Back up a Playdate before you reset it, repair its software, or investigate filesystem problems. Connect it to a computer with a data-capable USB cable, choose Settings > System > Reboot to Data Disk, and copy the complete Data folder to a clearly named location. Eject the mounted Playdate before disconnecting it. That folder contains game progress and saves, and its contents can be copied to another Playdate later.

The safe backup sequence

The essential order is simple: create the copy first, verify that it is present, and only then troubleshoot. A reset or filesystem mistake can remove the files that preserve your progress. Panic’s documented workflow uses the Playdate’s Data Disk mode rather than a special backup application.

  1. Connect the Playdate to a computer with a USB data cable.
  2. On the Playdate, open Settings > System > Reboot to Data Disk.
  3. Wait for the Playdate to mount as a disk on the computer.
  4. Open the mounted volume and copy the entire Data folder to a clearly named backup folder on the computer.
  5. Check that the copy finished and that the backup folder is accessible before changing anything on the Playdate.
  6. Eject or unmount the Playdate volume from the computer.
  7. Press A on the Playdate to leave Data Disk mode and return to the settings menu.

Do not unplug the cable while the volume is still mounted. The copy is your recovery point; the mounted device should be treated as a file system that must be disconnected cleanly.

Why the Data folder is the important part

Playdate storage separates installed software from the writable information that games create while you play. The official SDK describes a writable Data directory for each game’s saved state and other data, separate from the read-only application bundle. Panic identifies the Playdate’s top-level Data folder as the place containing game progress and saves.

Location or mode Purpose What to do during a backup
Data folder Game progress, save files, and other writable game data Copy the entire folder
Games folder Installed game files Leave it alone unless a separate, specific recovery task requires it
Read-only app bundle The game program itself Do not edit files directly
Data Disk mode Lets the computer access the Playdate as a mounted disk Use it to copy files, then eject the volume

Copying only an individual save file can miss other writable data a game expects. A complete Data-folder copy preserves the folder structure that Playdate games use.

What you need before starting

  • A computer: The official procedure requires a computer that can mount the Playdate as a disk and hold the copied folder.
  • A USB cable that carries data: A cable intended only for charging will not provide the file connection needed for Data Disk mode. A USB-C data cable is the key physical accessory.
  • Enough storage: The computer must have room for the complete Data folder. If you want a second local copy, an external USB drive can retain another copy after the first has been made.
  • A stable connection: Keep the cable connected while the volume is mounted and while the copy is running.

You do not need PC-repair software or a streaming service to create this backup. The operation is direct file copying over USB.

Detailed procedure

1. Connect the Playdate for data transfer

Connect the Playdate to the computer with the USB cable. Use a cable capable of data transfer, not merely charging. Keep the device and cable undisturbed until the backup and safe eject are complete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Enter Data Disk mode from the Playdate

On the Playdate, open Settings, select System, and choose Reboot to Data Disk. This is the supported path for exposing the device’s storage to the computer. You are not browsing the files through the normal game interface; the reboot changes the device into a disk that the computer can mount.

3. Confirm that the computer mounted the device

After the reboot, look for the Playdate as a newly mounted disk on the computer. Panic’s instruction is: "Your Playdate should now be mounted as a disk on your computer." Open that volume only after it appears. If it does not appear, do not start deleting or renaming files on the Playdate; use the troubleshooting section below.

4. Copy the complete Data folder

Open the mounted Playdate volume and locate the top-level Data folder. Copy that entire folder to the computer. Put it in a clearly named location that identifies the device and the occasion, such as a folder labeled with the Playdate and the date of the troubleshooting session. The name is for your own organization; the important requirement is that the copy remains complete and easy to identify.

Do not move the folder, rename items inside it, or edit its contents while you are making the backup. Make a separate copy on the computer so the original remains untouched until you have confirmed the backup exists.

5. Verify the copy before touching the device

Wait for the file-copy operation to finish. Open the destination folder and confirm that the copied Data folder is present and can be browsed. Check that the operation did not stop with an error and that the folder is in the location you intended. If you are keeping a second copy on an external USB drive, create it only after the first copy has completed.

This verification is a practical checkpoint, not a license to alter files. If the copy failed, keep the Playdate connected and resolve the transfer problem before resetting or attempting filesystem repairs.

6. Eject and leave Data Disk mode

Use the computer’s normal eject or unmount command for the Playdate volume. Wait until the operating system confirms that it is safe to remove. Then press A on the Playdate to return from Data Disk mode to the settings menu. Only after both steps should you disconnect the USB cable.

If the Playdate does not appear as a disk

The documented process depends on the computer mounting the device. Work through these checks without modifying the Playdate’s files:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm that the cable is a data-capable USB cable and that both ends are firmly connected.
  2. Return to the Playdate’s menu and select Settings > System > Reboot to Data Disk again.
  3. Wait for the reboot to finish, then check the computer for a newly mounted volume.
  4. If the volume appears, open it and look specifically for the top-level Data folder.
  5. If it still does not appear, stop before a reset or repair. Disconnect only after following the computer’s safe-eject behavior when a volume is available.

A missing mounted volume is a connection or mounting problem to solve first. It is not a reason to improvise by editing hidden, unrelated, or system files.

Restoring progress to another Playdate

Panic documents transferring the Data-folder contents to a new Playdate. The destination device must be placed in Data Disk mode so the computer can access its storage.

