Copy the game’s portable .sav or .srm file—not a save state—from the old handheld to the folder PokeDaisy uses on the new one. The default location is Android/data/com.pokedaisy.app/files/saves/. Keep the filename tied to the ROM, check for duplicate copies, and verify the trainer, party, location, and play time before deleting anything from the source device.
Which file is your Pokémon progress?
PokeDaisy stores progress in two different kinds of files. The normal, portable in-game save is a .sav or .srm file. It is written when you choose Save in the Pokémon game’s own menu and is the file to copy between Android handhelds. A save state is a separate emulator snapshot, stored under PokeDaisy’s states directory, and is not the normal transfer artifact.
The save filename is derived from the ROM filename. For example, a ROM named Pokemon Emerald.gba normally reads a file such as Pokemon Emerald.sav. If the ROM is inside a ZIP archive, use the ROM filename inside that archive when identifying the save. Do not rename a save casually: changing the base name can make the game appear to have no progress even though the bytes are intact.
Default save location
Unless you selected another location, PokeDaisy’s saves are in:

Android/data/com.pokedaisy.app/files/saves/
The path is app-specific. A folder chosen in PokeDaisy’s settings changes where the app looks; it does not move existing saves automatically. PokeDaisy’s documentation is explicit that changing the folder does not move any saves, so moving to a new location always requires an intentional copy.
Where PokeDaisy looks, and why duplicates matter
When opening a game, PokeDaisy searches in this order:
- the game’s own folder, including a per-game SAVE FOLDER if one is configured;
- the main saves folder selected in PokeDaisy;
- folders listed under ALSO LOOK IN.
If more than one matching filename exists, the copy found earlier in that order can be used instead of the one you just updated. A stale file in the main saves folder can therefore override a newer file in an ALSO LOOK IN folder. Treat one location as authoritative and remove or archive competing copies after you have verified the correct one.
Choose a transfer method before you start
Every method below can preserve the exact save bytes, but they differ in access, rollback protection, and the risk of leaving duplicate files. The table helps you choose a workflow that fits your hardware.
| Method | Preserves the exact file? | Rollback protection | Android access considerations | Duplicate-file risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| USB-C flash drive or computer | Yes, when you copy the matching .sav/.srm without editing it |
PokeDaisy’s dated backups still apply; keep the original source file until verification | Requires a compatible USB-C/OTG adapter, drive, or computer workflow | Low if you copy into one selected destination and clean up old copies |
| microSD card | Yes | Same PokeDaisy backups; retain the card copy as an additional rollback | Both handhelds must expose a usable card slot or reader | Moderate if the card copy is left in an ALSO LOOK IN folder |
| Shared or synced folder | Yes, after synchronization has finished | Depends on the sync tool; PokeDaisy still creates its own backups when it detects a changed save | Both devices need access to the selected folder and Android permission to it | High if a local copy and synced copy are both discoverable |
| RetroArch save directory | Yes, when the same core-compatible file is used | PokeDaisy backups apply; RetroArch’s own state files are separate | Add each core’s save directory to PokeDaisy’s ALSO LOOK IN list | High unless the main PokeDaisy saves folder is kept empty for that game |
A USB-C flash drive is a convenient optional removable-storage route, but check that the handheld supports the drive’s connector and USB-OTG mode. Whichever method you choose, do not overwrite the only source copy until the new handheld has passed the verification steps.
Step-by-step: move a save to another Android handheld
1. Make a clean save on the old handheld
- Open the Pokémon game in PokeDaisy.
- Use the game’s own menu to save. Do not rely only on an emulator save state.
- Wait for the game to report that saving has finished.
- Exit the game normally or close it after the save completes so the file is flushed to storage.
Saving in-game first matters because the file you copy represents the game’s own persistent progress. A state captured before the latest in-game save can later restore an older version of that save.

2. Locate the file and confirm its identity
Open a file manager or PokeDaisy’s folder tools and navigate to the configured saves folder. If you never changed it, start at Android/data/com.pokedaisy.app/files/saves/. Match the save’s base filename to the ROM you actually play. Check the extension: some games and cores use .sav, while others use .srm.

