The game’s physical or digital format usually does not decide where your save is stored. The console platform does. Switch save data lives in system memory and requires Nintendo Switch Online cloud backup for supported games; PlayStation saves can use PlayStation Plus cloud storage, PS4-to-USB copying, or a complete PS5 system backup. Before restoring anything, compare dates carefully: a restore can overwrite newer local progress permanently.

Physical and digital games use the same save-storage rules

A cartridge, disc, or download is the game software and its license or delivery method. Save data is normally held separately in console storage or an account-linked cloud service. Installing a digital copy does not automatically create a different kind of save, and inserting a physical copy does not place the save on the cartridge or disc.

Question What normally determines the answer
Where is the save stored? The console generation, operating system, user profile, and game’s save system—not whether the game was physical or digital.
Can I copy it to removable media? The platform rules. Switch does not support local save backups to microSD or other removable media; PS4 saves can be copied to USB, while individual PS5 saves cannot.
Can another console use it? The same platform account, supported game, console generation, region, and game version may all matter.
What protects it if the console fails? A verified cloud backup or a supported local backup made before the failure.

Keep the physical card or disc and the digital license separate from the save itself. Losing, selling, or replacing the game media does not necessarily delete a save, but a replacement console may not have access to that save until you use the platform’s transfer or restore process.

Choose a backup method before you need one

Cloud storage is the most convenient way to move progress between compatible consoles, but it depends on the correct account, an active service subscription, network access, and game compatibility. Local storage gives you a tangible copy, yet support varies sharply by platform and generation.

Back up Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 saves

What is and is not stored locally

Nintendo states that “On Nintendo Switch, game save data is stored in the console’s system memory.” That applies whether the game is played from a game card or downloaded. Save data cannot be moved to or copied onto the microSD card, so a microSD card containing the game software is not a save backup.

Saves are generally associated with the individual user on the console. Select the user who actually played the game when creating or restoring a backup; choosing another user can make a valid backup appear to be missing.

Check that the game supports cloud backup

Save Data Cloud is not universal. Confirm support in the game’s eShop listing, Nintendo Store product information, or the game’s software menu before assuming a cloud copy exists. Some titles use their own transfer or server systems instead of the standard service.

Requirements

  • A Nintendo Account linked to the player’s console user.
  • An active Nintendo Switch Online membership.
  • A compatible game and an internet connection.

Make a manual backup

  1. From HOME, highlight the game’s icon.
  2. Press the + or − button.
  3. Choose Save Data Cloud.
  4. Select the player’s user.
  5. Choose Back Up Save Data and wait for the upload to finish.

You can reach the same controls through System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud. Use the manual command after a significant milestone if you want a known, recent restore point rather than waiting for an automatic upload.

Configure automatic backup and download

For compatible software, automatic backup is enabled by default when a Nintendo Switch Online membership begins. Settings can be adjusted per game and per user. Automatic download must be enabled separately on each console where you want cloud data to download. If you use more than one Switch-family console, check the setting on every device rather than assuming the preference follows the account.

Restore without destroying newer progress

Before selecting a download, compare the cloud backup date and the console save’s date or progress. Nintendo warns: “When downloading a backup from the cloud, the existing save data on the console for that game will be overwritten and cannot be recovered.” Treat the download as a replacement, not a merge. If the console copy is newer, do not download the older cloud copy.

Nintendo’s current Switch Online FAQ says you have 180 days to regain access to stored cloud backups after resubscribing when a membership has ended. Do not treat an expired membership as a permanent archive; renew and verify access within that stated period.

What Switch cannot do

Nintendo’s official wording is: “Local save data backups are not currently supported on Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch.” There is therefore no supported workflow that copies an individual Switch save to a computer, USB stick, game card, or microSD card. Use Save Data Cloud for supported games, or the platform’s account and console-transfer features when applicable.

Back up PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 saves to the cloud

PlayStation Plus storage and limits

PlayStation Plus provides cloud save storage. Sony’s current support documentation, accessed in 2026, lists 100 GB for PS5 saved data and 100 GB for PS4 saved data. PS4 online storage supports up to 1,000 PS4 save files. These are service quotas, not a guarantee that every game supports cross-generation use.

Enable automatic protection

  1. Subscribe to PlayStation Plus on the account that owns the saves.
  2. Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
  3. Open the cloud-storage or synchronization controls for the console generation.
  4. Enable automatic synchronization for PS5 saves and automatic upload for PS4 saves, then confirm the selected games and users.

PS5 games can automatically synchronize saves. PS4 saves can automatically upload, but when you move them to a PS5 you may still need to download them manually to the PS5’s console storage. Manual upload and download controls are available in the same saved-data settings area; use them when you need to force a current copy before changing consoles.

Keep account and title details consistent

Cloud data belongs to the PlayStation account that uploaded it. Sign in with that account on the replacement console and use the same user profile. A save may also depend on the game edition, region, generation, and version. A PS4 save is not automatically a valid PS5 save unless the game supports the required conversion or transfer path.

Use a USB drive for PS4 saves

Copy PS4 saves to USB

PS4 supports copying saved data to a USB storage device through its saved-data controls. Connect a USB drive, choose the PS4 saved-data copy function, select the user and games, and allow the copy to complete before disconnecting the drive. This creates a local copy of the selected PS4 saves rather than a backup of the game installation.

