Before installing a Fallout 4 update, make an untouched copy of your PC saves, downloaded mod archives, mod-manager profile, enabled-plugin list, load order, and custom INI files. On supported consoles, use Creations to choose Save Load Order to Bethesda.net before the update. Keep the PC copy on a separate external drive (and optionally in a second cloud location), record the exact pre-update setup, and do not overwrite that backup when testing the patched game.

What to back up before you update

A Fallout 4 save is only one part of a modded installation. A save may depend on specific plugins, load order, script files, textures, frameworks, and INI settings. If an update changes the game executable or breaks a mod, copying only the .fos save files may leave you unable to recreate the setup that produced them.

Create one dated, read-only baseline containing these layers:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Save files: the saves you actively use and any earlier manual saves you may need for recovery.
  • Downloaded mod archives: the original archive files stored by your mod manager or downloaded manually. These are different from merely having a mod enabled.
  • Mod-manager profile data: the profile, virtual-file rules, deployment state, and other manager-specific configuration used by your current setup.
  • Plugin and load-order records: an exported text list of enabled plugins and their order, plus screenshots if your tools provide no export.
  • Custom configuration: edited Fallout 4 INI files and any manager- or mod-specific configuration files that are outside the default game files.
  • A written inventory: game build, mod manager and version, date, enabled plugins, and any notes about unusual settings or patches.

Do not edit this baseline while troubleshooting. Make a separate working copy for experiments after the update.

Windows PC: copy the Fallout 4 saves

Bethesda Support lists the default Windows save directory as C:Usersuser.nameDocumentsMy GamesFallout4Saves. Its instructions are to open that directory and copy the save files you want to back up. See the official Fallout 4 PC save-backup instructions if your Documents folder is redirected or the folder is not where expected.

Step-by-step PC save backup

  1. Exit Fallout 4 completely. Close the launcher and your mod manager as well, so no program is writing a save or profile while you copy it.
  2. Open File Explorer and paste C:Usersuser.nameDocumentsMy GamesFallout4Saves into the address bar. Replace user.name with your Windows account name.
  3. Select the files you want to preserve. Include current saves and older manual saves that could be useful if the newest save becomes damaged or incompatible.
  4. Copy, rather than move, the files to a newly created folder named with the date and game build, such as Fallout4-pre-update-2026-10-19.
  5. Open the destination and verify that the copied files are present. Check the folder’s total size and file count against the source so an interrupted copy is obvious.
  6. Set the backup folder to read-only or otherwise treat it as an archive. Never point the game or mod manager at this untouched copy during normal play.

If the default path is empty, check whether Windows has redirected Documents to another location, whether you use a different Windows account, and whether Fallout 4 has created saves under a different installation or profile. Do not guess a replacement directory; locate the active Documents folder used by your installation before copying.

Preserve the PC mod setup

Save files alone cannot restore a working modded game. The exact folders and labels differ between mod managers, so use the manager’s own profile, archive, and export functions where available rather than copying only the visible game directory.

1. Archive downloaded mod files

Locate the manager’s download or archive directory and copy the original mod archives to the dated backup. If you installed a mod manually, copy the downloaded archive or installer you retained. Keep the archive filenames and versions intact; renaming them can make later identification harder. If a manager stores archives outside its profile, include that separate folder too.

2. Capture the active profile

Use the manager’s profile or instance tools to identify the profile currently used to launch Fallout 4. Export or copy that profile’s configuration, including enabled and disabled mods, deployment rules, and any profile-specific settings. If the manager supports a complete profile backup, use it and place the resulting file in the same dated archive.

3. Export the plugin list and load order

Export a plain-text list of enabled plugins in their current order. Include both full plugins and light plugins when the tool distinguishes them. Save the export beside the profile backup and take screenshots of the manager’s load-order view as a visual cross-check. A text export is easier to compare after an update; a screenshot preserves information that an export may omit.

