Before installing a Windows feature update, make a separate copy of the files you cannot afford to lose, then verify that the copy is there. You can use Windows Backup to sync selected folders to OneDrive, File History to save file versions to an external drive or network location, or copy files manually to external storage. Backing up is worthwhile even when an in-place Windows 11 setup offers to keep your files and apps.
Choose what to protect before you start
Identify the files and folders you would need if the update failed or you had to reinstall Windows. Check where they are actually stored: Windows Backup can sync selected folders such as Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Videos, and Music, but that does not necessarily cover every folder on your PC. Include other important files you keep elsewhere, such as project folders or files saved outside your user folders.
Choose a destination with enough room for the data you want to protect. Microsoft does not give a universal external-drive capacity recommendation; compare the size of the files you intend to copy with the space available on the destination.
Choose a backup method
| Method | Where the copy goes | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Backup | Selected folders and settings sync to OneDrive. | The cited consumer Windows Backup flow requires a personal Microsoft account and available OneDrive storage. Microsoft’s support guide states that a free Microsoft account includes 5 GB of OneDrive storage; account rules and storage plans can change. You also need an internet connection to sync. |
| File History | An external drive or network location. | File History saves repeated versions of personal files. You must configure a destination, and the files are stored locally or on your network rather than in OneDrive. |
| Manual copy | An external hard drive or USB storage. | A straightforward option when you want to select and copy files yourself. You must identify the files to copy and check the destination afterward. |
For Microsoft’s descriptions of these options, see Backup, restore, and recovery in Windows, Back up and restore with Windows Backup, and Move your files to a new Windows PC using an external storage device.

Back up your files
Option 1: Use Windows Backup and OneDrive
- Open Windows Backup and review the folders and settings selected for backup.
- Check that the Microsoft account is personal, and confirm that your OneDrive has enough available storage for the folders you want to sync.
- Start the backup or sync. Keep the PC connected to the internet while it runs.
- Check the status displayed in Windows Backup before moving on. Do not assume the backup finished just because it was started.
Microsoft’s Ways to install Windows 11 describes the Windows 11 installation choices and recommends backing up necessary files before proceeding.
Option 2: Configure File History
- Connect an external drive or make sure the network location you intend to use is available.
- Configure File History to use that destination, following the controls available in your Windows version.
- Allow File History to save your personal files. It can retain repeated versions, which is useful if you later need an earlier copy of a file.
- Open the destination and check that the expected files or File History backup are present before installing the update.
Microsoft lists File History as a way to back up personal files to external or network storage in its Windows backup and recovery guidance.

Option 3: Copy files to external storage
- Connect an external hard drive or USB storage device.
- Copy the important folders and files you identified to the device. Make sure the destination has room for the files.
- Open the external device in File Explorer and check that the folders and files you expected to copy are present.
- Safely disconnect the device after the copy completes, and keep it available in case you need to restore files.
Microsoft’s guide to copying files with external storage describes this type of transfer. A USB drive used to boot Windows installation or recovery media is not, by itself, a backup of your personal files.
Check how Windows will be installed
Back up before you begin, then pay attention to the installation choices. Microsoft says the Windows 11 in-place Setup default is to keep personal files and apps, but other choices are available; selecting “Nothing” removes them. Starting a fresh installation by booting from Windows installation media wipes the existing drive and its files. The safest approach is to have a verified separate copy before proceeding, especially if you intend to clean-install Windows or choose an option that removes content.

System Protection restore points are for restoring system state; they are not an independent copy of your personal files. A Windows Recovery Drive also does not contain personal files.
