Back up your PS5 before installing an update, using Safe Mode, or especially reinstalling system software. The documented physical method is a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive: open Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5, choose what to copy, and wait for the on-screen “Backup complete” message before disconnecting the drive. PlayStation Plus cloud synchronization can provide a second copy of saved data.

What to do before you change PS5 system software

Use a USB storage device formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, connect it to the console, and create a backup through the PS5’s Back Up and Restore menu. Keep the drive connected until the console confirms completion and returns you to the home screen. If you subscribe to PlayStation Plus, synchronize saved data to cloud storage as an additional recovery copy.

This precaution matters most when the planned operation is a system-software reinstallation. Sony distinguishes an ordinary update from the Safe Mode command Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software). Sony states: “Reinstalling the system software on your PS5 console will delete all of the data on your PS5 console.” A routine update is not the same operation, but a verified backup removes the risk of relying on that distinction during a repair or recovery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before you begin, identify exactly which operation you intend to perform. A normal online update, a manual update from a USB file, and a full reinstallation use different menus and have different consequences. Read the option name on screen rather than assuming every Safe Mode choice is harmless. Sony’s Safe Mode guidance warns that some options cause data loss and recommends making a USB or cloud copy first.

What a PS5 USB backup contains

A full console backup can copy several categories at once. During the backup process, the PS5 lets you select the categories you want to include.

  • Games and apps: installed game and application data included in the console backup.
  • Saved data: PS5 and PS4 game saves stored on the console.
  • Screenshots and video clips: captured media saved on the PS5.
  • Settings: console settings included by the backup selection.

Selecting only saved data creates a smaller, focused archive. Selecting every available category creates a broader console recovery image, but it also requires more free space and may take longer. If your priority is continuing a game, saved data is the essential category; include the other categories when you want the console restored more completely after a reset.

Trophies are excluded. Synchronize trophies separately before a major system change so your trophy progress is associated with your PlayStation account rather than depending on the USB backup. A restore cannot replace that account synchronization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sony’s support wording is explicit: “You can use a USB storage device to back up saved data from your PlayStation®5 console.” The backup is a console archive, not merely a folder you can browse and copy like ordinary files; use the PS5’s Back Up and Restore commands to create and recover it.

Choose the correct USB drive and format

The drive must be formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. If the drive uses another file system, format it with your computer’s disk-formatting utility before connecting it to the PS5. Formatting erases the existing contents, so copy anything you need from the drive first. A drive can be used for this purpose without a PlayStation Plus membership.

Do not confuse a backup drive with a USB extended-storage drive used for installed games. Sony uses a different format for extended storage, and that device cannot be used for PS5 backup data. If a drive has been configured as the console’s game extended storage, move or copy any needed game data elsewhere, then use a separately formatted FAT32 or exFAT device for the backup. A drive suitable for installing games is therefore not automatically suitable for a console backup.

  • Use a drive the PS5 recognizes as FAT32 or exFAT.
  • Make sure the drive has enough free space for the categories you select, particularly if you include games, apps, clips, and screenshots.
  • Connect the drive directly to the console while making and restoring the backup.
  • Do not unplug the drive while the backup or restore is running.
  • Keep the drive available until you have seen the completion message; starting the process is not proof that an archive was successfully written.

Sony’s documentation does not publish a universal backup-duration figure or a required capacity for every selection. The time and space required therefore depend on the amount of content you choose to copy. A backup containing only saves will generally involve less content than one containing installed games, applications, captures, and settings, but Sony does not provide a single guaranteed time or size for either choice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are buying a drive specifically for this job, look for a FAT32/exFAT-compatible USB storage device rather than selecting one already assigned as PS5 extended game storage. No particular brand, price, capacity, or retailer is required by Sony’s documented procedure; the decisive requirements are the file system, available space, and a stable connection.

How to make a USB backup on PS5

  1. Prepare the drive. Format a USB storage device as FAT32 or exFAT and confirm that any important files already on it have been moved elsewhere. Formatting is destructive to the drive’s existing contents.
  2. Connect the drive. Plug the prepared USB device into the PS5.
  3. Open the backup menu. From the home screen, go to Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore.
  4. Start a console backup. Select Back Up Your PS5. The console displays the available data categories.
  5. Choose the content. Select the categories you want to copy. Include saved data, and add games and apps, screenshots and video clips, or settings if you want a broader recovery image.
  6. Confirm the operation. Select Next, then Back Up. The PS5 restarts and begins the backup.
  7. Wait for confirmation. Leave the drive connected until the screen says “Backup complete. Your PS5 console will restart”. Select OK and allow the console to return to the home screen before removing the drive.

The console restart is part of the documented process, not a signal to remove the drive immediately. The confirmation screen is the point at which you can treat the archive as complete. Removing the drive earlier leaves the operation unfinished and may leave you without a usable recovery copy.

