Make a fresh manual save at the last safe checkpoint, close the game normally, and verify that the newest copy has finished uploading or backing up before you enter hard mode. Keep a second, dated copy when your platform allows it. Never start while a cloud warning or conflict is unresolved: restoring a backup can replace newer progress, and some platforms cannot recover the overwritten data.
The safest pre-hard-mode routine
An unlockable difficulty attempt is safest when you can return to a known save from immediately before the attempt. The reliable sequence is:
- Reach the last checkpoint or other point you are willing to restore to.
- Use the game’s manual-save command and wait for its confirmation. Do not rely on an autosave that may run later.
- Exit to the title screen and close the game through the platform’s normal quit command. A clean close lets the platform finish writing and synchronizing files.
- Wait for the platform to show that the latest save has uploaded, backed up, or synchronized. Record the displayed time if one is available.
- Create an independent second copy when the platform supports one, such as a dated PC folder or a full console backup.
- Resolve every warning, failed upload, or cloud conflict before launching the hard-mode attempt.
Cloud storage is not automatically a historical archive. On many systems it synchronizes one current state, so a later save can replace the pre-attempt state. A backup is useful only when it contains the save you made before the attempt and you have verified its timestamp.

Save data may include campaign progress, inventory, settings, and a difficulty-unlock flag, but there is no universal rule for where an unlockable hard-mode flag is stored. A particular game may keep it in a local save, a user profile, or an online service. Check that game’s support documentation before assuming that restoring a pre-attempt save will remove the unlock, preserve it, or affect achievements.

Platform support is also selective. Nintendo requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership for Save Data Cloud, and not every Switch game supports it. Steam Cloud works only when a game’s developer has configured the feature and chooses which files are included. Xbox menu names and support differ by game. Treat the game’s own support page as the authority when a platform says a feature is unavailable.
PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4
Upload a save to PlayStation Plus cloud storage
PlayStation Plus cloud storage can upload and download saved data. On a PS5, the manual path is Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings. Choose Saved Data (PS5) or Saved Data (PS4), then select Upload or Delete from Console Storage > Upload to Cloud Storage. Select the game and the save you made immediately before the hard-mode attempt.
- Make and confirm the in-game manual save.
- Quit the game normally so the console is no longer writing to the save.
- Open the settings path above and select the correct PS5 or PS4 save category.
- Upload the save, then check its status or timestamp in cloud storage.
- Only proceed when the cloud copy is at least as recent as the manual save.
Automatic synchronization can be enabled for PS5 games, and auto-upload is available for PS4 games. Automatic features are convenient, but check the individual game’s synchronization status before you begin; an old or paused sync is not a usable safety copy.

Use a full PS5 USB backup as a second copy
Sony documents a full-console backup through Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5. The backup includes saved data and requires a compatible USB storage device with enough free space. It is a console image rather than a simple export of one selected PS5 save. Do not turn off the PS5 during a backup or restore; an interruption can cause loss or corruption.

PS5 saves cannot be copied from the console to a USB drive as an individual save-file workflow. PS4 saves can be copied to USB separately. Sony’s transfer documentation explains the distinction: PS4 and PS5 game and saved-data transfer options.
Restore considerations on PlayStation
Downloading a cloud save replaces the corresponding console copy. Before doing so, preserve any newer progress you might later want by uploading it or copying the PS4 save to USB. A full PS5 USB restore has a larger scope: Sony warns that restoring the backup erases data on the console. Use that option only when you intend to roll the entire console state back and have confirmed that the backup is the correct one.
Nintendo Switch
Back up a supported game to Save Data Cloud
An active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required. First verify that the specific game supports Save Data Cloud; support is not universal. Then:
- Highlight the game icon on the HOME Menu.
- Press + or – to open the software options.
- Choose Save Data Cloud.
- Select the user profile whose save you are protecting.
- Choose Back Up Save Data and wait for the completion message.
- Compare the displayed local-save and cloud-backup timestamps. The cloud time must be at or after the manual save you just made.
Automatic backup can run after you close software or while the console sleeps when that option is enabled. For a risky difficulty attempt, still perform a manual backup and inspect the timestamps rather than assuming an automatic job ran.

Download only when you accept replacement
Downloading a backup replaces the existing console save for that game. Nintendo states that save data downloaded from the backup replaces the console’s existing save and that overwritten data cannot be recovered. If the console contains newer progress, do not download first. Decide whether that newer state should be preserved elsewhere; once replaced, it is not recoverable through the cloud command.
Steam on Windows, macOS, and Linux
Let Steam finish synchronization
Steam Cloud is synchronization, not a guaranteed sequence of historical snapshots. The game developer determines whether the game uses Steam Cloud and which files are included. Before changing difficulty:
- Save at the desired checkpoint and exit the game completely.
- Wait until Steam reports that synchronization has finished. Do not launch the game while a pending upload is shown.
- If Steam presents a cloud conflict, stop and compare the local and cloud timestamps. Choose the copy that represents the pre-attempt save; do not select an option merely to dismiss the dialog.
- After synchronization completes, make a separate dated copy of the game’s local userdata folder.
Steam warns that ignoring a sync message and selecting “play game” can create a conflict between cloud and local files, causing lost data or progress. A conflict is a decision point, not a harmless notification.
Make a dated local copy
Steam lists local cloud files in these locations:
| Operating system | Steam userdata location |
|---|---|
| Windows | C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata |
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata |
| Linux | ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata |
Close Steam or at least exit the game before copying. Copy the relevant userdata subfolder to a separate drive or another location that Steam will not overwrite, and add a date and description such as before-hard-mode-2026-10-19. Keep the copy intact; do not edit individual files unless the game’s support instructions specifically require it.

