Back up your Dark Souls II save while the game and its Steam process are fully closed, keep an untouched copy away from the game folder, and test mods only while offline. For Scholar of the First Sin on Windows, the save to copy is %APPDATA%DarkSoulsII<your account id>DS2SOFS0000.sl2. Before going back online, remove every mod component, restore clean game files if necessary, and verify the expected character state from a known-good save. No official source guarantees that any mod workflow is ban-proof.
A save backup protects your progress from corruption or an unwanted change; it does not make modified executables or assets safe for online matchmaking. Edition, DLC state, platform and server family must also match when you restore a file.
What a Dark Souls II backup protects—and what it does not
The .sl2 file contains your local character and progression data. Keeping dated copies gives you a rollback point if a mod corrupts a save, changes a character irreversibly or leaves the game unable to load the expected state.
That protection has limits. A clean save does not prove that the executable, DLLs, archives, loaders or other assets in the installation are unmodified. The available guidance does not establish that restoring only a clean save makes a modified installation safe for online play. Treat save recovery and online safety as two separate jobs:

Locate the Windows Scholar save file
Scholar of the First Sin path
For Scholar of the First Sin on Windows, close the game and Steam first, then open File Explorer and enter this path in the address bar:
%APPDATA%DarkSoulsII<your account id>DS2SOFS0000.sl2
%APPDATA% expands to your Windows roaming application-data folder. Replace <your account id> with the account-specific folder present on your computer. The filename shown above is the Scholar save identified by PCGamingWiki.
If you see more than one account folder
Do not guess which folder is current. Close the game, note the folders and their modified times, then make a separate copy of each candidate before experimenting. You can identify the active one by comparing its timestamp with the last session you intentionally saved. Preserve the originals rather than renaming or moving them in place.

Do not mix editions or platforms
FromSoftware’s FAQ distinguishes the original game, Scholar, DLC states and platform/server families. An original Dark Souls II save can continue in Scholar, but a save after DLC is applied cannot be loaded by the non-DLC game. Saves from PS3, Xbox 360 or Windows DX9 cannot be used on PS4, Xbox One or Windows DX11 because those versions use different game servers. A copy is therefore useful only when the destination matches the source’s edition and compatibility conditions.
Create a backup before installing or changing a mod
- Exit the game normally. Wait until the game window has closed and any saving activity has finished.
- Close Steam completely. Steam’s game process must not still be running when you copy the file. If Steam remains open in the background, use its exit command and confirm that no Dark Souls II process is active.
- Open the save location. In File Explorer, paste
%APPDATA%DarkSoulsII<your account id>and locateDS2SOFS0000.sl2for Scholar. - Create a dated backup folder on offline storage. A removable drive or another storage device held separately from the game installation keeps a copy available if the installation or local profile is damaged. Use a clear folder name such as
DS2-backups2026-10-19-before-mod; the date should be the actual creation date. - Copy, rather than move, the
.sl2file. Leave the original in its normal location and paste a second copy into the dated folder. Never make your only baseline copy by overwriting an older backup. - Preserve an untouched baseline. Make one copy before any mod is installed and mark it as the clean baseline. Keep separate, dated experiment copies after significant changes so that you can step back to the last known state.
- Record the context. In a text note beside each copy, record the edition (original or Scholar), DLC status, platform, date and the mod or change that was about to be tested. This prevents restoring a file into an incompatible edition or confusing a test state with the clean baseline.
- Test the backup. Steam Support says, “To avoid problems in the future, make sure to test any backups that you create.” Testing means restoring a copy in a controlled offline session and confirming that the expected character and progression appear. Keep the untouched baseline outside the active save folder while doing this, then return to the intended working copy.
Steam’s installation-backup feature is not a substitute for this file copy. Steam Support notes that third-party save files may need to be copied separately from a Steam installation backup, so include the .sl2 file in your own backup plan.
Choose a backup method with the right failure protection
| Method | What it gives you | Important limitation | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Separate offline copy on removable storage | A file held independently from the game installation and its local save folder | You must copy it yourself and label versions accurately | Primary clean baseline and dated experiment archive |
| Steam installation backup | A backup of Steam-managed game installation data | It does not automatically include every third-party save file; the .sl2 may need separate copying |
Recovering installation files, alongside—not instead of—the save archive |
| Test-restored backup | Evidence that a particular copy can load and shows the expected character state | Testing must be done offline and does not certify online safety | Highest confidence before you begin risky mod experiments |
A basic USB flash drive is sufficient for dated .sl2 copies, provided it has enough free space and remains readable. The safety value comes from a clean rollback copy and offline testing, not from a particular storage product.

- Disconnect from the online test. Do not launch the game into matchmaking while recovering a file. Keep the system offline for the restore and verification session.
- Close Dark Souls II and Steam completely. A running process can hold the active file open or write over your replacement.
- Preserve the current file. In the active save directory, rename or copy the current
DS2SOFS0000.sl2to a separate dated folder. This gives you a way back if you selected the wrong backup. - Copy the known-good file into the active directory. Use the backup from the same edition, DLC state and platform/server family. The destination filename must be
DS2SOFS0000.sl2. - Launch while still offline. Load the character and check the name, level, equipment, inventory and progression you expected from the backup date. If the state is wrong, exit without connecting and try the correctly labeled copy.
- Do not delete the baseline after a successful restore. Keep it as an independent reference for later experiments.
If Windows reports that the file is in use, stop and close the game and Steam again rather than forcing a replacement. If the restored character is missing or unexpectedly old, the likely causes are a wrong account folder, an incorrectly labeled copy or an edition/DLC mismatch; preserve the current file and investigate those possibilities before trying another overwrite.

