Make a full backup before modifying your PS5: connect a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, then open Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5. Include games and apps, saved data, screenshots and video clips, and settings. Because PS5 saved data cannot be copied separately to USB, also synchronize saves to PlayStation Plus cloud storage when available, and sync trophies separately. Keep the completed USB backup disconnected and protected; restoring it later erases the data currently on the console.
Why a backup matters before homebrew
Installing unofficial software changes the risk profile of a console. A failed modification, an interrupted update, a mistaken reset or a need to return to an earlier state can leave you without local saves, settings, captures or installed software. Sony provides a console-level backup and restore function, but its support documentation does not provide a homebrew installation or compatibility procedure. The practical boundary is therefore simple: use the official backup tools to preserve recoverable data, and treat the modification itself as your own decision rather than a Sony-supported operation.
The safest preparation uses two independent copies where possible. The USB backup covers a broad set of console data while you are offline. PlayStation Plus cloud storage gives you a separate copy of saved data tied to your account. Neither method replaces the other: a cloud save is not a complete console image, and a USB backup is not an individual-save synchronisation service.
What the PS5 backup contains
The Back Up Your PS5 tool lets you choose four categories. Select all four if the drive has enough free space and you want the most complete pre-modification snapshot.
#1 Best Overall

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Category | What it protects | Why it may matter before a modification |
|---|---|---|
| Games and apps | Installed game and application data selected for the backup | Reduces the need to reinstall large downloads after recovery. |
| Saved data | Local PS5 and PS4 save data held on the console | Preserves progress that is not otherwise available from the cloud. |
| Screenshots and video clips | Captures stored in the PS5 media gallery | Protects recordings and images that are easy to overlook during a reset. |
| Settings | Console configuration included by the backup utility | Provides a starting point for preferences and system setup after restoration. |
A full backup is not a way to copy one PS5 save file to a thumb drive. Sony’s PS4-to-PS5 transfer guidance states that PS5 saved data cannot be copied from a PS5 console to USB; PS4 saved data can be copied to USB. For PS5 saves, use the full-console backup or PlayStation Plus cloud synchronisation instead.
Choose the right USB drive
Use FAT32 or exFAT
Format the USB storage drive as FAT32 or exFAT before connecting it for the backup. The drive needs enough free space for every category you select. The console may accept some devices and reject others, so a drive that works on a computer is not guaranteed to work with the PS5 backup utility.
The natural shopping description is a FAT32/exFAT USB drive for PS5 backup. Check the drive’s available capacity and its ability to be reformatted to one of those file systems. If it contains important files, copy them elsewhere first: formatting removes the existing contents.

Do not confuse backup media with extended storage
USB extended storage used for installed games is formatted for a different purpose. A drive configured as PS5 extended storage cannot also serve as the PS5 backup drive in that format. Sony’s published extended-storage guidance lists 250 GB minimum and 8 TB maximum for game-storage use; those figures describe extended storage, not the file-system requirement or a guaranteed capacity for backups. For a backup, prioritize FAT32 or exFAT compatibility and sufficient free space for the categories you select.
Make the full PS5 backup
- Prepare the drive. On a computer, format the USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT, or use a drive already formatted that way. Confirm that the drive has enough free space and that any files you need from it have been copied elsewhere.
- Connect it directly. Plug the drive into the PS5 rather than through a hub or adapter. Leave other removable storage disconnected while you begin, so you can identify the intended backup device.
- Open the backup utility. From the home screen, go to Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5.
- Choose the categories. Select games and apps, saved data, screenshots and video clips, and settings. If capacity is limited, saved data and irreplaceable captures deserve priority; you can make a second backup after freeing space, but do not assume a partial backup contains categories you did not select.
- Start the backup. Select Back Up. The PS5 restarts and performs the operation. Do not unplug the drive or switch off the console while the process is running.
- Wait for completion. Continue only after the console shows the Backup complete confirmation and completes the subsequent restart. A drive that was connected during an apparent progress screen is not proof that the archive finished.
- Record what you made. Note the date, the console used, the categories selected and the drive’s identity. A simple label such as “PS5 backup—19 October 2026—saves, settings, captures” prevents confusion if you create more than one archive.
After the confirmation, disconnect the drive when the console is no longer using it and store it somewhere dry and protected. Keep it separate from the PS5 while you test or install unofficial software; a backup left connected can be lost along with the console if something goes wrong.
Sync trophies and cloud saves separately
Synchronize trophies
Trophies are handled separately from the backup categories. Synchronize them with PlayStation Network before any reset or restore. Open the trophies area while signed in and allow the synchronization to finish; do not treat a local trophy display as proof that the network copy is current.

