Let Steam Cloud finish synchronizing, then make a separate copy of the demo’s real save folder. On the new computer or Steam Deck, install the demo or full game, close it, place the backup in the matching save location, and resolve any Cloud conflict by comparing timestamps. A demo save continues in the full game only when the developer made the files compatible or configured shared Steam Cloud storage between the two app IDs.
What you need to know before moving a demo save
Steam Cloud is synchronization, not a universal backup. It can store supported save games, settings, profile statistics and other user-specific files, then download them before a supported game starts on another computer. The game must opt in, and its developer decides which files, platforms and app IDs participate. Valve notes that many games do not use Steam Cloud and that Steam cannot recover a save that was never synchronized or has been lost from the original machine.
The safest approach uses two layers:
- Steam Cloud: convenient synchronization when the game supports it.
- A dated manual copy: an independent copy of the actual save folder that you can inspect and restore if Cloud selects the wrong version or is unavailable.
Do not assume the save is inside the Steam installation directory. A game may store it in Documents, AppData, Saved Games, a publisher-specific directory or, on Linux and Steam Deck, inside a Proton compatibility prefix.

- Open Library in the Steam client and select the demo.
- Open the game’s Properties and check the General section for the Steam Cloud setting. The wording can change between Steam client versions; leave the setting enabled if you want Cloud synchronization.
- Launch the demo and save normally. Use the game’s own quit command rather than ending the process while it is writing.
- Exit to the desktop and wait until Steam indicates that synchronization has completed. Do not shut down, uninstall or start the destination copy while an upload is still pending.
Cloud behavior is game-specific. A Cloud icon or enabled setting does not prove that every save slot is synchronized, nor does it guarantee that Windows, macOS, Linux and SteamOS use compatible files. Treat the local copy as the authoritative backup until you have opened the transferred save successfully.
Where Steam demo save files are stored
Steam’s Cloud userdata folders
Steam’s default local Cloud userdata roots are:
| Platform | Cloud userdata root |
|---|---|
| Windows | C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata |
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata |
| Linux and SteamOS | ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata |
Inside userdata, Steam uses an account folder and an app-ID folder for Cloud data. The app ID is the numeric identifier assigned to a Steam application. These directories are useful when you are examining Cloud files, but they are not a promise that the game’s working save is stored there. A developer can use a completely different local path.
Common local save locations
- Windows:
Documents,%APPDATA%,%LOCALAPPDATA%andSaved Games. - macOS: the user’s
Libraryfolders, often under Application Support or another game-specific directory. - Linux: the game’s normal Linux save directory or a Steam-managed location.
- Steam Deck and other Proton installations: a per-game prefix under
compatdata/<appID>/pfx/, with the Windows save path inside that prefix.
For the exact location, use the game developer’s support instructions or the game’s own documentation. If you search manually, look for files whose modification time matches your last save, and do not move unrelated configuration folders until you know which files contain progress.

How to make a reliable manual backup
- Close the demo. Quit from its menu, then verify that it is no longer running in Steam. A save folder copied while the game is writing can contain a partial or inconsistent file.
- Identify the complete save folder. Copy the folder that contains the save slots and any companion metadata, not just the file with the newest timestamp. Some games keep slot data, indexes and profile information together.
- Preserve names and hierarchy. Copy the folder without renaming files or changing the directory structure. A full folder copy is safer than selecting individual slots.
- Create a dated destination. Put the copy on a USB flash drive, portable SSD or another backup location in a folder such as
DemoName-save-2026-10-19. The date should describe when the copy was made, not when the game was released. - Record the source details. Add a plain-text note beside the backup containing the demo name, Steam app ID if known, operating system, original save path and backup date. This is especially important when the demo and full game have different app IDs.
- Keep the original untouched. Do not overwrite the source save while testing the transfer. Retain at least one dated copy until the destination has loaded the expected slot and synchronized successfully.
Steam’s Backup Feature can create backup files for installed games, but Steam explains that third-party save locations vary. A restored installation may therefore need the save files copied back manually. A game backup is not a substitute for identifying and preserving the separate save folder.
How to transfer the save to another computer
Prepare the destination
- Install the same demo on the destination computer, or install the full game if you are attempting a supported demo-to-full-game continuation.
- Run it once, allow it to create its directories, then quit normally. This creates the expected folder structure and can reveal whether the game is using a different path on the destination operating system.
- If Steam immediately downloads an unwanted blank or older save, temporarily disable Cloud for that game before replacing local files. Re-enable it only after the intended files are in place and verified.
Copy the files
- Open the destination game’s save location. It may be different from the source because of the operating system, installation method or Proton prefix.
- Make a safety copy of any newly created destination save before replacing it. This gives you a way back if the game refuses the transferred files.
- Copy the backed-up folder into the matching destination path. Preserve the original filenames and directory structure.
- Do not launch the game while the copy is in progress. Wait for the file operation to finish before starting Steam or the game again.
Verify before allowing another sync
- Launch the game and check the expected save slot, character, level or other unmistakable progress marker.
- If the expected progress appears, quit normally so the game closes its files cleanly.
- Allow Steam Cloud to synchronize the verified local files. Keep the manual backup until you have confirmed that the destination still opens the correct progress after synchronization.
Can a demo save continue in the full game?
Sometimes, but Steam does not convert a demo save automatically. A demo and its full game normally have different Steam app IDs. Continuation works only when the developer has deliberately connected the two products in one of these ways:
- The demo and full game use a compatible save format and folder.
- The full game includes an import prompt or another documented migration step.
- The developer configured Steamworks Shared Cloud Storage so both app IDs can use the same saved data.
Valve’s Steamworks documentation says shared Cloud storage is most commonly used to share saved games between a demo and a full game. That configuration is a developer decision; an enabled Cloud setting on the demo alone is not evidence that the full game can read it.

