Download every game, expansion and available update while the storefront still works, then make separate backups of your save data, account records and storage media. A store stopping new purchases does not necessarily stop downloads immediately. Nintendo’s Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShops illustrate the distinction: purchases ended at 5:00 p.m. Pacific on March 27, 2023, while Nintendo said previously purchased software, DLC and updates would remain redownloadable “for the foreseeable future.” That promise should be treated as temporary breathing room, not a permanent archive.
The safest plan preserves three different things: the game packages and updates, the save data, and the account and purchase information needed to use them. A copied file may still depend on the original console, account, encryption keys or an activation server, and no local backup can preserve an online-only service after its servers are gone.
What to preserve before a digital storefront closes
Game ownership is not a single file. Before a shutdown, inventory each item you care about and preserve it at the layer where it exists.

Keep at least two locations: the original console or card and a separate copy on another storage device. Label each copy with the platform, title, region, software version or update date, save-backup date and the account that owns the license. A second copy protects against a dead SD card, accidental deletion, theft or a failed console.

Purchase shutdown versus download shutdown
A storefront can disable new purchases while leaving redownload and update servers online. Nintendo’s official notice says: “As of March 27, 2023 at 5:00 PM Pacific Time, it is no longer possible to make purchases in Nintendo eShop for the Wii U system and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems.” The same notice adds that, after that date and “for the foreseeable future,” users could still redownload games and DLC and receive software updates on those systems.
Nintendo later ended online play and other online communication for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS on April 8, 2024. Those are separate services from downloading a previously purchased title. A game can therefore remain downloadable while multiplayer, rankings, messaging or other server features no longer function. Check the service’s own shutdown announcement for each date and capability rather than assuming that every online feature ends together.
Because “for the foreseeable future” has no fixed end date, act while authentication and download servers are healthy. Sign in, verify your purchase history and download content before an emergency—such as a failing console or corrupted card—forces you to depend on a service that may later be reduced.

Pre-closure checklist
- Inventory your library. List every purchased game, DLC item, Virtual Console title, demo that matters to you, and update required by the game. Note region and the account that bought it.
- Confirm account access. Sign in on the original hardware, verify the account or Nintendo Network ID associated with purchases, and document recovery email, two-factor method and any required credentials in a secure password manager.
- Download while the store is operational. Install each owned game, its DLC and every available update. Launch important titles once so the console finishes installation and creates its save area.
- Create supported save backups. Use the platform’s own save-export or backup menu, not an unverified file-copy method. Record which titles were backed up and when.
- Make a second storage copy. Preserve the original card or console untouched and copy permitted data to separate storage. Do not assume that a normal computer copy removes encryption or account checks.
- Verify the archive. Open the copied folders or archive, compare file counts and sizes where the platform allows it, and perform a restoration test only on disposable or already documented data.
- Schedule maintenance. Recheck the copy periodically, replace media showing errors and refresh the archive after major system or game updates.
Nintendo 3DS and Wii U: a concrete case study
The 3DS documentation provides unusually specific save-backup rules. Downloaded-game save data is stored on the SD card. Nintendo’s Save Data Backup menu creates backups for downloadable software and Virtual Console software, with a maximum of 30 title backups on one SD card. The game and its backup must remain on that same SD card for restoration, and restoring a backup overwrites the current save data.
What the 3DS shutdown dates mean
Purchases in the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShops ended at 5:00 p.m. Pacific on March 27, 2023. Nintendo stated that redownloads and software updates would continue for the foreseeable future. Online play and other online communication ended on April 8, 2024. A downloaded game can therefore remain playable offline even when its online features no longer connect.

Step 1: verify the account and purchase history
On the console, sign in and confirm the Nintendo Network ID used for purchases. Nintendo’s redownload instructions require the associated Nintendo Network ID to be present after a format when purchases were made with that ID. Record the ID, console region, system serial and purchase history before changing hardware or formatting anything.
Step 2: download software, DLC and updates
Open the eShop’s redownload area and install every owned title you want to retain. Download each title’s DLC and any available update. Let installations finish and launch the game once. Keep the console connected to power during a large queue so an interruption does not leave partial installs.