For a zipped ROM, identify the filename of the ROM inside the archive rather than the ZIP’s outer name. If you see several similarly named saves, compare their modified dates and, when possible, load each only on a disposable copy. Do not delete an uncertain file while the old handheld is still your only working installation.
3. Copy the source file without changing it
Copy the matching .sav or .srm to a USB-C flash drive, computer, microSD card, or a folder that both handhelds can reach. Use a copy operation rather than move, and leave the original untouched. Preserve the exact filename and extension.
If you are changing PokeDaisy’s saves-folder setting as part of the move, remember that the setting alone does not relocate existing files. Copy the file explicitly to the new folder after selecting it.
4. Prepare PokeDaisy on the new handheld
- Install PokeDaisy and complete its initial setup.
- Choose PokeDaisy’s private saves folder, or select a user-accessible shared folder through the app’s folder picker.
- If the game uses a per-game SAVE FOLDER, note that location because it takes priority over the general saves folder.
- Copy the source
.savor.srminto the location PokeDaisy will search, keeping the ROM-based filename.
PokeDaisy must be able to read the folder through Android’s storage permission system. The safest shared-folder approach is to select the folder from inside PokeDaisy rather than assuming a file manager’s path will remain accessible to the app.
5. Launch the same ROM and verify the result
- Open the same game ROM on the new handheld.
- Check several unmistakable details: trainer name, current location, party members, badges or story position, and play time.
- Make a small new in-game save, close the game normally, and reopen it.
- Confirm that the small change remains after reopening.
This two-part check proves both that PokeDaisy found the intended file and that it can write back to the folder. Only after it succeeds should you consider removing the old device’s copy.

6. Keep a rollback copy
Store the untouched source file somewhere safe until you have played on the new handheld and are satisfied. A dated filename on a computer, USB-C drive, or microSD card is enough for a manual rollback. Keeping this extra copy is especially useful when moving between different emulator cores or changing a game’s folder configuration.
What to do when Android blocks Android/data
Recent Android versions can restrict ordinary file managers from opening another app’s private directories. If you cannot browse to Android/data/com.pokedaisy.app/, do not assume the save is gone.
- In PokeDaisy, open Settings > FOLDERS.
- Use the folder picker to select a user-accessible folder on internal storage, a microSD card, or attached USB storage.
- Use PokeDaisy’s COPY PATH control when you need to give another app or computer the exact location.
- Copy the save into the selected folder, or add the folder under ALSO LOOK IN if it should remain an external location.
A user-accessible folder selected through PokeDaisy is preferable to repeatedly fighting a file manager’s permission screen. After selecting it, verify the folder’s contents from PokeDaisy and perform the launch-and-reopen test before deleting the original.

Use PokeDaisy’s automatic backups to recover from a mistake
PokeDaisy creates dated backups beside the active save in a folder named pokedaisy-backups. At game start, when it detects a changed save, it retains the newest 10 different backup copies. These are app backups, not cloud backups, so copy important ones off the handheld if you need protection against device loss.
Restore an earlier backup
- Open the game’s backup controls in PokeDaisy.
- Choose RESTORE BACKUP.
- Select the dated version that contains the progress you want.
- Confirm the restore, then launch the game and verify the trainer and location.
Before restoring, PokeDaisy preserves the current save as another dated copy. That design gives you a way back if you select the wrong date.
Import a save manually with LOAD SAVE
For a file that is outside the active folder, long-press the game in the library and choose LOAD SAVE. Select the external .sav or .srm file and confirm. PokeDaisy renames the current save to a dated backup before writing the imported file under the name the game reads. This is useful when a computer or another emulator produced the source file and you want PokeDaisy to perform the import safely.