When no official import is provided
You can make a manual experiment only after preserving an untouched backup. Copying the demo files into the full game’s expected directory may work, but some games require a folder rename, filename change or format conversion. Those details cannot be inferred from Steam’s general documentation. Follow the specific developer’s instructions, and do not overwrite the only copy of the demo save while testing.
Handling a Steam Cloud conflict
A conflict means the local computer and Steam Cloud contain files changed in different places. Steam asks you to choose which version to keep. Before selecting either option, preserve a manual copy of both available versions if Steam makes them accessible.
- Note the local and Cloud modification times shown by Steam or the file manager.
- Identify which version contains the progress you want. A newer timestamp is useful evidence, but open the files or inspect the save slot when the game provides a safe way to do so; a newer file can still be an empty or unwanted start.
- Choose the version with the desired progress only after the manual backup is secure.
- Launch the game and verify the slot. If it is wrong, quit without making further saves and restore from the dated backup.
Steam warns that Cloud data may not be recoverable. Selecting a conflict option is therefore a destructive decision unless you have preserved a separate copy.

Moving a demo save between Windows, macOS, Linux and Steam Deck
Cross-platform transfer depends on developer configuration. Steamworks supports platform-specific path overrides and cross-platform synchronization, but a game must configure those features; Cloud integration is not automatically portable across Windows, macOS, Linux and SteamOS.
Why Steam Deck transfers can be confusing
When a Windows game runs through Proton, its Windows-style save path can exist inside a per-app compatibility prefix rather than in the Deck’s ordinary Documents directory. The prefix is associated with the app ID, so a demo and full game can have separate locations even when they appear to use the same Windows path. Check the app ID and the game’s developer guidance before copying files.
Format and permission considerations
- A save created on one operating system may use a format the other build cannot read.
- Case-sensitive Linux paths can differ from case-insensitive Windows paths.
- A game may use separate platform-specific Cloud files even when the account is the same.
- Copying a file into the wrong Proton prefix can make the game appear to have no saves while leaving the real backup intact.
If the game officially supports cross-platform Cloud, let that synchronization complete before trying a manual copy. If it does not, treat the transfer as a developer-specific migration and keep the original files unchanged.

What to do when the transferred save is missing
The game starts from the beginning
- Quit immediately so the new blank save does not overwrite the transferred files or upload over the desired Cloud copy.
- Check that you copied the actual save folder, not only Steam’s installation directory or a shortcut.
- Confirm that the destination path belongs to the same app ID, edition and operating environment.
- Temporarily disable Cloud, restore the dated backup, launch once and inspect the result before enabling synchronization again.
Steam keeps downloading the wrong version
Close the game, preserve the local files, and disable Cloud temporarily. Replace the destination files with the known-good backup, verify the save in-game, then re-enable Cloud. If Steam presents a conflict, use the timestamps and the verified progress to select the correct side.
The demo is not listed in Steam Cloud
The game may not support Cloud, or the developer may not synchronize the save files you need. Continue with a manual copy and keep it on removable or other independent storage. Steam cannot reconstruct an unsynchronized save after the original drive is lost.
The full game rejects the demo files
Different app IDs, incompatible formats or a required import step are the likely causes. Restore the full game’s original files, search the developer’s support documentation for the exact demo-to-full-game procedure, and avoid guessing at filename or folder conversions.

The save works locally but not after synchronization
Cloud may be syncing a different path, a different platform variant or an older file. Compare the local save location with the files under the account and app-ID userdata folders, then keep the manual backup while determining which files the game actually reads.
Steam Cloud versus a manual copy
| Transfer method | Automation | Scope | Cross-platform behavior | Conflict recovery | Demo-to-full requirement |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Cloud | Automatic synchronization for supported files | Only the files the developer configured | Works across platforms only when the developer configured compatible paths and synchronization | Conflicts can require choosing local or Cloud data; recovery is uncertain without another copy | Requires compatible data or shared Cloud storage between the app IDs |
| Manual save-folder copy | Requires you to locate, copy and restore the files | The selected save folder, including files you deliberately preserve | Depends on the game’s file format, path and platform support | Best option for retaining an untouched dated version | Still requires a compatible format or developer-documented import process |
| Steam Backup Feature | Creates Steam backup files for supported installations | Game installation backup; third-party save locations can be separate | Does not guarantee that external save folders are restored automatically | Useful as an installation backup, but save files may need manual copying after restore | Does not create compatibility between separate demo and full-game app IDs |
A practical checklist
- Save in the demo and quit through its menu.
- Wait for Steam Cloud synchronization, if the game supports it.
- Find the real save folder rather than assuming it is inside the Steam library.
- Copy the entire folder to dated independent storage.
- Record the demo name, app ID, operating system, path and backup date.
- Install and run the destination game once, then quit.
- Disable Cloud temporarily if it is about to replace the desired local files.
- Back up any newly created destination files before replacing them.
- Copy the preserved folder into the matching destination path.
- Launch, verify the expected progress, quit normally and then allow the verified files to synchronize.
- Keep the untouched backup until the transfer has survived a second launch.
The key limitation to remember
Steam can move a demo save only when the game’s own save design allows it. Cloud synchronization helps when the developer enabled the relevant files and app IDs, while a manual copy protects you from missing Cloud support and bad conflict choices. For a demo-to-full-game move, compatibility or an explicit import mechanism is the deciding factor—not the fact that both products are in the same Steam account.