- Open System Settings.
- Choose Data Management.
- Open Save Data Backup.
- Select each supported downloadable or Virtual Console title and create its backup.
- Record the title, region, date and the SD card used.
The menu supports up to 30 title backups per SD card. If you own more than 30 supported titles, document which backups occupy the card and plan a separate, carefully controlled card rotation only if the platform’s instructions allow it. Never remove the card and mix a backup with software from another card: Nintendo specifies that the software and backup must stay on the same SD card for restoration.
Step 4: protect the original SD card
Do not delete downloaded software to make room. Nintendo’s 3DS FAQ states that save data is lost when a downloaded title is deleted from the SD card, even though the title itself may be redownloadable. Leave the original card in the console or store it safely after powering down. Make a second copy only where the platform permits it, and do not represent an ordinary computer copy as a way to defeat Nintendo’s encryption or account checks.
An SD card is the required medium for the 3DS Save Data Backup function. Choose a card with enough capacity for the installed library and verify that its capacity and format are compatible with the console. Keep a separate external drive or other storage device for the archival copy; the second device is protection against SD-card failure, not a replacement for the card that the 3DS needs for restoration.

Step 5: test restoration safely
Restoration replaces existing save data. Before testing, make a fresh backup of the current state or use a title and console state whose data can be discarded. With the game and backup on the same SD card, use the Save Data Backup menu to restore and then launch the game to confirm that the expected progress returns. Do not test by overwriting the only copy of a valuable save.
How to make and label a second copy
Use two independent locations
Keep the working copy on the original console or SD card and an archival copy on a separate drive. If the second device stays permanently beside the console, theft, fire or a power incident can destroy both; store it elsewhere when practical. For irreplaceable saves, a third copy in another physical location provides additional resilience.
Use precise labels
For every game, record:
- Platform and model, such as Nintendo 3DS or Wii U.
- Game title, edition and region.
- Installed version or update date.
- Save-backup date and the platform menu used.
- SD card or drive identifier and the folder containing the copy.
- Account or Nintendo Network ID that owns the license, stored securely rather than exposed in a public filename.
A simple inventory file can be plain text or a spreadsheet stored with the archive. Include the date of the last successful restoration test and any known online-service dependency.
Do not confuse copying with preservation
A computer may be able to see files on removable media without being able to use them. Encryption, proprietary formats, console-specific keys and license checks can prevent a copied file from restoring on another device. Keep the original hardware and account active until you have demonstrated a supported restore. Never promise that a file-level copy preserves multiplayer, leaderboards, cloud services or other server-side functionality.
Choosing a backup method on other platforms
Steam, PlayStation, Xbox and other storefronts use different combinations of local files, cloud synchronization, console encryption and activation servers. The exact procedures and post-closure behavior are not interchangeable, so verify the current official instructions for the platform before moving data.

If an official export tool exists, prefer it over manually copying hidden folders. If cloud synchronization is available, download or export a local copy as well; a cloud account is convenient but is still dependent on the provider’s servers and your ability to sign in.

The console was formatted before the account was verified
Stop and recover the original account credentials before attempting redownloads. On 3DS and Wii U, the Nintendo Network ID associated with purchases may be required after a format. Do not create a replacement account and assume it will inherit the old library.
The game was deleted to free SD-card space
For 3DS downloaded titles, deletion also deletes that title’s save data. Redownload may restore the program, but it does not restore the deleted progress. Preserve the original card immediately if it still contains other saves, and do not write unnecessary data to it.
The SD card reports errors
Power down and avoid repeated repair attempts that write to the card. Secure a second copy of any readable data, then replace the failing card only after documenting the original. A replacement card may require the original account and platform process to make content usable; it is not automatically a complete migration.

A restore overwrote newer progress
Nintendo warns that restoring a 3DS save backup overwrites current save data. Keep dated backups instead of one rolling copy, and test restoration on a disposable state. If newer progress was overwritten and no newer backup exists, the platform may provide no way to reconstruct it.

The game launches but online functions fail
Treat this as a service-lifecycle issue, not a corrupted local backup. Nintendo’s April 8, 2024 end date for Wii U and 3DS online play and other online communication demonstrates that a preserved installation cannot revive a closed server. Preserve local or offline modes separately from expectations about network features.
After the storefront is gone
Keep the account, original console and labeled storage together. Do not sign out, format or replace the only working device until you have confirmed that your archive can be restored. When a platform announces a new shutdown phase, repeat the inventory: download newly released patches that you own, export any newly supported saves and update your records.
Review the archive at least once a year and after any storage warning. Read a sample file from the second copy, check that the drive mounts, compare its inventory with your list and replace aging media before it fails. For 3DS titles, retain the same SD card that contains both the software and its Save Data Backup entries; a disconnected backup on another card cannot satisfy the documented restoration requirement.

If you own a Nintendo 3DS or Wii U, start with the console’s supported menus, not a computer utility. Download the library, DLC and updates; create Save Data Backup entries on the SD card; retain that card and console; then make a separately stored archival copy and test a restoration without risking the only current save. For any other storefront, map the five questions in the comparison table to its official documentation before assuming that a copied installer or cloud save will work after closure.
