Use a different backup method for each console generation: a PS4 can make a full USB backup that includes saves, games, clips, and settings; a PS5 cannot export PS5 saved data to USB, so PlayStation Plus cloud storage, console-to-console transfer, or a rebuilt download library are the safeguards. Downloaded purchases remain tied to your account and can be downloaded again, while USB extended storage or an M.2 SSD can preserve large game installations without replacing a save backup.

Choose the right protection for your console

Your saves and your installed game files are separate things. A save contains progress, characters, settings, and other game-state data. An installed title is the much larger application data used to launch the game. Protecting one does not automatically protect the other.

Method Protects saves Keeps downloaded game files locally PlayStation Plus required Main limitation
PS4 full USB backup Yes, plus settings and other selected content Yes, when games and apps are included No Restoring erases data on the destination PS4; the drive must be FAT32 or exFAT and have at least twice the backup size available
PS4/PS5 console transfer Yes, on supported transfer paths Transfers supported game data No Both consoles need the same account, current system software, and an uninterrupted network connection
PlayStation Plus cloud storage Yes No; titles are downloaded again or restored from storage Yes Storage is limited to 100 GB for PS5 saves and 100 GB for PS4 saves, with up to 1,000 PS4 saved-data files
USB extended storage No Yes, for compatible PS4 and PS5 games No PS5 games must be copied to the internal SSD before they can be played
PS5-compatible M.2 SSD No Yes, for compatible games installed on the expansion No It is internal game expansion, not a portable save backup

Back up a PS4 to a USB drive

Sony’s PS4 backup function creates a full-console image. It can include installed games and applications, saved data, screenshots, video clips, and console settings. This is the most complete local option when you are replacing a PS4, resetting it, or protecting a large library without relying on an internet connection.

Prepare the drive

  • Use a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. A drive formatted with another file system will not meet the PS4 backup requirement.
  • Ensure the drive has at least twice the capacity of the backup file. The extra space is a requirement, not merely a recommendation.
  • Back up any unrelated files on the drive first, because formatting or selecting the drive for another storage purpose can erase its contents.

Sync trophies before copying data

On the PS4 home screen, open Trophies, press the OPTIONS button, and choose Sync Trophies. Trophy progress is associated with your PlayStation account and should be synchronized before you disconnect or retire the console.

Seagate 2TB Portable Hard Drive | USB 3.0 (STGX2000400) | Everyday HDD storage. Plug-and-play backup. Windows & macOS. Adobe CC trial included. 1-Year Warranty
  • Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Create the PS4 backup

  1. Connect the prepared USB drive directly to the PS4.
  2. Open Settings > System > Back Up and Restore.
  3. Choose Back Up.
  4. Select the content categories to include. Keep Saved Data selected. Add Applications if you want installed games and apps in the local image, and include captures and settings when those matter to you.
  5. Confirm the backup and leave the console powered until the process reports completion. Large libraries can take substantial time.

A backup containing only saved data is smaller and faster. A backup that includes applications is useful when you want to restore a working PS4 with fewer downloads, but it also requires more drive space.

Restore safely

On the destination PS4, use Settings > System > Back Up and Restore > Restore PS4, then select the backup on the USB drive. Sony warns that restoring a PS4 backup erases data already stored on the destination console. Copy anything you still need from that console before confirming the restore. Do not interrupt power or remove the drive while restoration is running.

Move a PS4 to a PS5

A PS4-to-PS5 move can transfer supported saved data and game data directly. It is different from restoring a PS4 USB image: the PS5 transfer tool is designed to move content between active consoles, while a PS4 backup is a recovery image for a PS4 destination.

Requirements before starting

  • Sign in to the same PlayStation account on both consoles.
  • Update both consoles to current system software.
  • Connect both systems to the same network. A wired LAN connection can improve transfer speed.
  • Keep both consoles powered throughout the process.

Run the transfer

  1. On the PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > Data Transfer.
  2. Follow the prompts to locate the PS4 on the network and select the saved data and game data to move.
  3. Start the transfer and wait for the completion message before disconnecting either console.

Sony warns that powering off either system during transfer can damage or lose data. Do not use a power switch, unplug a cable, or force a restart even if the progress display appears slow.

What a PS4 USB backup does not do on a PS5

A PS4 backup is not a general-purpose PS5 restore file. Use the PS5 transfer process for the supported cross-generation move, and keep the original PS4 intact until you have opened several transferred games and confirmed that their saves are present.

Protect PS5 saves with cloud storage

PS5 saved data is primarily protected through PlayStation Plus cloud storage and synchronization. Sony’s current guidance allocates up to 100 GB for PS5 saved data and another 100 GB for PS4 saved data, with up to 1,000 PS4 saved-data files. Availability and features depend on having an eligible PlayStation Plus plan.

Turn on automatic synchronization

  1. On the PS5, open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
  2. Choose Saved Data (PS5) or Saved Data (PS4), depending on the game.
  3. Open the synchronization or auto-upload settings and enable automatic sync.
  4. Leave the console connected to the internet in Rest Mode if you want background uploads when you are not playing.

Synchronization uses the most recent save between the console and cloud. Before replacing a console, launch the games that matter, allow them to finish saving, and wait for synchronization to complete rather than assuming the latest progress has already uploaded.

Download saves to a replacement PS5

Sign in with the same account on the new PS5, open the saved-data settings, and download the required cloud saves to console storage. PS4 saves stored in the cloud while using a PS5 may require a manual download to PS5 storage; they are not necessarily placed on the console merely because automatic upload is enabled.