  1. Connect the destination Playdate to the computer with a data-capable USB cable.
  2. On that Playdate, choose Settings > System > Reboot to Data Disk.
  3. Wait for the destination volume to mount.
  4. Open the backed-up Data folder on the computer.
  5. Copy the backed-up Data-folder contents into the corresponding location on the destination Playdate.
  6. Allow the copy to finish, then eject or unmount the destination volume.
  7. Press A on the destination Playdate to leave Data Disk mode, and disconnect the cable only after the safe-eject step.

The operation is a transfer of the saved Data contents, not an invitation to replace unrelated folders. Keep the destination’s folder structure intact and avoid editing files that are not part of the backup.

Sideloaded games need an extra check

Sideloaded games can behave differently when a new build is installed. Panic notes that you should launch a new copy at least once before expecting its Data folder to appear. If the game has not run, there may be no corresponding writable folder yet.

When a new sideloaded copy has no Data folder

Start the new copy on the Playdate once, then return to Data Disk mode and inspect the storage again. The first launch gives the game an opportunity to create its writable data location. Back up or restore only after that location is present.

When two versions have different folder names

Older and newer sideloaded builds can use different folder names. In that situation, the old save contents may not automatically appear in the new build’s folder. Panic documents that the contents may need to be copied manually between the two folders.

Before doing that manual copy, preserve the original backup unchanged. Work from a duplicate if you need to experiment, and copy only the save data that belongs to the game. Do not rename unrelated folders or delete the old version until you have confirmed that the new build recognizes the progress.

Safe handling rules while the volume is mounted

Panic warns that directly accessing Playdate files can break the software. Data Disk mode is useful for a controlled backup, but it also exposes files that the system expects to remain consistent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Copy the complete Data folder rather than selectively cleaning files.
  • Do not rename, edit, or delete unrelated files.
  • Do not alter the read-only app bundle or the Games folder as part of a save backup.
  • Keep the original backup untouched so it remains a reliable recovery point.
  • Always eject or unmount the Playdate before removing the cable.
  • Do not begin a reset, repair, or other troubleshooting operation until the copy has finished and been checked.

If a troubleshooting guide asks you to remove a particular file, make and verify the backup first, then follow that guide’s instruction separately. The backup procedure itself does not require deleting anything from the Playdate.

Choosing where to keep the backup

Computer copy

The computer is the required first destination in the official workflow. Use a clearly named folder that you can identify later. Keep the copy separate from temporary downloads or files you might routinely delete.

Second copy on external USB storage

An external USB storage drive is optional. It can hold a second copy after the Data folder has been copied to the computer, reducing the chance that one damaged or accidentally deleted folder is your only recovery point. Make the second copy from the verified computer copy rather than repeatedly manipulating the Playdate volume.

What is not part of this workflow

No named cloud-backup service is required by Panic’s instructions, and no repair utility is needed to create the save backup. The essential path is Playdate Data Disk mode, a computer, and a data-capable USB connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before-reset checklist

  • The Playdate is connected with a data-capable USB cable.
  • Settings > System > Reboot to Data Disk has been selected.
  • The computer shows the Playdate as a mounted disk.
  • The complete top-level Data folder has been copied.
  • The destination copy is present and the transfer reported no error.
  • Any second copy you want to retain has been made from the computer copy.
  • The Playdate volume has been ejected or unmounted.
  • You pressed A to return to the settings menu before disconnecting.

Once every item is complete, you have a recoverable copy of the writable game data and can proceed with the troubleshooting task that prompted the backup.

Common mistakes and the safer alternative

Mistake Why it creates risk Safer alternative
Using a charge-only cable The computer cannot receive the file connection required for Data Disk mode Use a USB cable that supports data transfer
Copying only one visible save file Other writable game data or the expected folder structure may be missed Copy the entire Data folder
Resetting before the copy finishes The recovery point may be incomplete or absent Wait for completion and verify the destination first
Editing files while browsing Panic warns that direct access can break Playdate software Copy files only; leave unrelated items unchanged
Unplugging without ejecting The mounted volume may not close cleanly Eject or unmount, press A, then disconnect
Expecting a new sideloaded build to have data immediately The game may not have created its writable folder yet Launch the new copy once, then check Data Disk mode
Assuming differently named sideloaded folders are interchangeable Old and new builds can store data under different folder names Keep the original backup and manually copy the appropriate contents only when needed

Limits of a Playdate save backup

This process backs up the writable Data contents that preserve game progress, saves, and other game-created data. It does not turn the Playdate into a full disk image, and it does not require copying every installed game file. The Games folder and read-only application bundles serve a different purpose from the save data.

Moving the Data contents to another Playdate is documented by Panic, but compatibility can still depend on the game build. Sideloaded versions are the clearest case: different builds may use different folder names, requiring a deliberate manual transfer. Preserve the untouched backup so you can retry without losing the original files.

After troubleshooting

If the troubleshooting operation changes the Playdate’s storage, return to Data Disk mode and use the verified backup when restoring progress. For a different Playdate, copy the backed-up Data contents into the corresponding destination location, then eject safely. If the game is sideloaded, launch the destination copy once when necessary so its writable folder exists before transferring contents between matching locations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The dependable habit is to make the Data-folder copy before every reset or filesystem intervention, keep at least one untouched copy, and treat Data Disk mode as a controlled transfer session rather than a general-purpose file browser.