Share one live save with RetroArch
PokeDaisy can read and write the same save that RetroArch uses. Instead of maintaining two manually copied files, add the relevant RetroArch core save directory under PokeDaisy’s search list.
- Identify the RetroArch directory for the core you use, such as
RetroArch/saves/mGBAorRetroArch/saves/gpSP. - In PokeDaisy, open Settings > FOLDERS > ALSO LOOK IN.
- Add that core’s save directory.
- Open the game in PokeDaisy and verify that the trainer, location, and party match the RetroArch version.
- Make a small in-game save in one emulator, close it normally, then open the other emulator and confirm the change.
When PokeDaisy finds a save in an ALSO LOOK IN folder, it plays and writes that file in place. Keep one authoritative copy for the game. If the same filename also exists in PokeDaisy’s main saves folder, the main-folder copy can take precedence and make RetroArch appear not to update. Move or archive the duplicate after confirming which file is current.
Save compatibility still depends on the game and emulator core using the same format. A file that loads in one core may not be interchangeable with another core that expects a different naming convention or format; preserve the extension and test with a backup copy first.
Use a synced folder safely
PokeDaisy can use a Syncthing-style synchronized folder as its save location. Select the folder itself in PokeDaisy’s folder settings. PokeDaisy searches that selected folder, but it does not treat nested version-history directories such as .stversions as active saves.
Synchronization timing is the main operational hazard. Close the game on the first handheld, wait for the sync tool to finish transferring the changed save, and only then open the game on the second handheld. Opening both devices while one is still writing can create competing versions or copy a partially updated file. Keep PokeDaisy’s automatic backups and an occasional offline copy even when synchronization is enabled.

Save state: a separate snapshot
PokeDaisy save states live under Android/data/com.pokedaisy.app/files/states/ in separate slots. They can capture a moment in the middle of a battle or before a decision, and PokeDaisy exposes 10 save-state slots. Loading an older state can also restore the game save as it existed when that state was created, rolling the in-game save backward.
Use states for quick experiments and difficult moments, but do not substitute them for the normal save during a transfer. If you must move a state for a specific experiment, move the matching state files as a separate, clearly labeled operation and still transfer the current .sav/.srm first.
Renamed-app upgrade: PokeDaisey to PokeDaisy
PokeDaisy version 1.1.0 changed the app name from PokeDaisey to PokeDaisy. Android treats the renamed application as a new package. Saves that remain only in the old private directory, Android/data/com.pokedaisey.app/, must be copied out before uninstalling the old app.

Troubleshooting common transfer failures
The new handheld says there is no save
- Confirm that the ROM and save share the same base filename and that the extension is
.savor.srmas expected. - Check whether the file is still inside a ZIP archive when PokeDaisy expects the extracted ROM’s name.
- Verify that PokeDaisy’s selected folder is the one containing the file.
- Check the game’s per-game SAVE FOLDER before the general saves folder.
- Close and reopen the game after copying; do not rely on a library refresh alone.
The wrong or older progress appears
- Close the game immediately so it cannot overwrite the file you want to keep.
- Inspect the game folder, main saves folder, and every ALSO LOOK IN folder for duplicate filenames.
- Remember that PokeDaisy checks the game’s own folder first, then the main saves folder, then ALSO LOOK IN locations.
- Compare the files’ modified dates and sizes, then keep one authoritative copy.
- Use RESTORE BACKUP if PokeDaisy replaced the current file, or import the known-good file with LOAD SAVE.
The save loads, but new progress will not persist
- Make a small in-game save, exit normally, and reopen to test writing.
- Re-select the destination folder through Settings > FOLDERS if Android permissions changed.
- Use COPY PATH to confirm that the path is the folder PokeDaisy can write.
- For a synced folder, wait for synchronization to finish before testing on the other handheld.
- Check that another duplicate is not being loaded on the next launch.
RetroArch and PokeDaisy show different progress
- Confirm that both are using the same ROM and core-compatible save format.
- Add the exact RetroArch core directory, such as
RetroArch/saves/mGBAorRetroArch/saves/gpSP, under ALSO LOOK IN. - Remove or archive the stale copy in PokeDaisy’s main saves folder, because it can take precedence.
- Close the writing emulator before opening the other one.
A reliable maintenance routine
For important Pokémon runs, keep one active save location, one offline copy, and PokeDaisy’s automatic backups. Save through the game menu before moving between devices, close the game cleanly, allow any synchronization to finish, and verify a distinctive in-game detail after every transfer. This routine avoids the two errors that cause most lost progress: copying a state instead of the in-game save and leaving duplicate filenames in higher-priority folders.
