Balance your 3D-printed RC jet using the center-of-gravity (CG) marks and instructions for that exact airframe—not a measurement copied from another jet. Assemble it in normal flight configuration, install and secure the specified battery, then check CG, lateral balance, controls, radio range, and the model’s prescribed launch method before flying.
Why there is no universal CG or setup value
A CG measurement only makes sense relative to the particular airframe and the datum its manufacturer specifies. For example, the J-10 EDF 64mm manual places that model’s CG 80–90 mm behind the main wing’s leading edge with the battery installed. The 3D LabPrint F-86A Sabre guide instead advises starting about 5 mm forward of its own CG tag. Those figures are not interchangeable: wing shape, size, and the location of the reference point differ. Follow the manual and revision for your exact jet.
The same caution applies to battery size and weight, control throws, and launch technique. If the manual is unavailable or its CG marks are unclear, identify the design and obtain its instructions rather than estimating from another model.
Balance the jet in its actual flight configuration
- Assemble the model for flight. Fit the EDF, receiver, wiring, linkages, and other normal flight components. Install the exact flight battery specified for the model.
- Secure the battery in its intended mount. Put it in the position needed to reach the model’s specified CG, then restrain it so it cannot shift in flight. The 3D LabPrint F-86A guide warns that a moving battery can shift CG backward and lead to uncontrollable behavior. A strap or suitable hook-and-loop tape may help retain a battery, but it must fit the airframe and does not replace a proper mount.
- Support the model at its own CG marks. Use the manual’s stated orientation and support method. A balancing stand can be used if appropriate; the J-10 manual notes this as an option at its marked points.
- Adjust only within the designed battery mount. Move the battery to attain the documented CG. Do not add ballast unless the model’s documentation calls for it.
- Check lateral balance. Verify the left-right roll-axis balance as the design instructions specify. Planeprint’s Seagull manual calls for this check in addition to setting CG.
Model-specific examples show why you should keep the aircraft’s own instructions at hand: the 3D LabPrint F-86A Sabre User Guide says, “For the first flights we recommend setting the center of gravity to around 5 mm forward of the CG tag – nose heavy, this increases the stability (you can use heavier battery).” That advice applies to the F-86A described in that guide, not to printed jets generally.

Check the controls, radio, and airframe
Make the propulsion system safe according to the model and radio instructions before handling control surfaces. Then use this checklist:
- Inspect the airframe, wiring, connectors, linkages, and control surfaces for damage, looseness, or interference.
- Move each control with the transmitter and confirm the corresponding surface moves in the commanded direction. Check travel against the exact model’s specified throws; there is no generally applicable throw setting for an unspecified printed jet.
- At the flying site, perform the transmitter’s ground range or reception check using the procedure in its manual.
- Stop if a control moves incorrectly, reception is unreliable, anything is loose or damaged, or the model behaves unexpectedly. Do not fly until the fault is corrected.
Choose the launch method and site the model requires
Use the launch recommendation for the exact design. Do not assume a small EDF jet should be hand-launched: one RC3DPrint guide recommends a takeoff roll rather than a hand launch for its model. Other designs may differ. Fly from a clear site with ample room, away from people and obstructions, and get an experienced pilot’s help if you are uncertain about the aircraft or its launch.

Check whether the jet suits your experience
Printed construction does not make a jet forgiving to fly. 3D LabPrint describes its F-86 as not a beginner plane and recommends prior experience. Treat that as advice for that model, and assess your own skills against the specific jet’s stated requirements. If the aircraft is beyond your experience, ask a qualified, experienced RC pilot for help rather than attempting a maiden flight alone.

Compare each model’s documentation, not isolated numbers from product pages. Useful points to check are the CG datum and range, all-up weight and battery specification, control throws, launch and landing requirements, and stated pilot experience. A CG distance in millimeters on one airframe cannot be ranked against a different airframe’s number without accounting for their separate reference points and geometry.