After the PS5 returns to the home screen, label or store the drive so it is not accidentally reformatted for another purpose. If the drive contains the only copy of important captures or saves, keep it disconnected from the console until it is needed for restoration. The PS5 backup archive should be handled through Restore Your PS5, not by opening it on a computer and moving individual files.

Should you also use PlayStation Plus cloud storage?

Cloud storage requires a PlayStation Plus membership and an internet connection. It concentrates on saved data rather than the broader set of games, apps, clips, screenshots, and settings that a USB console backup can contain. For that reason, cloud synchronization works well as a second copy even when you have already made a USB backup. It is also the available recovery path if the console has already been reset and no USB archive was created.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To enable automatic synchronization, keep the PS5 connected to the internet in rest mode. Then open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings and choose the saved-data type you need:

  • For PS5 games, select Saved Data (PS5) > Sync Saved Data > Auto-Sync Saved Data.
  • For PS4 games, select Saved Data (PS4) > Auto-Upload.

Sony says PS5 console and cloud data synchronize to the newest data. PS4 saves upload automatically, but after moving to a PS5 you must download those saves manually to PS5 storage. Do not assume that seeing a PS4 save in cloud storage means it has already been placed on the console after the change; use the download command when you need it locally.

Sony’s 2026 support documentation lists capacity of 100 GB for PS5 saved data and 100 GB for PS4 saved data. That capacity applies to the cloud-storage categories Sony specifies, not to games, applications, screenshots, clips, or settings. Cloud storage also depends on the account and membership being available, so a USB archive remains useful even for a subscriber.

Sony describes the automatic behavior this way: “You can automatically sync your saved data with cloud storage when you close a game or put your console in rest mode.” Before changing software, close games normally, allow the console to connect in rest mode, and confirm that the relevant automatic-sync or upload setting is enabled rather than relying on an earlier session.

USB and cloud backup compared

Consideration USB console backup PlayStation Plus cloud storage
Availability Works without a PlayStation Plus membership when you have a suitable USB drive. Requires a PlayStation Plus membership.
Scope Can include games and apps, saved data, screenshots and video clips, and settings, according to the categories selected. Focuses on saved data.
Connectivity Uses the connected FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB device; an internet connection is not required for the physical copy. Requires internet access and the appropriate automatic-sync or upload setting.
Recovery condition Restoring requires the current system-software version to be the same as or newer than the version installed when the backup was made. PS5 data synchronizes to the newest data; PS4 saves may need a manual download to PS5 storage after the change.

USB and cloud are complementary rather than interchangeable. USB is the wider console archive and does not depend on a subscription, while cloud storage is convenient for saves and supplies a separate copy if the physical drive is unavailable. A reader who wants only game progress may use cloud storage; a reader preparing for a reinstall should prefer the USB console backup and add cloud synchronization when available.

Updating PS5 system software versus reinstalling it

Routine online update

For the normal update path, open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software. Make the USB or cloud backup before starting, particularly if the update is being attempted as part of troubleshooting. This menu is distinct from the Safe Mode reinstallation command.

Manual update from USB

Sony’s manual-update procedure uses a different file layout from a backup. Format the update drive as FAT32 or exFAT, create the folders PS5/UPDATE, and save the official update file as PS5UPDATE.PUP. Start the console in Safe Mode and choose Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device. Keep this update drive separate from the backup archive when practical, because the update procedure and the backup procedure expect different contents.

The update file and the backup archive are not the same kind of data. Do not rename a backup or place it in the PS5/UPDATE path expecting the console to treat it as installation media. Conversely, do not treat the update file as a backup of saved data. Make the backup first, then perform the update procedure that matches the option Sony documents for your situation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

System-software reinstallation

Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) is a destructive Safe Mode option. Sony warns that reinstalling deletes all data on the console. Do not select it until the USB backup has reached its completion message and, when possible, cloud synchronization has finished. Sony’s Safe Mode guidance also warns that some options result in data loss and recommends backing up to USB or cloud storage first.

When troubleshooting presents several Safe Mode choices, read whether the command says Update System Software or Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software). The latter is the operation for which Sony gives the explicit all-data deletion warning. If you are not certain which command a repair guide intends, stop and make the backup before proceeding.

Pre-change checklist

  • Confirm that the USB device is FAT32 or exFAT, not PS5 game extended storage.
  • Move anything important off the drive before formatting it.
  • Include saved data in the selected backup categories.
  • Decide whether you also need games and apps, screenshots and clips, and settings.
  • Synchronize trophies separately; they are not part of the USB backup.
  • If you have PlayStation Plus, complete cloud sync or confirm that automatic sync and upload are enabled.
  • Leave the console connected to the internet and, for automatic cloud behavior, allow it to enter rest mode.
  • Record whether you are performing a normal update, a manual update, or a reinstall. Only the reinstall command is explicitly described by Sony as deleting all console data.
  • Wait for the exact “Backup complete” confirmation before disconnecting the drive.
  • Keep the backup drive available until the system change has succeeded and you know how you will restore if necessary.

