OBS can control peaks and smooth loudness swings within a lesson, but its built-in compressor does not automatically match the average loudness of separate lesson clips. To make lessons sound more consistent, balance each source by listening, use compression only where a source has distracting dynamics, and place a limiter last to catch peaks. Record a representative session and listen back before streaming.
What “normalize audio” means in OBS
There are two different problems that can sound like inconsistent volume:
- Lessons differ from one another: one recording is consistently quieter or louder than another. Adjust each lesson source’s gain or mixer fader by comparing representative passages.
- One lesson varies internally: quiet speech and loud passages are far apart. A compressor can reduce levels above its threshold, making the source’s dynamic range less pronounced.
A compressor does not guarantee equal average loudness across separate files. A limiter is a peak guard, not a tool for raising quiet material. OBS’s built-in tools can help manage levels, but matching clips takes listening and source-by-source adjustment. OBS Compressor Filter OBS Limiter Filter
Balance lesson sources step by step
- Identify the route each lesson takes into OBS. Lessons may be separate media sources, browser audio, desktop audio, or part of one mixed signal. Check that each is reaching the expected OBS mixer channel; exact routing depends on your scenes and capture setup.
- Set a clean starting level at the source. Start with the lesson’s player or application, then check operating-system levels and OBS. Listen at the device or application and again as the sound reaches OBS. Adjust one point at a time and avoid clipping. See the OBS Audio Mixer Guide and OBS Audio Mixer Technical Details.
- Compare representative passages from each lesson. Play speech or teaching sections, not just silence or an intro. Adjust each source’s gain or mixer fader until the perceived teaching level is similar. There is no universal fader value: the recordings themselves may differ.
- Add compression only to a source that needs it. In that source’s filters, add the OBS Compressor. A lower threshold starts compression earlier; a higher ratio applies stronger reduction above the threshold. Attack and release determine how quickly compression responds. OBS documents defaults of -18 dB threshold, 10:1 ratio, 6 ms attack, 60 ms release, and 0 dB output gain. These are starting defaults, not recommended settings for every voice or lesson. OBS says the compressor usually belongs near the beginning of the filter chain. OBS Compressor Filter
- Use a limiter last in the relevant filter chain. Add OBS’s Limiter after other filters to catch excessive peaks. Its documented defaults are a -6 dB threshold and 60 ms release; they are not mandatory targets. A lower threshold caps peaks at a lower level, but does not raise quiet sections. OBS Limiter Filter
- Record a representative session and listen back. Include lesson transitions and the loudest likely passage. Check that quiet speech remains intelligible, loud sections are controlled, and transitions do not create abrupt jumps. OBS recommends recording a normal session and listening back before going live. Choose filters for the problem you have
| Tool | Use it for | What it will not do |
|---|---|---|
| Per-source gain or fader | Baseline differences between separate lessons or sources | It requires listening and adjustment for each source or clip. |
| Compressor | Reducing loud passages above a threshold within a source | It does not ensure equal average loudness between lesson files. |
| Limiter | Catching peaks above its threshold | It does not bring quiet material up to the level of louder material. |
| Noise gate or suppression | Managing noise when needed | These are not tools for matching lesson loudness. |
OBS describes gain as a way to raise a quiet source. Use it cautiously and check peak headroom. Avoid stacking heavy compression and large output gain blindly: added output gain raises the post-compression signal and can use up headroom before the limiter. Set the chain against the actual lesson material rather than copying a preset. See the OBS Filters Guide, Compressor Filter, and Limiter Filter.

Read OBS meters without mistaking peaks for loudness
OBS explains that 0 dBFS is the maximum representable digital level; exceeding it can clip and distort the output. Its technical guidance describes a -20 dBFS alignment level chosen near average speech and a -9 dBFS permitted maximum level with headroom. These are OBS meter guidance, not a universal YouTube target. The guide also describes a VU indicator that integrates RMS over 300 ms, which is closer to perceived level than a peak meter, while noting the limitations of the meter. None of these figures is an integrated LUFS target for a YouTube study stream. OBS Audio Mixer Technical Details
Will YouTube balance lesson volume automatically?
YouTube describes playback enhancements that can make audio clearer or more balanced. Options include automatic adjustments to volume levels and sound mixing, Stable volume to reduce variation between quiet and loud parts, and Voice boost to highlight speech. YouTube says enhancements are not applied to every video, so do not rely on them to correct a mismatch in your OBS mix. Creators can manage the default setting for future uploads in YouTube Studio on a computer; viewer settings and accessibility preferences may also affect playback. Or let it run in the cloud
If your study stream uses uploaded lessons in a YouTube loop, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; StreamNeo also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Does OBS have a one-click normalize setting for all lesson clips?
No. Balance separate lesson sources by listening and adjusting their gain or faders; compression controls dynamics within a source rather than matching clips’ average loudness.
