Back up a PC game in two separate layers before it disappears: preserve the installed game and installer files, then copy saves, settings, mods, and other user data from their actual locations. Steam’s built-in backup covers only compatible Steam-managed installations; it does not reliably archive every save or piece of custom content. Keep the copies on an external drive, make a second copy, and test a restore while the original installation still works.
This approach protects your files without promising that the game will always launch. A future installation may still require your Steam account, third-party DRM, an activation server, a launcher, patches, or another online service.
What you need to preserve
A delisted game can involve several different kinds of files. Treating them as one backup is the most common preservation mistake.
| Layer | What it contains | Typical dependency | How to preserve it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Installed game | Executable files, data archives, and installed patches | Steam or another launcher may need to validate the files | Use Steam Backup Game Files and copy the complete installation directory |
| Installer or downloaded package | Files used to install the game later | May still require an account, activation, or a launcher | Keep every lawfully downloaded installer and its notes |
| Save data | Progress, profiles, campaigns, and local achievements | Usually title-specific; cloud synchronization can overwrite versions | Copy the exact save folders to dated offline storage |
| Configuration | Graphics, key bindings, controller profiles, and preferences | Often stored outside the game directory | Copy configuration files and export profiles where the game supports it |
| Custom content | Mods, maps, add-ons, screenshots, and user-created assets | May be in separate folders or managed by another tool | Copy each relevant folder and record required mod versions |
| Account and launch information | Store account, launcher, redistributables, and activation requirements | Online services or closed authentication servers | Write the details in a text file; never copy or share credentials |
Valve says Steam’s tool works only for games that “completely download, install, and patch through Steam.” A title with an external launcher, separately downloaded installer, or unusual patch process may need manual copying even when it appears in your Steam library.

Why Steam Cloud is not an archive
Steam Cloud synchronizes selected files between computers; it is not a dated, independent backup. A newer but damaged local file can synchronize over a good copy, and a conflict can present two versions without telling you which one is more complete. Steam Support also says its ability to recover lost saves is limited.
Keep a local copy outside the Steam userdata tree. Use a date in the folder name, such as GameName_2026-10-19_saves, so each snapshot remains identifiable. Leave the original files untouched until you have verified the copy and, ideally, restored it on another installation.
Before you uninstall or the store listing disappears
- Launch and exit normally. Start the game, load the newest progress, save, and quit through its normal menu. This gives the game a chance to flush pending data to disk.
- Record the current state. Note the game version shown by the launcher or title screen, the Steam account that owns it, the launcher involved, installed redistributables, mods, and whether an internet connection is required.
- Create a Steam backup. In Steam, open Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select Backup game files. Choose a destination and record the date and location. If the command is absent or fails, use the manual copy procedure below.
- Copy the complete installation directory. In the game’s Properties window, choose Installed Files and use Browse to open the folder. Copy that entire folder, not only the executable. Include downloaded patches and legally obtained installer files stored elsewhere.
- Preserve Steam library metadata when making a manual copy. The corresponding
appmanifest_*.acffile in the library’ssteamappsdirectory tells Steam about the installed app. Copying it can make recognition easier, but it does not bypass validation, account checks, or missing downloads. - Locate saves and settings. Start with the game developer’s support page because paths differ by title. If no authoritative path is documented, inspect the common locations listed in the next section.
- Copy user-created material. Include mods, custom maps, screenshots, controller profiles, and configuration files that matter to you. Valve notes that custom content may sit outside the normal Steam backup set.
- Make two physical copies. Copy the backup to an external hard drive or portable SSD, then create a second copy on another drive or backup medium. Keep at least one copy disconnected after the transfer.
Where PC games commonly store saves
There is no universal PC save directory. A game can use one path for saves and another for settings, and a launcher can redirect either one. The following Windows locations are search points, not guarantees.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDocuments and DocumentsMy Games
Check %USERPROFILE%Documents and %USERPROFILE%DocumentsMy Games. Look for a folder named after the game, publisher, or engine. Some titles place screenshots and configuration beside saves, so copy the complete game-specific folder unless the developer says otherwise.
Roaming, Local, and LocalLow AppData
Use File Explorer’s address bar with %APPDATA% for Roaming data, %LOCALAPPDATA% for Local data, and %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLow for LocalLow data. Search for the title, publisher, or developer name. Do not copy the entire AppData tree; isolate the folders belonging to the game.