Import PS4 saves to PS5

Connect the drive to the PS5 and use the PS5 saved-data import controls to copy the PS4 files into console storage. Importing does not convert every save into a PS5-native save. It works for PS4 saves and for games whose PS5 version accepts the PS4 data; the game publisher’s transfer design still controls compatibility.

Why a PS5 save cannot simply be copied to USB

Sony states that individual PS5 saved data cannot be copied from the PS5 console to a USB drive. Do not promise a USB export for a single PS5 game. Use PlayStation Plus cloud storage for individual-save protection instead.

Back up an entire PS5 system

When you need local protection for a PS5, use the console’s full Backup and Restore workflow rather than looking for an individual-save export. This system backup can include console data according to the options shown by the PS5 and is intended for restoring the system as a whole.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The USB device used as extended game storage is formatted for that purpose and cannot be used for PS5 backup data. Use a separate device, or reformat the device only after moving any data you still need; formatting erases its existing contents. The backup process is broader and less granular than copying one PS4 save, so plan for the storage space and restore time required for a complete console backup.

Streaming and downloading can use different save stores

PlayStation says streamed PlayStation Plus games keep their saves with PlayStation. Downloaded games keep saves on the console and use cloud-storage copying for transfer. Do not assume that downloading a streamed title, or streaming a title you previously downloaded, will expose exactly the same local save path.

Before changing between streaming and downloading, identify which save store the game is using and verify that the desired copy has synchronized. A cloud download may be required for a downloaded version, while a streamed version follows the service’s streamed-game storage process.

Restore a save safely

  1. Stop playing on the destination console. New activity can create a newer local save while you are deciding which copy to use.
  2. Identify the account and user. Confirm that the console user is linked to the account that created the backup.
  3. Compare dates and progress. Check the cloud timestamp, USB copy date, and the local save’s latest progress. Do not choose by filename alone.
  4. Confirm the game version and generation. A PS4 save, PS5 save, streamed save, and downloaded save may follow different paths.
  5. Make a safety copy where the platform permits it. For PS4, copy the current save to USB before importing another version. On Switch, no local save copy is supported, so the overwrite warning is especially important.
  6. Perform the platform restore or download. Keep the console online and do not interrupt the transfer.
  7. Launch the game and verify several checkpoints. Confirm characters, inventory, settings, and the latest completed activity before deleting or replacing any other copy.

On Switch, downloading a cloud backup replaces the console save and the replaced data cannot be recovered. On PlayStation, downloading the wrong cloud file can likewise put an older state on the console, so the date check belongs before the download, not after it.

Move saves between consoles: what can block the transfer

  • Different account: Cloud saves are tied to the uploading account; signing in with another account does not make the files appear.
  • Unsupported title: Nintendo cloud backup requires title compatibility, and a PlayStation game may not support the needed PS4-to-PS5 conversion.
  • Generation mismatch: A PS4 save and a PS5-native save are separate types even when the game has the same name.
  • Region or edition mismatch: A save may not load in a different regional release, special edition, or disc-and-download variant.
  • Streaming versus download: The two PlayStation delivery modes can use different save stores.
  • Subscription or network issue: Nintendo Switch Online and PlayStation Plus are required for their respective cloud services, and an offline console cannot complete a cloud transfer.
  • Insufficient storage: A PS5 system backup requires a suitable USB device with enough free space; an extended-game-storage drive is not automatically a backup drive.

Troubleshoot a missing or outdated backup

Symptom Likely cause What to check
No Switch cloud option The title is unsupported, the wrong user is selected, or membership is inactive. Check the eShop, product information, or software menu; verify the linked Nintendo Account and membership.
Switch backup appears older Automatic backup was disabled, the console was offline, or the upload never completed. Review the cloud date and create a manual backup after confirming the local save is the desired version.
Switch restore removes progress Cloud download is a replacement operation. Stop and compare dates before downloading; Nintendo says overwritten local data cannot be recovered.
PS4 save is not on PS5 The file was not imported, the wrong account was used, or the game does not accept that PS4 save. Import the USB copy, sign in to the uploading account, and verify the game’s cross-generation support.
PS5 save cannot be found on USB Individual PS5 saves are not exported to USB. Use PlayStation Plus cloud storage or the full PS5 Backup and Restore process.
Cloud save is missing Automatic upload or synchronization was off, the console used another account, or the game used a different save store while streaming. Check the account, saved-data settings, cloud timestamp, and whether the game was streamed or downloaded.

A practical backup routine

  • Enable automatic cloud backup or synchronization as soon as you activate the required subscription.
  • After a major achievement, make a manual upload or backup and wait for the completion confirmation.
  • Before replacing a console, compare the newest local and cloud timestamps.
  • Keep PS4 USB copies separate from the drive used for PS5 extended game storage.
  • For PS5, schedule full system backups when you need a local fallback rather than expecting per-game USB files.
  • Record the account, user, game edition, and console generation for important saves.
  • Test one restore on a spare or replacement console when possible; a backup that has never been verified is only an assumption.

Bottom line

Back up the save according to the platform, not the game’s physical or digital format. Switch requires Nintendo Switch Online cloud backup for supported titles and offers no local save-data copy. PS4 gives you both PlayStation Plus cloud storage and USB save copying, while PS5 uses cloud storage for individual saves and USB only for a complete system backup. In every case, verify the account, title compatibility, generation, and backup date before restoring, because replacing a save with an older copy may be irreversible.