4. Copy custom INI and configuration files

Identify every Fallout 4 INI file you changed, including profile-specific INIs managed outside the main game directory. Copy the custom files without replacing the live versions. Also record which settings are intentionally different from defaults, such as archive invalidation or display options, so you can tell a deliberate setting from an update-related change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Record the pre-update state

This record makes a later comparison possible even if the manager resets a profile or the game updates before you notice.

Use a separate backup destination

Store the dated archive somewhere that an update or a mod-manager cleanup cannot overwrite. A portable external SSD or HDD is a practical choice for saves, archives, profiles, exports, and INIs. Bethesda’s instruction is to copy the desired files; the separate-drive recommendation adds protection against accidental changes to the live installation.

When available, keep a second copy in a cloud service or another physical location. Treat that as an additional copy, not a replacement for the local archive: a cloud-synchronized folder can propagate deletions or changed files if you accidentally modify the backup. After copying, open several files from the destination and confirm that the archive, export, and configuration files are readable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Control when the update installs

Updates can arrive before mod authors have released compatible versions. Pause automatic updates, choose a delayed-update option, or use an offline mode when your platform supports it. The exact controls vary by launcher and console, and an offline option can prevent online features until you reconnect.

Immediately before launching the update, check Bethesda’s current announcements and the authors’ compatibility notes for the mods you use. Update timing, affected files, and compatibility status are volatile; do not assume that a procedure that worked for one patch applies unchanged to the next.

Console workflow: archive the load order

Consoles do not provide the same direct access to a Windows save directory or mod-download archive. For supported Creations workflows, Bethesda’s notice for the May 27, 2026 Fallout 4 update said: “To avoid load order complications, please save your console load order prior to the May 27th 2026 Fallout 4 update.” It directs players to choose Save Load Order to Bethesda.net. Read the official Console Creations storage and load-order notice for that event, and verify the current instructions before a later update because behavior is platform- and update-dependent.

Step-by-step supported console archive

  1. Start Fallout 4 and open the Creations menu using the profile and account that normally play the modded game.
  2. Confirm that the displayed enabled Creations and their order match the setup you want to preserve.
  3. Choose Save Load Order to Bethesda.net and wait for the confirmation to finish before closing the menu.
  4. Record the date, console platform, game build, and any Creations that were installed manually or are not shown in the archive.
  5. Take screenshots of the ordered list if the console allows it. Screenshots are a local reference if the online archive is unavailable.

The official notice establishes an online load-order archive, not a general-purpose copy of every console save or mod file. Capacity, restoration behavior, and availability can change with the platform and update, so do not assume that an archived order contains downloadable mod binaries or local save data.

PC and console capabilities compared

Capability Windows PC Supported console Creations workflow
Copy save files locally Yes. Copy the Windows Fallout4Saves directory files. Direct file copying is not exposed in the documented workflow; use the platform’s own save-management facilities.
Archive load order Export a plugin/load-order text file or use manager-specific profile tools. Use Save Load Order to Bethesda.net where supported; exact behavior depends on platform and update.
Preserve mod archives Copy the manager’s download/archive directory and any manually retained installers. Not established by the official load-order notice; an online order archive should not be treated as a mod-archive backup.
Restore speed Usually faster when the save, profile, exports, and archives are already on a local drive; actual time depends on archive size and manager. Depends on platform storage, network access, and Bethesda.net availability; no fixed time is stated.
Dependence on online services Local save and configuration copies can be restored without an online archive, although downloading missing mods may still require service access. The documented load-order archive relies on Bethesda.net, and service or account availability can affect retrieval.
Archive capacity Limited by the external drive or other destination you choose. Not stated in the cited load-order notice; do not assume a particular capacity.

What to do after the patch

Do not immediately overwrite the baseline with a new save. First determine whether the game, mod manager, and essential mods behave as expected.