Use PlayStation Plus cloud storage as a second save copy
When PlayStation Plus is available, enable or manually run cloud synchronization for both PS5 and PS4 saves. Sony’s current support documentation, accessed in 2026, lists 100 GB of PS5 saved-data storage and 100 GB of PS4 saved-data storage. PS5 saves synchronize through the PS5 cloud-save controls; PS4 saves can be manually uploaded or downloaded as well.

Automatic PS5 synchronization requires the console to be connected to the internet, in rest mode, with automatic sync enabled. Before modifying the system, open the cloud-save controls and check that the most recent upload time is newer than your last important play session. If the console has been offline, perform a manual sync while online instead of assuming the cloud copy is current.

| Consideration | USB PS5 backup | PlayStation Plus cloud storage |
|---|---|---|
| Data scope | Can include games and apps, saved data, screenshots and video clips, and settings selected in the backup utility. | Saved data synchronisation; it is not a complete console image. |
| Connection requirement | Created and used locally with a compatible FAT32 or exFAT drive; internet is not required for the file transfer. | Requires an internet connection for upload and download; automatic PS5 sync also needs rest mode and automatic sync enabled. |
| Overwrite risk | Restoring the archive erases data currently saved on the PS5. | Downloading or synchronizing a save can replace the local version, so check timestamps before choosing a copy. |
| Account dependence | Backups are linked to the PlayStation account. If the console was never signed in to PlayStation services, Sony limits restoration to that same console; restoring to another console requires the same account. | Cloud saves are associated with the PlayStation account and require access to that account. |
| Capacity | Limited by the free space on the selected drive and the categories chosen. | 100 GB for PS5 saved data and 100 GB for PS4 saved data according to Sony’s current 2026 support documentation. |
| Independent reuse | The drive can be stored as an offline archive, but it must remain in a compatible backup format rather than PS5 extended-storage format. | The copy remains online and can be accessed after signing in on a compatible console. |
Verify the backup before installing anything
The PS5 reports completion, but good preparation also confirms that you know exactly what the archive is for. Use this checklist before proceeding with a modification:
- Write down the completion date and the categories selected.
- Confirm that your most important games show recent local saves before the backup begins.
- Check the cloud-save timestamp for each important PS5 title, if you use PlayStation Plus.
- Synchronize trophies while signed in to PlayStation Network.
- Keep the USB drive disconnected and protected after the backup.
- Do not overwrite the archive with another console’s files or repurpose it as extended storage.
- If you have multiple accounts on the PS5, note which account owns the saves and which account will be used if a restore is needed.
These checks do not create another backup; they make the existing one identifiable and reduce the chance of restoring the wrong archive or an older cloud version.

Restoration is a whole-console operation, not a harmless file import. Sony states that restoring data erases all data saved on the console. Any saves, captures, settings or other content created after the archive date will be removed from the PS5 when the restoration runs. If you created new data during homebrew testing, preserve it separately before selecting restore.

