Minecraft save transfers depend on the edition you play and whether the world is local or stored on a Realm. Java Edition local worlds are files on one computer; signing into the same Microsoft account does not synchronize them. Bedrock and Java Realms provide a practical cloud-based route between compatible devices, but Java and Bedrock worlds use different save formats and cannot be transferred by simply copying folders.

Before moving anything, check that you are using the same edition on the source and destination devices. The procedures below cover manual Java backups, Java Realm transfers, Bedrock Realm transfers, and the restore options that can undo unwanted changes.

Choose the right Minecraft save method

What you have Best transfer method Important limitation
Java single-player world Copy a backup or the world folder manually Microsoft account sign-in does not sync local saves
Java world and an active Java Realm Upload the world to a Realm, then use that Realm on another PC The world upload limit is 4 GB
Bedrock world and an active Bedrock Realm Upload the local world to the Realm, then download it on another device The world upload limit is 4 GB
Java world on one device and Bedrock on another Use a separate conversion tool or service Copying the save folder does not convert editions

Java Edition runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Bedrock Edition is available on Windows, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, iOS, and Android. These editions use different world-save formats, so the Java instructions in this guide do not apply to a Bedrock save, and vice versa.

Back up a Java Edition world

A Java world backup is a local file. Save it somewhere outside the Minecraft folder—an external drive, another computer, or a cloud storage folder—so it remains available if the original installation is damaged.

  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Open the Java backup folder from Minecraft

  1. Launch Minecraft: Java Edition.
  2. Select Singleplayer.
  3. Click the world you want to protect.
  4. Select Edit.
  5. Choose Open Backups Folder.

This opens the folder used for Java backups. Copy the relevant ZIP backup to a separate location. Do not treat the presence of a backup in this folder as protection against drive failure; it is still on the same computer unless you copy it elsewhere.

Find the backup folder through the Launcher

  1. Open the Minecraft Launcher and sign in.
  2. Open the Minecraft: Java Edition tab.
  3. Select Installations.
  4. Highlight the installation used to create the backup.
  5. Click the folder icon.
  6. Open the backups folder.

Use the installation that actually runs the world. Different installations can use different game directories, particularly when you use separate versions, modded profiles, or custom settings.

Manually move a Java world to another PC

Minecraft documents a backup-and-copy process rather than automatic Microsoft-account synchronization.

Find the destination saves folder

Operating system Java world location
Windows %appdata%\.minecraft\saves
macOS ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves

On Windows, press Win + R, enter %appdata%\.minecraft\saves, and press Enter. On macOS, in Finder select Go → Go to Folder, enter ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves, and press Return.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Linux installations commonly use the equivalent ~/.minecraft/saves location, although a custom Launcher installation may use a different game directory. If you use a custom installation, open its folder from the Java Launcher’s Installations page instead of assuming the default path.

Transfer the backup

  1. On the old PC, create or locate the Java backup ZIP.
  2. Copy the ZIP to the new PC using a USB drive, network transfer, or cloud storage.
  3. Unzip the backup on the new PC.
  4. Locate the folder containing the unzipped world.
  5. Move that actual world folder into the destination saves folder.
  6. Launch the same edition of Minecraft: Java Edition.
  7. Open Singleplayer and check the world list.

The folder nesting matters. The destination should contain the world folder itself, with files such as level.dat inside it. A common mistake is ending up with a structure like saves/MyWorld/MyWorld/level.dat when Minecraft expects saves/MyWorld/level.dat. If the world is missing, inspect the extracted folders before trying anything else.

  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable

Why a Java world may not appear

  • Wrong edition: You launched Bedrock instead of Java.
  • Wrong version or installation: The save was placed in a different game directory than the one the Launcher is using.
  • The archive is still zipped: Minecraft needs the extracted world folder in saves.
  • Extra wrapper folder: The world is nested one directory too deeply.
  • Incomplete copy: The transfer stopped or the source disk contained a damaged save.

Close Minecraft before copying or replacing a world. If the world is already present on the new computer, rename the existing folder before adding the transferred copy so you do not accidentally overwrite it.

Use a Java Realm to move a world between PCs

A Java Realm can act as a cloud intermediary for a Java world. This is different from synchronizing local single-player saves: you upload a chosen world to the Realm, then access that Realm from another computer using the same account and Java Edition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Upload a Java world to a Realm

  1. Launch Minecraft: Java Edition.
  2. Select Minecraft Realms.
  3. Select the Realm and choose Configure.
  4. Choose an empty slot, or select the world slot you intend to replace.
  5. Select Reset World.
  6. Choose Upload World.
  7. Select the local world.
  8. Choose Upload, then Done.

Uploading to a slot does not necessarily make that slot the active Realm world. Look for the green checkmark in the top-right of the world portrait; it identifies the active world. Verify the selected slot before joining from the other PC.

