Back up a PS4 save to a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive, and back up a PS5 save to PlayStation Plus cloud storage or a full PS5 console backup. A PS4 can upload individual saves to the cloud or include them in a USB backup. A PS5 can sync individual PS5 and PS4 saves with cloud storage, but Sony does not allow an individual PS5 save to be copied directly to USB; use the console’s full Back Up and Restore function for a local archive.
Do this before the publisher’s shutdown date, while you can still sign in, sync trophies, download updates and reach the game’s online services. A backup preserves data stored on your console. It cannot recreate an online account, matchmaking service, rankings, user-generated-content server or other state that exists only on the publisher’s servers.
Choose the right backup for your console
Your safest plan is to keep two independent copies when the game supports them: one in PlayStation Plus cloud storage and one on a USB drive or in a full-console archive. Cloud storage is convenient and can synchronize automatically; a local archive does not depend on an active subscription or a cloud account. Both still depend on the game storing its progress locally.

First determine what the game can actually preserve
A console backup only contains files the game writes to local saved data. Before spending time on a backup, check the publisher’s shutdown notice and identify which features remain usable offline.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Progress normally stored on the console
- Campaign or career progress that the game saves to the PS4 or PS5.
- Locally stored settings, profiles and other save-file data included in the platform backup.
- For Gran Turismo Sport, Polyphony Digital states that “all gameplay progression will continue to be saved through Saved Data on the PlayStation®4 system” after its online services end.
Progress that may disappear with the service
- Matchmaking records, online rankings and server-side leaderboards.
- Online inventories, account entitlements, live events and network-only unlocks.
- User-generated creations hosted on a publisher’s server.
- Virtual currency. PlayStation Network terms state: “VC will not be usable after a game’s online servers are shutdown.”
If the notice does not clearly say where a feature is stored, assume that server-dependent information cannot be restored from a console save. Capture screenshots or video of inventories, rankings and creations that the game does not let you export.
Back up PS4 saves to a USB drive
Prepare the drive
- Use a USB flash drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT.
- Make sure it has at least twice the free space required by the PS4 backup file. Sony specifies this extra working space for the backup process.
- Copy anything important off the drive first. A later format as extended storage can erase existing contents.
- Use a separate drive from one used for PS4 or PS5 extended game storage when possible, and label the backup with the PSN account, console, game and date.
Create the PS4 backup
- Connect the PS4 to the internet and sign in to the PSN account that owns the saves.
- From the function screen, open Trophies, press OPTIONS, and choose Sync Trophies. Trophies are account records rather than save files, so synchronize them while the service is available.
- Insert the FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive.
- Open Settings > System > Back Up and Restore > Back Up.
- Select the data to include and make sure saved data is selected. If you are creating a complete safety copy, include the other categories the console offers.
- Name the backup so the game, account and date are obvious, then start the process.
- Wait for the completion message before removing the drive. Eject it safely and store it away from the console.
The result is a PS4 backup archive rather than a file you can browse and edit on a computer. To use it, connect the drive to a compatible PS4 and choose the restore command in the same Back Up and Restore area. Restoring a full backup can replace data on the destination console, so do not use it casually on a console containing newer saves.
Upload an individual PS4 save to PlayStation Plus
Cloud storage gives you a second copy and is useful when you want to restore one game without restoring the entire console.
- Highlight the game in the PS4 Library.
- Press OPTIONS.
- Choose Upload/Download Saved Data.
- Select the local save and upload it to PlayStation Plus online storage.
- After the upload, check the displayed timestamp. When you need the save again, return to the same menu and choose the download option.
Upload only after the game has finished saving. If you have played on more than one PS4, verify which console has the newest timestamp before replacing a cloud copy.

Back up PS5 saves with cloud storage
PlayStation Plus cloud storage supports up to 100 GB of PS5 saved data and 100 GB of PS4 saved data, according to Sony’s current support documentation accessed in 2026. PS5 and PS4 saves use separate selections in the Saved Data menus.
Upload a PS5 or PS4 save manually
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Choose Saved Data (PS5) for a native PS5 game or Saved Data (PS4) for a PS4 game running on the PS5.
- Open the cloud upload/download controls.
- Select the console save, upload it, and verify the resulting time and date.
Enable automatic synchronization
- In Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings, open the saved-data section for PS5 games.
- Enable Auto-Sync Saved Data.
- Open the PS4 saved-data section and enable Auto-Upload for PS4 games.
- Leave the PS5 connected to the internet in Rest Mode so synchronization can run.
Automatic synchronization is not a substitute for checking the timestamp. Open the cloud list before shutdown day and confirm that the target game has a recent copy. If practical, download one save to confirm that the account and game are recognized correctly; do not overwrite a newer local save without checking its date.
Create a local archive of PS5 saved data
Sony explicitly prevents copying an individual PS5 save from the console to a USB drive. To keep a local PS5 copy, use the full-console backup workflow before the service closes.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Connect a USB drive with enough free capacity for the console backup. Do not use a drive containing files you have not copied elsewhere.
- On the PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore.
- Choose the option to back up the PS5, select the data categories offered by the console, and start the backup.
- Keep the console powered and connected until it reports completion.
- Label and store the drive with the PSN account, console and backup date. Keep it separate from the PS5 and, for irreplaceable progress, maintain a second copy.
Use the same Back Up and Restore area when you need to restore. A full-console restore is broader than a single-game download and can replace data on the destination PS5; preserve any newer data first.