Run mod tests offline
There is no official, ban-proof procedure for using Dark Souls II mods. The safest interpretation of the available guidance is to keep the entire test session offline and follow the specific mod author’s instructions and comments. Community guidance also advises removing all mod files before returning online.
Prepare an isolated test state
- Start from the untouched baseline or a dated copy that you have already verified.
- Close the game before installing or replacing any mod files.
- Disconnect the PC from online services for the whole test. Offline status prevents an accidental matchmaking session while you inspect the mod.
- Install only the components required by the mod’s author. Keep a written list of every file added, replaced or changed so that removal is possible.
- Use the game offline to test loading, menus, characters and the specific feature you intended to evaluate.
- When a test ends, close the game before changing files again. Save a new dated copy only if you deliberately want to preserve that experimental state; do not overwrite the clean baseline.
Why a clean save is not enough
Mods can alter executable code, dynamic libraries, archives or other assets independently of the save. Replacing the .sl2 file removes only the save-state risk. It does not remove a modified executable or asset, and no source here guarantees that an apparently clean save will prevent detection of a modified installation.
Understand the specific online-ban risk
No universal ban statistic or guarantee
No trustworthy topic-specific statistic establishes how often Dark Souls II mod users are banned. Do not treat a community anecdote, a successful offline test or a restored save as proof that online play is safe. The individual mod author’s instructions and comments may describe intended online use, but that is community guidance rather than an official guarantee.
A documented anti-cheat warning
PCGamingWiki records a concrete warning about Durazno, a tool used to reduce controller deadzone: it can trigger anti-cheat and permanently ban an account from online matchmaking. That is a reported risk for that specific tool and behavior, not proof that every mod has the same outcome. It is also a reason not to assume that a mod is harmless merely because it changes input or presentation rather than character data.

What online multiplayer includes
FromSoftware’s FAQ describes online multiplayer as including co-op, versus play, messages and bloodstains. If you use any of those features, you are entering the online environment for which the game’s anti-cheat and server rules apply. Keep experimental files and sessions out of that environment.
Return online only after a clean-up pass
- End the offline session and close the game. Wait for the process to terminate before touching the installation.
- Remove every mod component. Use the mod’s own uninstall instructions and your file list. Remove loaders, DLLs, patched executables, altered archives and configuration files, not just the visible launcher.
- Restore official game files where needed. If the mod replaced installation files, use Steam’s file-verification or reinstallation process appropriate to your edition. A save-file replacement alone does not undo those changes.
- Restore a known-good save if the test changed progress. Perform the replacement while Steam and the game are closed, then verify the expected character state offline.
- Check edition and DLC compatibility. Do not move a DLC-era save into a non-DLC game, or cross the original/Scholar and platform/server boundaries described by FromSoftware.
- Launch once without matchmaking. Confirm that the game starts with clean files and the expected save before enabling online features.
- Reconnect only after the clean check. If any mod file remains, the game behaves unexpectedly or you cannot identify the active save, stay offline and resolve it first.
This sequence reduces avoidable exposure; it cannot guarantee that an account will not be sanctioned. The sources do not promise a ban-proof workflow.

Troubleshoot common backup and restore failures
The file is not at the expected path
- Confirm that you are using Scholar of the First Sin on Windows; the documented filename and path apply to that case.
- Paste
%APPDATA%DarkSoulsIIinto File Explorer rather than browsing from the game-installation directory. - Check each account-ID folder and compare modification times with your last deliberate save.
- Do not create a replacement file with a guessed name. Preserve any existing files and identify the active folder first.
The game loads the wrong character or an old state
- Close both the game and Steam before copying again.
- Verify that the backup came from the same edition, DLC state and platform/server family.
- Check that the copied file is named exactly
DS2SOFS0000.sl2and is in the active account folder. - Keep the unexpectedly loaded file as a separate diagnostic copy instead of overwriting your baseline.
The backup works but online play still looks risky
That is expected: loading a clean save tests recovery, not installation integrity or ban immunity. Remove all mod components, restore official files where necessary and remain offline until the clean-up pass is complete.

You overwrote the wrong backup
Stop making changes. Search the dated offline archive for the untouched baseline and the most recent verified copy. Restore only after closing Steam and the game, and record which file you used so the same mistake is not repeated.
A durable backup policy for future experiments
Use one-way versioning rather than a single constantly replaced file. Keep an untouched baseline, a verified recovery copy and dated experiment copies. Label each with the date, edition, DLC state, platform and mod set. Store at least the baseline separately from the game installation, and test a copy before relying on it.
When an experiment is complete, decide explicitly whether its save is disposable or worth archiving. If it is disposable, delete only that dated experiment copy—not the baseline. If it is worth keeping, note that it represents a modded or otherwise experimental state and never confuse it with the clean file used for online preparation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBottom line
Back up DS2SOFS0000.sl2 from the Scholar Windows path while the game and Steam are closed, keep an untouched copy on separate offline storage, and verify that a restore actually loads the expected character. Test mods offline, remove every mod component before reconnecting, and match edition, DLC, platform and server family. These steps improve recovery and reduce avoidable exposure, but no source guarantees that mod use is immune from an online ban.
