. Play representative outputs, check audio and picture, and inspect any files that failed before using them in a live workflow.

Join clips into one MP4

Use the concat demuxer for compatible files

Create a text file named list.txt with one entry per clip, in the intended playback order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
file 'clip-001.mp4'
file 'clip-002.mp4'
file 'clip-003.mp4'

Then run:

ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i list.txt -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac output.mp4

This re-encodes the joined result. The concat demuxer reads packets sequentially and adjusts timestamps so the first file starts at zero and later files follow earlier durations. It does not make incompatible inputs compatible automatically. If files differ in streams or parameters, normalize them to matching codecs, stream presence and layout, time bases, and compatible parameters first—or use the concat filter to re-encode the inputs into a common output.

-safe 0 relaxes FFmpeg’s path safety checks. Prefer simple relative paths and use this option only with a list you control and trust. Incorrect duration metadata or differences between stream durations can cause artifacts or gaps; inspect transitions in the finished program. See FFmpeg’s joining-files FAQ and concat demuxer reference.

Method Use it when Tradeoff
One transcode per file You need separate H.264 MP4 deliverables, especially from mixed sources. Creates multiple jobs and files, but lets each source be converted independently.
Concat demuxer You need clips in a known order and their streams are compatible. Can avoid re-encoding when configured for stream copy, but has strict stream and timing requirements.
Concat filter with re-encoding You need one joined output and clips require conversion or normalization. Requires encoding work, but supports a re-encode workflow for joining inputs.

Set YouTube Live encoder settings separately

A saved MP4 is an input asset; it is not the live encoder feed. When you send a live stream, use YouTube’s current Live encoder settings for the outgoing feed. The YouTube recommendations below were accessed on October 3, 2026; check the live page again before an event because platform guidance can change.

Recommended H.264 video bitrates

Output YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate
720p30 8 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps
1080p30 10 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps
1440p30 21 Mbps
1440p60 34 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommended settings, not measured outcomes or guarantees. Choose a resolution and frame rate that fit the source and a stable upload connection. YouTube also recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Other listed H.264 guidance includes progressive scan, square pixels, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 for SDR, and 128 Kbps stereo audio. The live guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS transport, H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps; use the H.264-specific bitrate table when encoding H.264.

Test the live feed

YouTube says to test before starting a live stream, including audio and movement similar to the planned content. Check the stream health and any messages during the event. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery.

Do not confuse live settings with upload settings

YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations apply to stored video files, not automatically to the live ingest signal. They include an MP4 container, H.264 video, AAC-LC among supported audio choices, progressive scan, 4:2:0 chroma, and fast-start placement of the MP4 moov atom. The upload guidance also describes variable bitrate and a closed GOP; live encoder guidance specifies CBR. Use the recommendation set for the workflow you are performing.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on a YouTube channel 24/7, converting files with FFmpeg is only one part of a do-it-yourself setup. StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos or playlists on YouTube, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.

  • Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  • Add your YouTube stream key once.
  • Go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.

Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded video on YouTube, not live camera streaming. See StreamNeo, then start your free first day.