Saved Games
Inspect %USERPROFILE%Saved Games. This is a separate Windows root used by some games and can be overlooked when a player checks only Documents.
Install directory and shared data
Some older or portable titles save beside their executable. Check the installation folder for directories such as saves, savegame, profiles, or userdata. A few programs use C:ProgramData, which is hidden by default. Copy only the title-specific folder and preserve its permissions and subfolders.

Steamworks documents different platform roots. On macOS, inspect the user’s Library/Application Support, Library/Containers, and related title-specific folders. On Linux, check the home directory’s .local/share, .config, and .steam locations, including the game’s Proton prefix when the title runs through Proton. The developer’s support instructions are the best authority because folder names and compatibility layers vary.
How to identify the right folder
- Change one harmless in-game setting, exit, and sort candidate folders by modification time.
- Create a new test save, exit, and look for a file whose timestamp changes.
- Read the game’s official support page before moving or deleting anything.
- Copy the entire title-specific folder, including small files that may contain profile IDs or metadata.
Manual Steam-library copy
A manual copy is useful when Steam Backup Game Files is unavailable, when you want a readable folder structure, or when the title uses files outside Steam’s compatible set.
- Exit the game and Steam so files are not changing during the copy.
- Open the Steam library folder, then
steamappscommon, and copy the game’s complete directory. - From
steamapps, copy the matchingappmanifest_*.acffile with the installation folder. Keep it beside a note identifying the library path and date. - Copy any separate launcher installer, patch, or redistributable that you lawfully downloaded. Do not assume the game directory contains these components.
- Store the files on external media in a clear structure, for example
GameNameInstall,GameNameSaves,GameNameConfig, andGameNameMods.
The manifest can help Steam recognize an existing installation, but Steam may still verify every file or download missing content. It is metadata, not an offline license.

Verify that the backup is usable
A copy that merely finishes transferring is not necessarily a recoverable backup. Verification should happen while the original game still launches.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Check the transfer
- Compare the source and destination folder sizes.
- Compare file counts and investigate any copy errors, skipped files, or permission warnings.
- Open several large archives and representative save files from the backup to confirm that the drive can read them.
- Retain the original installation until every check is complete.
Restore to a separate environment
Use a second Steam library or another PC rather than testing over the only working installation. Steam recommends testing backup media. Restore the Steam backup through Steam’s restore function, or point Steam at the manually copied library and allow file verification. Then place the saved-data folder at the exact title-specific path.
Test saves and cloud conflicts
- Start the restored game without opening the original installation.
- Confirm that it reaches the main menu and that the expected version is installed.
- Load the newest backed-up save and check inventory, progress, and settings.
- If Steam displays a local-versus-cloud conflict, compare timestamps and choose deliberately. Do not assume the cloud copy is newer or complete.
- After loading the save, make a small test save, exit, and confirm that the new file appears in the restored save folder.
Once the test succeeds, record the restore date and the exact steps. That note can save time months later when the original installation is no longer available.
Restoring a delisted game later
If you still own the title
Keep the original Steam account and library metadata. A delisted title may remain downloadable to existing owners, but availability is platform-dependent and must be checked for the specific title. If Steam still offers it, install or restore it normally, then copy the backed-up saves to the documented location.
Using Steam’s restore flow
- Open Steam and choose the option to restore a game backup.
- Select the backup set and follow the destination prompts.
- Allow Steam to verify the installation and download anything it identifies as missing.
- Install required redistributables or the external launcher if the game needs them.
- Place saves and configuration files in their title-specific locations, then launch and test before replacing any newer files.
Using a manual library copy
- Install Steam on the restoration computer and sign in to the owning account.
- Add or create the library location where the copied files will live.
- Place the copied game directory under
steamappscommonand restore the matching manifest understeamappswhen possible. - Start Steam and let it discover the installation; use Verify integrity of game files so missing or changed files are identified.
- Restore saves only after the game has created or confirmed its expected user-data path.
If the account no longer authorizes the title, an activation server has closed, or a required launcher is unavailable, files alone cannot solve that platform dependency.

