To back up Blu-rays to a NAS, use a computer with a compatible Blu-ray drive and software to create either a folder-based disc backup or individual movie and feature files, then save those files to the NAS. Choose the format first, check the legal rules where you live before bypassing disc protection, and make a separate backup of the NAS library. A NAS is useful storage, but it is not by itself a second copy.
Choose what you want to keep from each disc
There are two distinct approaches: retain a disc’s file structure or extract selected titles as individual files. The right choice depends on how you plan to organize and play the collection.
Full disc structure
MakeMKV’s Blu-ray Backup function copies the disc structure to a hard drive and can optionally decrypt video. It creates a folder structure, not an ISO image. This is the closer fit if retaining the disc’s files and structure matters. The available information does not establish that a NAS media player will preserve or reproduce interactive Blu-ray menus, so do not assume that a folder backup will behave like putting the disc in a player. MakeMKV’s FAQ explains the backup and title-saving distinction.
Selected-title MKV files
Opening a disc and saving selected titles as MKV files is a more direct option for a library of individual movies or bonus features. You choose which titles to keep instead of retaining the disc’s complete structure. This can make files easier to manage in a media library, but the source information does not establish playback compatibility for a particular NAS app or device; check the playback software you intend to use.

Original-quality output or a smaller transcoded copy
MakeMKV says it does not change or compress video and audio except for some audio options. That means you should not expect a fixed small file size from its output. A transcoded copy may take less space, but its size and quality depend on the settings and material; test the workflow and inspect the result before processing the whole collection.
Check the legal rules before using disc-copying software
Rules vary by country, and owning a disc does not automatically make bypassing its copy protection lawful. In the United States, the Copyright Office describes DMCA Section 1201 as generally prohibiting circumvention of technological measures that control access to protected works, including movies. The law has limited exemptions established through rulemaking; the 2024 regulation includes narrowly defined provisions for some educational accessibility activities and some preservation or replacement copying by eligible libraries, archives, or museums under specific conditions. It does not establish a general personal Blu-ray backup exemption. See the U.S. Copyright Office’s Section 1201 materials and the 2024 rule text.

The Copyright Office has begun its 2027 triennial proceeding. Its current page says exemptions, if renewed, would remain effective from October 2027 through October 2030; a proposed renewal is not an exemption already in force. Check the current rule for your situation rather than treating a future proceeding as permission today. The 2027 proceeding page provides the current status.
Canada’s Copyright Act provides a separate example: section 29.24 permits a backup reproduction only under conditions that include using a non-infringing source, making the copy solely for backup, not circumventing a technological protection measure, not giving copies away, and destroying the backup when the person stops owning or being licensed to use the source. This is a Canadian provision, not a rule that applies everywhere. Read section 29.24 of Canada’s Copyright Act. This article is practical information, not legal advice.

Gather a compatible drive, computer, and NAS
You need a Blu-ray optical drive to read physical discs, a computer that can run your chosen software, NAS storage for the resulting files, and a separate destination for a backup copy. A USB Blu-ray drive is one possible category, but compatibility depends on the exact drive model and firmware, the computer’s operating system and connection, and the software. MakeMKV’s optical-drive documentation discusses drive support and operating-system access; verify current support for your specific setup rather than relying on a general claim that any Blu-ray drive will work.
- Confirm that the drive reads the types of discs in your collection and connects to your computer.
- Check that your operating system and chosen software support the drive and its firmware.
- Confirm that the NAS has enough usable capacity and supports the storage and backup features you plan to use.
- If buying NAS disks, check the NAS maker’s supported-drive information for the exact model; compatibility is not universal.
Estimate NAS capacity from a representative sample
There is no reliable universal amount of NAS space per Blu-ray in the available evidence. Output size varies with the disc, the titles and extras you select, whether you retain the full disc structure, and whether you transcode. MakeMKV’s stated approach of generally not compressing video and audio makes it especially unwise to assume that files will be small.

- Note:The eSATA port on this product does not support the use of a computer’s SATA-to-eSATA adapter. Hot-swapping is not supported. The computer’s eSATA port must support RAID functionality to properly access multiple drive bays via the eSATA port; otherwise, only one drive bay can be accessed.

- Choose a small sample that reflects your collection: feature films, discs with substantial extras, and any full-disc structures you expect to retain.
- Process those discs using the intended output and settings, subject to the legal rules that apply to you.
- Measure the actual output folders or files and use those results to estimate the library’s storage needs.
- Allow additional usable space for the rest of the collection and future additions, then account separately for the capacity required by your backup copy.
This sample-based estimate is more useful than applying one assumed size to every disc. It is still an estimate: the sample may not capture every unusual disc or future change in your choices.

- Open the disc in your chosen software. Either use its disc-backup function for a folder structure or select the titles you want to save as MKV files.
- Set the output location to a local staging folder or directly to an accessible NAS share, if your setup supports writing there reliably.
- Wait for the operation to finish, then check that the expected folders or files exist and can be opened by your intended playback software.
- Use consistent names and folders so that movies, extras, and full-disc folders are easy to identify and back up.
If writing directly to a network share fails or is unreliable, use a local staging folder and copy the completed output to the NAS. The available sources do not establish transfer speeds or guarantee playback support, so verify both with a representative file before processing many discs.
Make a separate backup of the NAS library
A NAS is the working home for the collection, not a complete backup plan. Deletion, device failure, or a local disaster can affect the library. Synology describes the 3-2-1 approach as three copies of data, on two types of media, with one copy offsite—for example, a NAS and an external drive, plus an offsite cloud or remote-server copy. This is a named backup rule, not a measured guarantee. Synology’s explanation of the 3-2-1 approach gives the principle and examples.
- NAS only: convenient storage, but not a separate copy.
- NAS plus an external drive kept at home: provides another copy, but both may be lost in a home-level incident.
- NAS plus an offsite copy: adds protection against incidents that affect the home and its locally stored devices.
RAID can help maintain availability after certain disk failures, depending on the NAS configuration, but it does not replace a separate backup. Choose a backup destination and process that actually creates and maintains another copy of the files.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming a full-disc backup is an ISO: MakeMKV describes its Blu-ray Backup output as a folder structure, not an ISO.
- Expecting every NAS player to show disc menus: menu behavior is not established by the format distinction; verify the player and software you will use.
- Buying a drive based only on its Blu-ray label: check the exact model, firmware, operating system, connection, and software support.
- Estimating from one supposed size-per-film figure: measure representative outputs from your own discs and chosen settings.
- Treating RAID or the NAS itself as the backup: keep a separate copy, and consider an offsite copy for home-level risks.
- Assuming personal ownership settles copyright questions: circumvention rules and exceptions are jurisdiction-specific and limited.
