Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBefore a game shuts down, first identify where its progress is stored: on your device, in a platform cloud service, or on the publisher’s servers. Back up any eligible local or platform-cloud save, confirm the copy is current, and check the game’s official shutdown announcement for export or migration options. A platform backup cannot capture progress that exists only on publisher servers.
First, identify what kind of progress you can save
“Online game” can mean several things. A game may synchronize a local save, store some progress on publisher servers, or require those servers to run. A platform cloud feature covers only eligible save files; it does not prove that server-held characters, inventories, rankings, or account details can be exported.
- Local save: Files stored on your PC or console. You may be able to make a separate copy, depending on the platform and game.
- Platform cloud save: A supported save synchronized through a service such as Steam Cloud or Nintendo Switch Save Data Cloud. Confirm that the specific game supports it and that its latest backup completed.
- Publisher-server progress: Data held by the game’s publisher. Check the game’s shutdown notice for an official export, transfer, or offline-play option; do not assume one exists.
Make a backup and verify it
- Find the shutdown announcement. Read the publisher’s notice for the exact end date and any instructions or deadlines for exporting or migrating data.
- Check which backup routes the game supports. Look at the game’s support information and the platform’s per-game cloud-save indicator or compatibility list.
- Wait for synchronization to finish. A cloud feature being enabled does not prove the latest session has uploaded. Resolve any conflict by comparing the displayed dates with your actual progress.
- Make a separate copy where you can access the save file. Copy the relevant local save to another location, such as a separate drive, and keep the original. Do not assume an installation backup includes save data.
- Verify the copy. Check its timestamp or confirm that the platform reports a recent backup. Before restoring anything, compare dates and preserve the newer copy; a restore can overwrite current data.
A backup may preserve a file without making it usable after shutdown. Whether it can be restored or read without the original game service depends on the game and its save format.
Back up saves on Steam for PC
Check Steam Cloud support and sync status
Open the game’s Steam Store page and look for the Steam Cloud indicator. Developers choose which files their games upload, so support for one game does not establish support for another. Wait for the client to finish syncing before closing Steam or switching devices. If Steam presents a cloud conflict, compare the shown dates and select the copy that matches your latest actual progress. Launching without resolving a conflict can result in lost progress. Steam’s Cloud documentation also says its support team cannot recover lost saves or resolve cloud conflicts.

Look for local save files
Steam documents these default locations for local Steam Cloud files:
- Windows:
C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata - Linux:
~/.local/share/Steam/userdata
Folders under userdata can contain files indexed by Steam account ID and game AppID. Their presence does not prove that they hold a game’s complete save. Many games do not use Steam Cloud for saves, and other developers use their own save locations. If the location is unclear, check the game’s official support information or contact its developer. Copy identified save files to a separate destination and leave the original in place. Steam Support describes the Cloud folders and notes that save locations vary.

Do not confuse a game backup with a save backup
Steam’s “Backup game files” feature is not a universal save export. Valve-created game backups omit saved games and custom content, while third-party save locations vary. Steam also notes that many games installed through third-party installers, along with some free-to-play or MMO-style games, are incompatible with the installation backup tool. A manually copied, locally accessible save can be stored on a USB drive, but that will not retrieve server-only progress or guarantee the save will remain usable after shutdown. Steam’s game backup FAQ explains these installation-backup limits.
Back up saves on Nintendo Switch or Switch 2
Confirm that the game supports Save Data Cloud
Nintendo Switch Save Data Cloud requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership and works only with compatible software. Check the game’s software menu, eShop information, or Nintendo Store listing for the Save Data Cloud indicator. Nintendo says compatible save data can be backed up or downloaded between Switch and Switch 2 using the same Nintendo Account. Saves are user-specific and are not transferable between users. Nintendo’s Switch Online information and its per-title compatibility details explain the service’s scope.

Back up and check the timestamp
For a supported title, use either route:
- From HOME: Highlight the game, press + or –, select Save Data Cloud, choose the user, then select Back Up Save Data.
- From System Settings: Open System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud, choose the user and title, then back up the save.
Check the last backup time under System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud. Nintendo recommends checking the internet connection, automatic-backup settings, and whether the game supports cloud saves when a backup is missing or out of date. Nintendo’s backup instructions give the menu paths.
Understand access and restore risks
If your Nintendo Switch Online membership expires, access to cloud backups is unavailable; resubscribing within 180 days restores access. Downloading a cloud save can overwrite the console’s current save, and the overwritten data cannot be recovered. Compare which copy is newer before downloading. If the console’s save is newer, Nintendo says you can manually back it up by selecting Back Up Save Data. The available Nintendo guidance does not establish a general-purpose method to export Switch saves to microSD or USB; do not treat game installation files or screenshots as save backups. Nintendo’s backup guidance covers membership access and restore behavior.

Choose the route that preserves what you need
When a game offers more than one route, compare these details before relying on a copy:
- Does the exact game support the route?
- Is the data stored locally, in a platform cloud, or on publisher servers?
- Will you still be able to access the copy after a subscription or game service ends?
- Can the save be restored or read without the original service?
- Could restoring it overwrite a newer save?
The available official guidance here establishes Steam and Nintendo workflows, but not current PlayStation or Xbox procedures. For those platforms, consult the relevant console’s official support instructions before acting. For every platform, the game’s own shutdown notice is the source to check for title-specific export, transfer, or offline-play instructions.