What an external drive can—and cannot—do
An external hard drive or portable SSD is practical because it can hold the installed files, installers, saves, settings, mods, and documentation in one place. A second physical copy protects against a single drive failure, while disconnecting one copy reduces exposure to accidental deletion or ransomware.
| Protection goal | Useful practice | Remaining limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Recover from a bad transfer | Compare sizes and file counts, then test a restore | A corrupted source can be copied consistently unless you test before deleting it |
| Survive one drive failure | Maintain a second copy on another physical medium | Both copies can be lost in the same incident if stored together |
| Preserve a playable installation | Keep game files, manifest, installers, and version notes | Steam, DRM, activation, patches, or online services may still be required |
| Protect progress | Keep dated local save snapshots outside Steam userdata | Some games encrypt, sign, or bind saves to an account or machine |
| Recreate the setup | Record launchers, redistributables, mods, and required settings | Third-party downloads or servers may disappear |
Legal and ethical boundaries
Preserve files you obtained lawfully through the publisher, store, or your own installation. Do not upload copyrighted game files or obtain replacement installers from unauthorized “backup” sites. The U.S. Copyright Office states that uploading or downloading copyrighted works without the copyright owner’s authority can infringe the owner’s exclusive reproduction or distribution rights.
A personal copy does not grant permission to redistribute the game, share an account, remove DRM, or bypass an activation system. Keep your archive private, retain proof of ownership where appropriate, and follow the game’s license and the laws that apply in your country.

Steam Backup Game Files is missing
The game may not be fully downloaded, installed, and patched through Steam, or it may rely on an external launcher. Finish pending updates, then use a manual copy of the installation and user-data folders.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The restored game starts but has no saves
The saves are probably in a different path, under a different Windows account, or still being controlled by Steam Cloud. Close the game, locate the developer-documented folder, copy the dated save snapshot there, and resolve any cloud prompt by comparing timestamps.

The backup occupies much less space than expected
Check whether you copied only a shortcut, a manifest, or a launcher cache. Compare folder sizes with the original, confirm that hidden files were included, and copy the complete steamappscommonGameName directory plus separate installers.
Steam downloads the game again
The library path or manifest may be wrong, or verification found missing files. Add the correct library, place the directory under steamappscommon, restore the matching manifest when available, and run file verification. A download does not necessarily mean the manual copy was useless; it may indicate that Steam requires files you did not archive or cannot validate them offline.
The game launches only while online
That is an authentication dependency, not a failed file backup. Note the required account, launcher, and service in your archive. If the service is permanently closed, the files may not provide a lawful or technically workable route to launch.
A preservation checklist
- Launch the game, create or load the newest save, and exit normally.
- Record the game version, owning account, launcher, redistributables, mods, and internet requirements.
- Run Steam’s Backup game files command when the title is compatible.
- Copy the complete installation folder, installer files, and matching
appmanifest_*.acfwhen making a manual Steam-library archive. - Find and copy saves, settings, mods, maps, screenshots, and profiles from title-specific locations.
- Keep a dated local save copy outside Steam’s userdata tree.
- Copy everything to an external hard drive or portable SSD and make a second physical copy.
- Compare sizes and file counts, then restore to a separate library or test PC.
- Launch the restored game, load the newest save, and handle cloud conflicts deliberately.
- Store a text file with the version, paths, restore steps, and service dependencies.
The practical limit of game preservation
File preservation gives you the best chance of reinstalling a delisted PC game, but it cannot turn a licensed, service-dependent product into a permanently independent program. Steam ownership records, third-party DRM, activation servers, mandatory patches, external launchers, and always-online components can all remain necessary. The honest goal is a verified, lawful archive that preserves as much of the working installation and personal data as possible, with its dependencies clearly documented.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I copy Steam’s userdata folder instead of finding the game’s save path?
Use the title’s documented save location first and keep a dated copy outside Steam’s userdata tree. A broad userdata copy can contain useful data, but it is not a substitute for identifying the files the game actually reads.
Can I restore a backup to a different Windows user account?
Sometimes, but games that bind saves to a profile, account, or machine may reject them. Test under the intended account and keep the original save snapshot unchanged until the restored copy loads successfully.
What should I do if the backup drive is formatted or fails later?
Use the second physical copy, recreate the archive on a replacement drive, and repeat the restore test. A single external drive is storage, not redundancy.
