Back up every save before a repair while the console still works. Use Save Data Cloud for games that support it; for games that do not, transfer each save to another working Switch. A nearby transfer is a move, not a duplicate: Nintendo deletes the save from the sending console, so verify the destination before shipping the original.
Choose the right protection method
Nintendo provides three different ways to protect save data. The correct choice depends on whether the game supports cloud backup, whether you have Nintendo Switch Online, and whether another Switch is available.

Do not treat these methods as interchangeable. Cloud backup is a recovery copy. Individual save-data transfer is a relocation. A full system transfer moves a user and associated data to a replacement system.

Prepare the Switch before handing it over
Complete preparation while the console can still start games and connect to the internet. If it stops booting before the procedure is finished, Nintendo’s documented methods may not give you a recoverable copy.

- Install the latest system update available to the console.
- Connect the console to the internet and keep it powered during every backup or transfer.
- Sign in and check that the correct Nintendo Account is linked to each user whose saves matter. A different local user or an unlinked account can leave the wrong data behind.
- Make a game-by-game list. Save Data Cloud availability is determined per game, not simply by whether the console has Nintendo Switch Online.
- If you will use another Switch, update and connect that console too, and keep both systems near each other.
- Have the game available on the destination so you can open it and test the transferred save before shipping the original.
Keep the original console connected and untouched until every transfer has completed and every important save has been checked on the destination. Power loss, a network interruption or sending the wrong user can remove your only usable copy.
Back up cloud-supported games
Nintendo’s January 2, 2025 transfer guidance says Nintendo Switch Online members can back up supported games and later download those saves to another system. This is the safest option when it is available because the source save remains on the console while a cloud copy is stored.
Make a fresh cloud backup
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Choose Data Management.
- Open Save Data Cloud.
- Select the user whose save you want to protect.
- Select the game and choose the command to back up the save data.
- Wait for the backup to finish before leaving the screen or disconnecting the console.
Repeat the process for every supported game you care about. A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for this service, and a game that does not offer Save Data Cloud cannot be backed up this way.

Return to the Save Data Cloud screen and confirm that the selected game has a current backup. Check the user name as well as the title: a backup under another local user is not a substitute for the save you intend to recover. Do not delete the local save or reset the console merely because the cloud backup exists; leave the original intact until the repair outcome is known.
Restore after the repair
On the repaired or replacement Switch, link the same Nintendo Account to the relevant user, keep Nintendo Switch Online active, open System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud, select the user and game, and download the backed-up data. Download only after confirming that the repaired console is ready to receive the save; downloading can replace the local save for that title.

Transfer games that do not support cloud backup
For a game without Save Data Cloud, Nintendo’s documented option is a direct transfer between two consoles. Nintendo Switch Online is not required, but both systems must have internet access, be near each other, and have the same Nintendo Account linked to the relevant user.
Send one save to another Switch
- Leave the original Switch powered on and connected to the internet.
- On the source console, open System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data.
- Choose Send Save Data to Another Console.
- Select the user and then the game whose save should move.
- On the destination console, open the same Transfer Your Save Data area and choose Receive Save Data.
- Follow the on-screen pairing and confirmation prompts on both consoles.
- Wait until Nintendo reports that the transfer is complete. Do not put either system to sleep, close the software or disconnect the network during the operation.
Repeat the procedure separately for every non-cloud game and every user that needs protection. The process is not a bulk copy to removable storage; it moves the selected save between consoles.
Understand the deletion warning
Nintendo explicitly warns: “This does not create a copy of your save data. Once sent, the save data file will be deleted from the source system.” Treat the send step as irreversible unless the destination has already received the save. If the destination fails, is using the wrong user, or cannot launch the game, stop and resolve that problem before sending anything else.
Verify before shipping
- On the receiving Switch, open the transferred game.
- Confirm that the expected profile, progress, inventory and most recent save are present.
- If the game has multiple save slots, inspect the slot you actually use.
- Only after successful verification should you sign out, pack or ship the original console.
Verification matters especially for games that cannot use cloud backup. A completed transfer message confirms the data moved; launching the game confirms that the destination can actually use it.
Use a full system transfer for a replacement console
Nintendo also provides a full transfer procedure for moving to another Switch. This is broader than selecting individual saves: it moves the user and associated data to the replacement system. Follow Nintendo’s on-screen full-transfer instructions on both consoles and keep them connected until the process finishes.