System-software version requirement
Sony states that the current system-software version on the PS5 must be the same as, or newer than, the version on the console when the backup was made. A restore can therefore fail or be unavailable when you try to use an archive made on a newer system with a PS5 running older system software. Record the software context with the backup and bring the console to an eligible version before attempting recovery.
Account and console limits
Backups are linked to the PlayStation account. If the PS5 was never signed in to PlayStation services, Sony says restoration is limited to the same physical console. Restoring to another PS5 requires the same account used with the backup. This makes account access part of the recovery plan: keep the sign-in details available and do not assume that a USB archive alone removes account requirements.
Console Sharing and Offline Play
After a restore, Console Sharing and Offline Play is disabled. Re-enable it afterward if you need other users on that PS5 to access the console’s games or to play while offline. Treat this as a post-restore setup task, not evidence that the backup failed.
Restore a backup when recovery is necessary
- Preserve any newer saves, captures or settings that you still need. A restore will remove the current console data.
- Connect the USB drive containing the intended archive directly to the PS5.
- Open Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore.
- Choose the restore option and select the backup by its recorded date and contents.
- Read the on-screen warning, verify that the system-software requirement is satisfied, and confirm only when you accept the erase-and-replace operation.
- Leave the console and drive connected until the process and restart finish.
- Sign in with the account associated with the archive, re-enable Console Sharing and Offline Play if required, then check saved data, captures, settings and installed software before reconnecting other storage.
If you are returning from a failed modification, perform the restore before experimenting with additional changes. Establish that the console boots, the expected account is available and the important saves open correctly; only then rebuild your preferred setup.
Troubleshoot common backup and restore problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| The PS5 does not offer the drive for backup. | The drive uses an unsupported file system, is connected through an unreliable hub, or is not compatible with the console. | Back up the drive’s existing files elsewhere, format it as FAT32 or exFAT, connect it directly, and try again with another compatible device if necessary. |
| There is not enough space to select every category. | Games, clips and applications consume more space than the drive has free. | Use a larger compatible drive or make a deliberate category selection. Keep saved data and irreplaceable captures in the backup when capacity forces a choice. |
| The drive is recognized only as extended storage. | It is formatted for installed games rather than PS5 backup. | Move any games you need to keep, reformat the drive as FAT32 or exFAT, and recreate the backup. Reformatting erases its contents. |
| The backup never shows completion. | The process was interrupted, the drive was removed, or the console encountered a device error. | Reconnect the drive, restart the backup and wait for the explicit completion message and restart before disconnecting it. |
| A restore option is unavailable or rejected. | The console’s system software is older than the version used when the archive was made, or the archive belongs to another account or console. | Meet the same-or-newer software requirement and sign in to the associated account. An archive created without PlayStation Network sign-in is restricted to its original console. |
| A recent PS5 save is missing after a problem. | It was created after the USB archive and was not synchronized to the cloud. | Check PlayStation Plus cloud storage for a newer copy. If none exists, the older USB archive cannot contain progress made after its completion. |
| Games or settings seem absent after recovery. | The category was not selected, or the restoration is still finishing its restart and account setup. | Review the recorded category list, allow the restart to finish, sign in to the correct account and re-enable Console Sharing and Offline Play if needed. |
A practical pre-homebrew checklist
- Prepare a USB drive formatted FAT32 or exFAT with enough free space.
- Confirm it is not being used as PS5 extended storage, or reformat it after moving its contents.
- Run Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5.
- Select games and apps, saved data, screenshots and video clips, and settings when space permits.
- Wait for the Backup complete message and the following restart.
- Record the date, categories and account associated with the archive.
- Synchronize trophies separately.
- Upload or synchronize PS5 and PS4 saves to PlayStation Plus cloud storage when available, and verify the timestamps.
- Disconnect and protect the USB drive.
- Keep the account credentials and the system-software requirement with your recovery notes.
This preparation gives you a recoverable baseline without implying that unofficial software is supported or guaranteed. The backup is most valuable when it is complete, clearly identified, stored separately and paired with a current cloud copy of the saves you cannot afford to lose.