Java Realm uploads have a documented maximum size of 4 GB. A world that exceeds that limit can fail during upload.

Restore an older Java Realm world

  1. Open Minecraft Realms.
  2. Select the Realm.
  3. Choose Configure.
  4. Open the Worlds tab.
  5. Use World Backups to select an available snapshot.
  6. Restore the snapshot according to the confirmation prompts.

Realm backups are not permanent. If a Realm subscription expires, the world remains downloadable for 18 months, but backups associated with that Realm are deleted 30 days after expiration.

Move a Bedrock world through a Realm

Bedrock uses a different transfer workflow. Do not place a Bedrock world in Java’s .minecraft/saves folder and expect it to appear. Use the Bedrock Realm menus instead.

  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac

  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Upload a local Bedrock world

  1. Open Minecraft and select Play.
  2. Open the Realms tab.
  3. Enter Realms Hub.
  4. Open Worlds, then Slots.
  5. For an empty slot, select the slot and choose Create World.
  6. For an occupied slot, select the slot and choose Edit World.
  7. At the bottom of Game Settings, choose Upload World or Replace World.
  8. Select the local world and confirm the upload.

The labels indicate whether the destination slot is empty. Upload World adds a world to an available slot; Replace World replaces the world already occupying a slot. Bedrock Realm uploads are limited to 4 GB.

Download the Bedrock Realm world on another device

  1. On the destination device, open Play.
  2. Select Realms and open Realms Hub.
  3. Open the World tab.
  4. Select Slots.
  5. Click the three-dot menu next to Edit world.
  6. Choose Download World.

The downloaded Realm world is added as a local copy in the All Worlds tab. It does not silently overwrite a local world with the same or a similar name. You can then play the downloaded copy locally or continue using the Realm.

Restore a Bedrock Realm backup

Bedrock Realm saves are snapshots of the whole world, not separate repairs for one building, chest, or player inventory. Restoring one reverts builds, items, and other progress to the selected point in time.

  1. Open Play → Realms → Realms Hub.
  2. Open the Realm’s World tab.
  3. Open Saves.
  4. If shown, select Manage saves in old UI.
  5. Choose the Manual or Automatic tab.
  6. Open the three-dot menu beside the desired save.
  7. Select Restore save and confirm.

Minecraft notes that Saves → Manage saves belongs to the old interface. On a newer interface, the save controls may be exposed elsewhere inside the Realm’s World tab. If the exact label is missing, look there rather than assuming the backups have disappeared.

How long Bedrock Realm backups remain available

Realms automatically save progress every 30 minutes, when you select Save & Quit, and whenever you disconnect from the Realm. The documented retention schedule is:

Age of save Retention pattern
Most recent Four most recent saves
Within the last 24 hours One save every 4 hours
1–8 days old One save per day
9–36 days old One save per week
37–121 days old One save per month
122 days or older No saves retained

These retention rules make a Realm useful for recovery, but they are not a substitute for keeping an independent copy of a world you cannot afford to lose. Download an important Bedrock Realm world to a device before making a major change.

What does and does not sync

Signing into the same Microsoft account can give you access to the same Realm, but it does not automatically copy every Java single-player world between PCs. For a Java local save, manually copy the backup or move the world folder.

A Realm transfer is also edition-specific. A Java Realm carries Java worlds, while a Bedrock Realm carries Bedrock worlds. The account, world name, or computer does not change the save format.

FAQ

Does signing into Minecraft with the same Microsoft account sync Java worlds?

No. Java single-player worlds remain local files. Create a backup, copy it to the other computer, unzip it, and place the world folder in that computer’s Java saves directory.

Can I copy a Java world into Bedrock Edition?

No. Java and Bedrock use different world-save formats. Copying the folder does not convert it or make it appear in the other edition.

Where are Java worlds stored on Windows?

The standard location is %appdata%\.minecraft\saves. A custom Launcher installation or profile may use another game directory.

Why does my transferred Java world not show up?

Check that you launched Java Edition, extracted the ZIP, used the correct installation’s saves folder, and avoided an extra wrapper directory such as saves/World/World/level.dat.

Does downloading a Bedrock Realm backup overwrite my local world?

No. The downloaded world is added to the Bedrock All Worlds tab as a local copy.

Does restoring a Realm backup repair only the damaged area?

No. Restore reverts the whole Realm world to the selected snapshot, including builds and items.

What is the maximum Realm upload size?

Minecraft documents a 4 GB maximum for both Java Realm uploads and Bedrock Realm uploads.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

For Java single-player worlds, make a local backup and copy the extracted world folder into the other computer’s saves directory. For cross-PC convenience, upload the world to a Realm, but use the matching edition. Bedrock Realm downloads create local copies, while Realm restores roll the entire world back to an earlier snapshot. Keep an independent copy of valuable worlds because account sign-in and Realm retention are not the same as permanent synchronization.
