Back up your library while the storefront and your account still work. Download each important game through its official channel, preserve saves separately, keep two copies on different storage devices, and test restoring at least one title. A local archive protects files you legally obtained; it cannot replace a closed authentication server, a required launcher, or an online service.
What a storefront shutdown actually changes
A closure usually happens in stages rather than as an instant deletion. The operator may first stop new purchases, demos, free-content downloads, gift codes, and product-key redemption. Existing customers may still be able to download previously purchased games and downloadable content for a limited period, but that access depends on the company continuing to operate its account and licensing systems.
Nintendo’s Wii U and Nintendo 3DS example shows the distinction clearly. Nintendo states that purchases in those eShops ended on March 27, 2023, at 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time. Its support FAQ also says that, “For the foreseeable future, it will still be possible to redownload games and DLC and receive software updates on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS systems.” “For the foreseeable future” is not a permanent guarantee, so waiting until a console, account, or download service fails is risky.
- Usually stopped first: new purchases, demos, free items, in-store downloads, and code redemption.
- May continue temporarily: redownloading purchases, downloading DLC, and receiving patches.
- Always uncertain: whether a future console, client, account migration, or authentication server will recognize the old entitlement.
Keep your account active and record ownership evidence before any announced deadline. A storefront interface can disappear even while the underlying entitlement database remains available, and the reverse can also happen.

What a backup can—and cannot—preserve
Copying installed files protects the data on your drive. It does not automatically preserve every right or service needed to run that data. Classify each title before deciding how much effort to spend on it.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission notes that digital-store terms may allow access to be severed and that online support for older games can be withdrawn. Read the applicable terms for your region and platform rather than assuming that a purchase is an unconditional, perpetual license.
Build an inventory before downloading
Start with an inventory, not a pile of unnamed folders. Export or manually record the account’s purchase history while the storefront is available. Capture screenshots of ownership pages and note the exact account used; a family account, a physical-disc license, and a digital entitlement are not interchangeable.
Record these fields for every title
- Title, platform, and hardware model.
- Account email or account identifier, stored securely rather than publicly.
- Country or region, language, edition, and age rating where relevant.
- Base game, season pass, expansions, cosmetic DLC, and purchased add-ons.
- Order number, receipt date, product key, or redemption code, if supplied.
- Installed version, latest patch available, and download date.
- Save location, including whether saves are local, on a memory card, or synchronized through a platform cloud service.
- Required launcher, DRM, activation limit, controller middleware, and network requirement.
- Whether the game is offline-capable, intermittently authenticated, or online-service-dependent.
Use a spreadsheet plus a plain-text manifest in the archive. A useful manifest line is: Title | platform | region | edition | version | DLC | downloaded YYYY-MM-DD | dependency. Do not put passwords in the spreadsheet; use a password manager for credentials and two-factor recovery codes.

Download the library while access still works
Prioritize irreplaceable, delisted, large, or rarely played titles first. Install each high-value game once, allow the platform to apply the latest available update, and identify the resulting files. If the storefront offers an official transfer, export, offline-installer, or platform-backup function, use that before copying folders manually.
- Sign in and confirm ownership. Use the account shown in your inventory, check that the purchase appears, and resolve any family-sharing or region mismatch before downloading.
- Install the base game. Let the official client finish every required file and write down the installed version.
- Apply the latest available update. A patched build is generally more useful than an unpatched installation, but retain the original version when the platform’s official backup contains it.
- Capture DLC and language packs. Launch the game’s add-on or manage-content screen and verify that each purchased item is installed.
- Locate the files. Use the platform’s documented backup or export path first. If you must copy an installed directory, preserve its folder structure and permissions.
- Create a manifest. Put the title, version, region, edition, DLC list, date downloaded, and any launcher or activation requirement beside the files in a clearly named folder.
Do not assume that copying an executable is enough. Some clients store entitlement data, configuration, or encrypted packages elsewhere. An official platform archive may preserve that metadata but still depend on the original client; a portable installer may be easier to move to a future computer but may require a separate activation.
Back up save data independently
Game files and progress are different assets. A perfectly preserved installation is of little value if hundreds of hours of saves are missing. Copy local save folders where the platform permits it, and use the platform’s own cloud-save or console-transfer feature when available.
Nintendo explicitly distinguishes moving purchases and save data between consoles from its Save Data Cloud feature for Nintendo Switch Online members. Treat those as separate operations: one may move an entitlement or user profile, while the other preserves selected save files. Check which games support cloud saves, because support is not universal, and keep a second local copy when the platform allows one.

Save-data checklist
- Quit the game normally before copying saves so buffered data is written.
- Identify every user profile that has progress.
- Copy local saves to a dated folder separate from installers.
- Use the console or client’s official cloud and transfer tools.
- Record whether a save is encrypted, account-bound, or restricted to one console.
- Restore one save to a test location or spare profile when the platform supports a safe test.
Choose storage and keep two independent copies
The minimum practical design is two copies on different storage devices, with one copy disconnected or stored elsewhere. A single drive is exposed to mechanical failure, accidental deletion, theft, ransomware, and filesystem corruption.