Restore a Steam save without losing the newer state
First quit the game and Steam. Preserve the current userdata folder by copying it to a second dated location. Then restore the older copy to the original location only after you have recorded which version is older and why it is the one you want. Restart Steam and watch for another cloud conflict. If Steam offers to upload the newly restored local files, choose deliberately; an automatic choice can replace the cloud state. Because games use different file layouts, a game-specific support article may be needed to identify the exact subfolder.
Xbox Series X|S
Xbox save data is uploaded to the Xbox service cloud for supported games. Current all-platform guidance from Capcom identifies that cloud upload as the Xbox Series X|S backup path. Menu labels and game behavior vary, so open the target game’s support page and confirm its save-cloud support before relying on it.
- Create the manual save at the last safe checkpoint.
- Quit the game normally and leave the console online.
- Wait for the console to finish syncing the save; do not begin hard mode while a synchronization indicator is active.
- Confirm that the game and account are the ones whose data you intend to protect.
Xbox does not provide one universal, game-independent procedure for exporting an individual save to removable media in this scenario. The practical safety check is a completed cloud synchronization plus the game’s own documentation about how a cloud save is restored.

Compare the available backup methods
| Method | Game compatibility | Subscription or accessory | Copy type | Restore scope | Timestamp or conflict signal |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Plus cloud | PS5 and PS4 saves supported by the service | PlayStation Plus cloud storage | Cloud copy of selected saved data | Corresponding console save is replaced | Upload and sync status are shown |
| PS5 USB backup | Console-wide PS5 backup | Compatible USB storage device | Independent console image | Restoring erases console data | Backup process reports progress; interruption is risky |
| Nintendo Save Data Cloud | Only games that support the feature | Active Nintendo Switch Online membership | Cloud backup for the selected user and game | Downloaded save replaces the console copy | Local and cloud timestamps are displayed |
| Steam Cloud | Only games configured by their developers | No separate subscription; Steam account and supported game | Synchronization of selected files | Local files can be replaced by a chosen cloud version | Sync status and conflict dialogs are shown |
| Xbox service cloud | Game-dependent Xbox support | Xbox account and online connection | Cloud-synchronized save | Follow the game’s documented restore behavior | Console synchronization indicator |
The key distinction is whether you have an independent second version. Steam’s dated local folder and a PS5 USB console image are separate copies. A cloud service that synchronizes one current state may still be your only available copy, so verify its time before taking the risk.

Pre-launch verification checklist
- The manual save was made after the last safe checkpoint and the game was closed normally.
- The cloud or removable-media copy has a timestamp at or after that save.
- No Steam sync error, console cloud warning, or unresolved conflict is visible.
- The game supports the cloud service you selected; platform-wide availability is not universal.
- You know the exact restore command and whether it replaces one game save or an entire console image.
- If newer progress already exists, you have preserved it separately before restoring anything.
- You have checked the game’s own documentation for where its hard-mode unlock is stored and what a rollback can change.
Recover when something goes wrong
The cloud copy is older than the manual save
Do not start hard mode yet. Reopen the game only if necessary, make the manual save again, close it normally, and wait for synchronization. On Steam, check that the client is online and that no conflict is waiting for a choice. On Switch or PlayStation, repeat the manual upload and verify the displayed time.
A cloud conflict appears
Stop at the conflict screen. Compare the dates and, where available, the device or local/cloud labels. Choose the version created immediately before the hard-mode attempt, then make a separate local copy of the other version if the platform permits. Selecting “play” or an equivalent dismiss action without comparing files can make the wrong state authoritative.
You already started hard mode and want to go back
Exit without making another save if the game allows it, then preserve the current state before restoring. Downloading a Nintendo or PlayStation cloud save, or restoring a full PS5 backup, is destructive to the current console state. On PC, copy the current Steam userdata folder before replacing it with the dated pre-attempt folder. This preserves a path back to the newer progress if the older save does not contain the expected unlock status.
The restore did not remove or preserve the unlock
That result may be correct if the game stores the unlock in a profile or online service rather than the rolled-back save. Consult the game’s support documentation instead of repeatedly restoring copies; repeated attempts can overwrite the only newer state you still have.
How to keep backups understandable
Use a simple naming scheme that identifies the game, platform, profile, and moment: GameName-platform-profile-before-hard-mode-2026-10-19. Keep independent copies in separate locations, and do not let a synchronization client monitor the folder containing your archival copy. Record whether the copy is a single save, a platform cloud state, or a whole-console image. That description tells you what will be replaced when you restore it.
After you have verified that hard mode works and you no longer need the rollback point, you can delete the archive deliberately. Until then, treat it as read-only evidence of the pre-attempt state.
Bottom line
Back up immediately before the attempt, confirm the timestamp, and keep a second copy whenever possible. Cloud services depend on both platform and game support, while restore commands can erase newer progress. The safest hard-mode experiment is one where you can identify the exact pre-attempt save, know the scope of its restore operation, and have resolved every synchronization warning before playing.