  1. Launch the updated game with the new setup only after confirming that your pre-update archive is safely disconnected or otherwise protected from writes.
  2. Test from a disposable copy of a save, not the only copy of an important playthrough.
  3. Check for missing plugins, disabled Creations, changed load order, missing textures, script errors, crashes, or a prompt to create a new character.
  4. Keep notes about the first failure, the exact build, and the changes made. Do not make several unrelated changes at once; that makes the cause harder to identify.
  5. If the update is stable, create a new dated post-update backup rather than replacing the pre-update archive.

Recovery when the update breaks the setup

If the patched game crashes, shows missing content, or refuses to load a save, exit the game and preserve the post-update state for diagnosis. Do not delete the new profile, logs, or configuration before you know whether they are useful.

Restore a Windows PC installation

  1. Close Fallout 4, the launcher, and the mod manager.
  2. Move the current post-update saves and profile data to a separate diagnostic folder instead of deleting them.
  3. Restore the pre-update mod-manager profile, plugin/load-order export, downloaded archives, and custom INI files from the untouched dated backup.
  4. Restore the backed-up save files to the active Fallout4Saves directory. Keep the original post-update saves outside that directory while testing to avoid confusing old and new files.
  5. Reinstall or redeploy the exact mod versions represented by the archived profile, using the copied archives where possible.
  6. Launch with the restored order and test a copy of the affected save. If it still fails, compare the recorded build and mod versions with the current game and consult the relevant mod author’s compatibility guidance.

Restoring files cannot make an incompatible game executable accept a mod that requires an older build. In that case, the archive still gives you a known-good reference while you wait for compatible mod updates or use a platform-supported way to run the earlier build.

Find a modded save that appears missing

Bethesda Support notes that modded saves can appear to be missing. Its troubleshooting guidance recommends checking profiles and viewing all saves to locate them. Follow the Bethesda Support instructions for missing modded saves before assuming that the files were erased. On PC, also confirm that the game is reading the same Windows account and save directory you backed up.

Restore a console load order

Use the console’s supported Creations or Bethesda.net load-order controls to retrieve the archived order, if the current platform and update still provide that function. Recheck the resulting order manually against your screenshots and notes. Because the notice does not promise a backup of local saves or mod binaries, use the console’s own save-recovery options and reinstall any unavailable Creations through the supported service rather than expecting the load-order archive to contain them.

Common mistakes and fixes

  • Only copying the newest save: Include earlier manual saves so a bad or partially migrated save is not your sole recovery point.
  • Copying the game folder but not the manager profile: A visible installation may omit downloads, virtual deployment rules, or profile-specific INIs. Export or copy those separately.
  • Relying on a screenshot alone: Screenshots show order but cannot reinstall files. Keep archives and a text export on PC.
  • Letting synchronization overwrite the archive: Keep the baseline on a separate drive and make it read-only or otherwise protected.
  • Testing against the only backup: Duplicate the archive before changing anything and retain the untouched original.
  • Assuming console archival is universal: The Bethesda.net command is documented for supported Creations workflows; platform and update behavior can differ.
  • Restoring saves without their dependencies: Restore the matching profile, plugins, archives, and INIs before judging whether the save itself is damaged.
  • Ignoring the update date: The May 27, 2026 notice was tied to that update. For another patch, check the current Bethesda announcement and the relevant mod authors immediately before installing.

A compact pre-update checklist

  • Exit the game and mod manager.
  • Copy the Windows saves from C:Usersuser.nameDocumentsMy GamesFallout4Saves, or use the console’s supported save-management tools.
  • Copy downloaded mod archives and manually retained installers.
  • Export or copy the active mod-manager profile.
  • Export the enabled plugin list and load order; take screenshots.
  • Copy custom Fallout 4 and profile-specific INI files.
  • Record game build, manager version, profile name, plugin order, and backup date.
  • Place the archive on a separate external drive and optionally create a second cloud copy.
  • Pause automatic updates where supported and check current compatibility notices.
  • For supported consoles, choose Save Load Order to Bethesda.net before the update.
  • Keep the baseline untouched while testing the patched game.