Calculate capacity from the actual installed library, patches, DLC, saves, and growth over the next few years. Leave spare space rather than filling a drive to its limit. A USB SSD is convenient for moving a smaller collection; an external HDD is often more economical for many terabytes. A microSD card is relevant only when the console officially supports removable storage and documents a backup or transfer method; a card by itself is not a universal archive.
Verify that the archive can be restored
Copying without verification creates false confidence. After the transfer:
- Compare file counts and total sizes between the source and archive.
- Generate checksums for important installers or archive files and store the results in the manifest.
- Safely eject the drive, reconnect it, and open the manifest from the backup itself.
- Restore one representative game or installer to a test directory or spare system.
- Launch it, check that the expected patch and DLC are present, and open a copied save if the platform permits.
- Record what worked, what required an account sign-in, and what failed.
Repeat a restore test after a major operating-system, launcher, console, or hardware change. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a demonstrated recovery.

Document dependencies and likely failure points
For each title, add a short “run conditions” note. Include launcher sign-in, activation limits, DRM, region, required patches, controller software, runtime libraries, and server requirements. Mark the title as offline-capable, intermittently authenticated, or online-service-dependent.
Common failure scenarios
- The files are present but the launcher cannot see them. Reinstall or update the official client, use its library-import or “locate installed files” function, and point it to the preserved directory. Keep the original folder structure intact.
- The client asks for an activation that no longer works. Check whether the publisher supplied an offline installer, a deactivation limit reset, or an account-transfer process. A copied executable cannot bypass a license check lawfully.
- DLC is missing after restoration. Confirm the region and edition match the original purchase, then restore the add-on through the same account and platform. Record separate DLC entitlements instead of treating them as part of the base game.
- A save does not appear. Verify the user profile, save path, encryption or console binding, and whether cloud synchronization overwrote the local copy. Keep the original save untouched while testing.
- An online-only game launches but is unusable. The service, authentication endpoint, or matchmaking backend may be gone. Preserve the client and local data for historical value, but do not promise playable online functionality.
- The archive drive is unreadable. Stop writing to it, work from the second copy, and replace the failed device. Never make the only surviving copy your repair experiment.
Platform-specific planning
PC storefronts
Use the client’s own backup or export feature when offered, then preserve installers, manifests, save folders, configuration, and required redistributables. Note whether the title can run without the client or needs periodic authentication. A platform backup can retain metadata while remaining tied to a future client; an independent installer, when officially provided, is more portable but may still require activation.
Console storefronts
Follow the console maker’s documented transfer, external-storage, cloud-save, and redownload procedures. Do not assume that an external drive formatted for one console can be read by another, or that moving installed data also moves the purchase license. Record the console account, hardware generation, region, and user profile attached to each save.

Nintendo’s closure demonstrates why an early download matters: purchases and code redemption ended on March 27, 2023, while Nintendo says previously purchased games and DLC remain redownloadable and software updates remain available “for the foreseeable future.” Preserve both the purchased-content record and the console’s save data, and do not confuse a purchase transfer with the separate Save Data Cloud feature available to Nintendo Switch Online members.

Stay within legal and authorized boundaries
Back up files obtained through your own account, official downloads, or lawful physical media. Nintendo identifies its eShop and website as authorized channels and states: “Uploading or downloading pirated copies of Nintendo games is illegal.” Do not download ROMs or unauthorized copies to replace files you failed to obtain before a closure.
Copyright exceptions, contract terms, circumvention rules, and personal-backup rights vary by country. A personal archive may be permitted in one jurisdiction and restricted in another, particularly when bypassing encryption or digital-rights controls. Keep receipts and account evidence, use official export tools, and consult local law for edge cases rather than assuming that ownership of a device grants unlimited copying rights.
Maintain the archive after the storefront changes
Once the first archive is complete, maintenance is small but important. Add newly purchased games and patches promptly, update the manifest, and keep one copy offline or off-site. Review the library at least annually and after any closure announcement. Test a restore from each storage medium over time, replace drives showing errors, and migrate the archive before a device reaches the end of its expected service life.

- Purchase history exported or recorded.
- Account, region, edition, DLC, receipts, and keys documented.
- High-value games installed and updated through official channels.
- Installers or platform backup archives stored with a manifest.
- Local saves copied separately and cloud or transfer tools used where available.
- Two copies made on different devices, with one disconnected or off-site.
- Checksums or size comparisons completed.
- At least one game, installer, and save restored successfully.
- Launcher, DRM, activation, controller, patch, and server dependencies recorded.
- Online-only titles clearly marked as dependent on a continuing service.
- Archive maintained without unauthorized ROMs or copied downloads.
The safest time to make the first copy is before a closure is announced. Once downloads, authentication, or account recovery stop, no storage choice can recreate an entitlement that was never preserved.