How to restore the backup after a reinstall or system change

  1. Meet the version requirement. Install or update the PS5 system software so that its version is the same as or newer than the version installed when the backup was created.
  2. Connect the backup drive. Use the USB drive containing the PS5 archive, not a drive formatted as PS5 game extended storage or a drive prepared only with the update file.
  3. Open the restore menu. Go to Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore.
  4. Select the archive. Choose Restore Your PS5 and select the backup archive shown by the console.
  5. Confirm and wait. Follow the on-screen confirmation prompts and leave the drive connected until the restore finishes. Do not interrupt power or remove the drive during the operation.

The system-version prerequisite is strict: Sony requires the installed version to be the same as or newer than the one present when the backup was made. If the console is on an older version, update it before attempting restoration. A backup made on a newer system version is not a reason to downgrade the console first.

Restoring disables Console Sharing and Offline Play. Re-enable that setting afterward if you rely on it for access to subscriptions and content on the console. Check the setting after the restore rather than assuming it retained its prior state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restoration is intended to be initiated from the PS5’s Back Up and Restore menu. The archive is not a collection of individually importable save files, so browsing the USB drive on a computer does not provide an alternative restore workflow. If the console does not list the archive, check the drive format, connection, and system-version requirement before trying again.

What to check when a backup is not available

The backup menu does not recognize the drive

Check the file system first. A drive formatted for PS5 game extended storage is not valid backup media, and a file system other than FAT32 or exFAT does not meet Sony’s documented requirement. Move any needed files off the drive, reformat it as FAT32 or exFAT, reconnect it directly to the PS5, and return to Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore.

If the drive was used for an update, verify that you are connecting the device intended for backup and that the backup archive has actually been completed. The update folder and PS5UPDATE.PUP file do not constitute a console backup.

You cannot restore an archive

Verify the system-software version. The console must be running the same or a newer version than the one used when the backup was created. If it is older, perform the required update first, then retry Restore Your PS5. Also verify that the connected device is the FAT32/exFAT backup drive and that the console is using the Back Up and Restore menu.

You expected trophies to return

Trophies are not included in the USB backup. Synchronize them separately before the system change; a restore cannot substitute for that account synchronization. This is why trophy syncing belongs on the pre-change checklist even when every available USB category is selected.

PS4 saves are missing after the change

Cloud handling differs for PS4 saves. Sony says PS4 saves upload automatically when configured, but they must be downloaded manually to PS5 storage after the change. Check Saved Data (PS4) in Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings, then download the required saves. Do not infer that the PS5 automatic-sync behavior for PS5 games performs the same local download for PS4 saves.

The console was reset before a backup was made

If Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) was completed without a USB or cloud copy, the deleted console data cannot be recovered through that backup process. Check whether a PlayStation Plus cloud copy exists and whether trophies were synchronized to the account. If neither copy exists, there is no documented PS5 backup archive to restore.

Frequently asked questions

Will a regular PS5 system update delete my saves?

A routine update and Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) are different operations. Sony explicitly says that reinstalling deletes all console data. Because troubleshooting can lead to a Safe Mode choice, make and verify a backup before either operation rather than relying on the update type alone.

Key distinctions to remember

  • FAT32 or exFAT USB media is the documented physical-backup path.
  • Game extended storage is different and cannot hold the PS5 backup archive.
  • Trophies are excluded; synchronize them separately.
  • Cloud storage is a second copy, but it requires PlayStation Plus, internet connectivity, and correct rest-mode settings.
  • PS4 cloud saves may need a manual download after the system change.
  • Reinstallation deletes console data; treat it as destructive until your backup is verified.
  • Restoration requires the same or newer system-software version than the one installed when the backup was created.
  • Restore through the PS5 menu; the archive is not intended to be copied back as ordinary files.

Yes. Use a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB storage device. PlayStation Plus is required for cloud storage, not for the USB backup.

Can I use PS5 extended storage as backup media?

No. Extended storage for installed games uses a different format and cannot be used for PS5 backup data.

Are trophies included in the USB backup?

No. Synchronize trophies separately with your PlayStation account before the system change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What version is required to restore a backup?

The PS5 must be running the same or a newer system-software version than the version installed when the backup was created.

What happens to PS4 cloud saves after the change?

PS4 saves can upload automatically when configured, but they must be downloaded manually to PS5 storage afterward.

The Bottom Line

Before changing PS5 system software, create a USB console backup on FAT32 or exFAT media, include saved data, and wait for the exact “Backup complete” confirmation. Synchronize trophies separately and use PlayStation Plus cloud storage as a second copy when available. Treat Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) as destructive, and restore only after the console meets Sony’s same-or-newer system-version requirement.