Why a USB save export is not available for PS5 saves

Sony’s transfer guidance states: “You can’t copy PS5 saved data from your PS5 console to a USB drive.” Do not treat a USB stick as a PS5 save backup. Use cloud storage, a supported console transfer, or both. A USB drive can hold game installations, screenshots, or a PS4 full backup, but it cannot provide an ordinary file copy of PS5 saved data.

Keep downloaded digital games without downloading everything again

Digital purchases are associated with the account that bought them. After signing in on the destination console, open Game Library and download owned titles again. Deleting a downloaded game does not cancel the purchase; it removes the local installation. Your save is a separate item and must still be protected through the appropriate save-backup method.

Use USB extended storage for a game library

A compatible USB extended-storage drive can retain PS4 and PS5 game data. Sony specifies a minimum capacity of 250 GB and a maximum of 8 TB for PS5 USB extended storage. This storage is intended for game installations, not saved-data backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Compatible PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage.
  • PS5 games can be stored there, but must be copied back to the PS5 internal SSD before play.
  • Moving a PS5 game from extended storage to internal storage is usually faster than downloading the entire title again, but it still requires enough free internal space.

Use the PS5 storage settings to move or copy titles between console storage and USB extended storage. Keep the drive connected and use the console’s safe-disconnect option before unplugging it.

Do not confuse PS4 backup media with PS5 extended storage

The PS4 full-backup procedure requires a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted drive with at least twice the backup-file capacity. PS5 extended storage has its own compatibility and formatting process and is managed as game storage. A drive prepared as extended storage is not automatically a PS4 full-backup drive, so plan separate media or reformat only after moving any files you need.

Use an M.2 SSD for PS5 game expansion

An M.2 SSD installed in a compatible PS5 expansion bay can store and launch supported PS4 and PS5 games. It is useful when internal capacity is the bottleneck and you want fast local access to a large library. It does not copy or preserve PS5 saved data, and removing the SSD is not a substitute for cloud synchronization or console transfer.

Think of an M.2 SSD as an expansion destination: it reduces redownloads and frees the built-in drive, while your saves remain protected separately.

Understand PlayStation Plus streamed and downloaded games

PlayStation Plus games behave differently depending on whether you stream them or download them. Sony states that when a PlayStation Plus game is streamed, its saved data is stored on PlayStation. When the game is downloaded, the save is stored on the console storage of the PS5 or PS4.

Move progress between streamed and downloaded play

  1. Upload the save from the current device to PlayStation Plus online storage.
  2. On the other device or installation mode, download that save to console storage.
  3. Launch the game only after confirming that the downloaded save is present, so a new blank save does not overwrite the progress you intend to keep.

This workflow matters when you switch from streaming to a local installation, change consoles, or move between PS4 and PS5 versions. The game entitlement and the saved-data location are separate decisions.

A practical replacement-console checklist

When replacing a PS4

  1. Sync trophies from Trophies > OPTIONS > Sync Trophies.
  2. Make a PS4 USB backup through Settings > System > Back Up and Restore > Back Up.
  3. Verify that the backup completed and keep the USB drive disconnected from unrelated formatting operations.
  4. On the replacement PS4, restore only after copying away any data already on that console.
  5. Sign in and check several saves before erasing or selling the old system.

When replacing a PS5

  1. Enable automatic synchronization under Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
  2. Connect the old PS5 to the internet and Rest Mode, then wait for the latest saves to upload.
  3. Use console-to-console transfer when both systems are available, or download the saves from cloud storage on the new PS5.
  4. Open representative games and confirm progress before resetting the old console.
  5. Download digital purchases from Game Library, or connect the compatible USB extended-storage drive that contains your installations.

Troubleshoot common backup problems

The PS4 rejects the USB drive

Check the file system first: the PS4 full-backup process requires FAT32 or exFAT. Then check capacity. Sony requires at least twice the size of the backup file to be available, so a drive that appears large enough can still fail if it lacks the required free space. Move unrelated files elsewhere and retry.

The PS5 save is missing from a USB drive

This is expected for PS5 saved data. Sony does not support copying PS5 saves from the console to USB. Enable cloud synchronization or use a supported console transfer instead. USB storage can still hold compatible game installations, but those installations do not contain a portable PS5 save export.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A transferred game starts without the expected progress

Confirm that you used the same PlayStation account on both consoles and that the correct game edition is installed. For cloud recovery, manually download the relevant PS4 or PS5 save to console storage. For a streamed or downloaded PlayStation Plus title, upload from the source and download to the destination before launching.

A PS5 game on USB will not launch

That behavior is normal. PS5 games stored on USB extended storage must be copied to the internal SSD before play. PS4 games are the ones that can run directly from compatible extended storage. Keep enough internal capacity free for the PS5 titles you intend to play.

The console transfer appears stuck

Do not power off either console while the transfer is active. Verify that both systems are on the same network and updated, and use a LAN cable where possible. If the transfer fails, restart only after the console reports that it has stopped, then retry with both systems connected directly and with unnecessary network traffic reduced.

Best practice for ongoing protection

  • On PS4, make a fresh USB backup after major milestones or before a system reset, and include applications when avoiding redownloads is important.
  • On PS5, keep automatic cloud synchronization enabled and allow Rest Mode internet access.
  • Maintain enough cloud capacity; the documented limits are 100 GB for PS5 saves, 100 GB for PS4 saves, and up to 1,000 PS4 saved-data files.
  • Use USB extended storage or an M.2 SSD to manage game installations, but never count either as a save backup.
  • Before selling or deleting a console, verify saves inside several games on the destination system, not merely that a transfer or upload message appeared.