Transfer saves between PS4 and PS5
Move compatible data between two consoles
Sony’s PS4-to-PS5 and PS5-to-PS5 transfer tools can move compatible saved data when both consoles use the same account and network. Keep both consoles on, signed in to that account and updated, then follow the transfer prompts shown in Settings. The transfer does not convert a server-side account into a local save, and a game may still require its own migration process.
Copy a PS4 save from USB to PS5
A PS4 save stored in a PS4 backup can be copied from USB to a PS5 using the PS5’s saved-data management controls. This applies to PS4 saved data; it does not bypass the restriction on exporting an individual native PS5 save.
Confirm the game version
Some titles have separate PS4 and PS5 versions with different save formats. Before deleting the old installation, launch the target version and verify that the transferred progress appears. Keep the original PS4 backup until you have tested the game on the PS5.
What different shutdowns mean in practice
Shutdown behavior is title-specific. Sony’s decommissioned-server examples show why a backup alone is not enough:

| Example | After online services end | What a local save can still do |
|---|---|---|
| inFAMOUS 2 | User-generated-content access ends. | The offline campaign remains playable. |
| GUNS UP! | The game becomes unplayable because it requires online access. | A backed-up file cannot replace the required service. |
| Gran Turismo Sport | Community, Open Lobby, Sport Mode, online features and online items are removed. | Offline portions remain, and gameplay progression continues through PS4 Saved Data, according to Polyphony Digital’s end-of-service notice. |
Read the exact notice for your game for the effective date, time zone, remaining offline modes, delisting plans and any required offline patch. Download updates while they are available and keep the game installed if you intend to play its offline content.
Use the right kind of USB storage
A small FAT32 or exFAT flash drive is the practical purchase for a PS4 save backup. Select a reputable drive with at least twice the free capacity required by the backup file.
Do not confuse that archive drive with USB extended storage for installed games. Sony lists 250 GB minimum and 8 TB maximum for compatible PS5/PS4 game-storage drives. PS5 games stored there must be copied back to console storage before they can be played. Extended storage is therefore not a replacement for a PS4 save-backup drive or a PS5 full-console archive.
Recommended Free Tools
Verify the backup before shutdown day
- Check the backup date and the PSN account shown on the console.
- For PS4 USB backups, confirm that the console completed the process and that the drive remains readable when reconnected.
- For cloud copies, open the upload/download screen and verify a recent timestamp for every important game.
- For PS5 full backups, keep the completion record and label the physical drive.
- Where the game allows it, restore or download a test copy on spare storage or a second console. Do not overwrite your only current save during the test.
- Record which items are local and which are server-side. Photograph or capture video of online-only inventories, ranks and creations that cannot be exported.
Troubleshoot common failures
The PS4 rejects the USB drive
Back up the drive’s existing contents, then format it as FAT32 or exFAT and reconnect it. Confirm that it has more than twice the free space required by the backup. A drive formatted as PS4/PS5 extended storage may not be available for the backup workflow until it is reformatted.

The cloud copy has an old timestamp
Start a manual upload from the saved-data menu, wait for completion, and check the timestamp again. Make sure you are signed in to the same PSN account used for the game and that the console is online. Do not assume that Rest Mode synchronization ran if the console was offline or powered down.
The save is missing after transfer
Check whether you launched the PS4 or PS5 edition, whether both consoles used the same account, and whether the title supports cross-generation save migration. Keep the original console and USB archive until the correct version loads the expected progress.
The game will not start after shutdown
That may be an intentional online requirement rather than a damaged save. A local backup cannot restore matchmaking, authentication, server-hosted content or a game that requires its servers to launch.
Quick Recap
Final pre-shutdown checklist
- Find the publisher’s exact shutdown date and time zone.
- Confirm whether an offline mode remains and whether an offline patch or save migration is offered.
- Sign in to the correct PSN account.
- Sync trophies while the service is available.
- Create the PS4 USB backup or PS5 full-console backup.
- Upload important saves to PlayStation Plus and verify each timestamp.
- Download required patches and keep the game installed before delisting or service removal.
- Document server-side progress with screenshots or video.
- Store the USB archive away from the console and keep a second copy for irreplaceable saves.