Plan for the consequence on the old console. After a full transfer, the account, user and associated save data are removed from the original system. This is appropriate when the replacement is becoming your primary console, not when you merely want a temporary safety copy before a repair.
Cloud-backed saves can be downloaded on the second console while the Nintendo Switch Online membership remains active. For games without cloud support, do not assume that a full transfer creates an additional recoverable copy; the rules depend on the destination and the game. If you need a non-cloud save available on a separate working Switch while the repair is performed, use the individual nearby transfer and verify it first.
What changes when the destination is a Nintendo Switch 2
Nintendo describes a specific distinction for local system transfers to Switch 2. Cloud-supported saves for linked users remain on the Switch and are copied to Switch 2 during the transfer. Saves for games without cloud support, or saves belonging to users without linked Nintendo Accounts, are deleted from the source as part of the transfer.
Before moving to Switch 2, link the correct Nintendo Account to every user and identify non-cloud games separately. Do not rely on the Switch 2 transfer to preserve an unlinked user’s save or a title that lacks cloud support. For those saves, perform and verify an individual save-data transfer to a working destination before beginning the broader move.
Why an SD card, USB drive or game card is not a save backup
Nintendo’s documented procedures for this situation use Save Data Cloud or console-to-console transfer. A microSD card, USB drive and game card should not be treated as a transferable save-data archive. Game software or screenshots stored on removable media do not replace the console save process described above.

Do not remove the microSD card and assume a repair center can restore the progress from it. Keep using the cloud or transfer workflow, and retain the original console until your destination save has been tested.
Repair-day checklist
- Update the original Switch while it still boots.
- Confirm the correct Nintendo Account is linked to each relevant user.
- For every game, check whether Save Data Cloud is offered.
- Complete a fresh cloud backup for each supported game.
- For every game without cloud support, use System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data and send it to a working nearby Switch.
- On the destination, launch each transferred game and confirm the expected progress.
- Keep the original console powered and connected until all backups, transfers and checks are complete.
- Only then erase, reset, sign out or ship the original system.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
The game has no Save Data Cloud option
Use the individual nearby transfer instead. It does not require Nintendo Switch Online, but you must have a second working console, internet access on both systems and the same Nintendo Account linked to the relevant user.
The transfer cannot find the other console
Bring both consoles near each other, connect both to the internet, update them, and reopen the transfer screen on each system. Confirm that the source uses Send Save Data to Another Console and the destination uses Receive Save Data. Do not proceed until the consoles identify the intended users.
The save appears to be missing on the destination
Check that you opened the correct game with the correct local user. If the transfer has not completed, do not send the save again or shut down the source. If Nintendo has already confirmed completion, inspect the game’s save-selection screen and verify that you are using the transferred profile.

The original Switch stopped booting first
Cloud backups that completed earlier can still be downloaded on another console with the same linked account and an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. A non-cloud save cannot be copied through the documented transfer process if the source console cannot complete the send operation; contact Nintendo or the repair provider before authorizing a reset, because resetting can remove the remaining local data.

You are sending the console for repair but keeping the second Switch
Use cloud backup for supported titles and an individual transfer for every non-cloud title. A full system transfer is unnecessary unless the second console is replacing the original as your primary system.
After the repaired console returns
Do not immediately overwrite the repaired system with an old copy. First check whether the repair preserved the local saves. If the saves are present and current, continue using them. If a save is missing, restore the cloud copy for supported games or transfer the verified save back from the second Switch for non-cloud games. Compare the in-game progress before deleting any duplicate or older data.
If the repair center reset the console, recreate the appropriate local user and link the same Nintendo Account before attempting a cloud download. For a save held on another Switch, use the same nearby transfer workflow in the opposite direction, selecting the repaired console as the receiver.

The Bottom Line
Before repair, cloud-back up every supported game and move each non-cloud save to another working Switch. Because an individual transfer deletes the source save, launch and verify every game on the destination before the original console leaves your possession.
