To protect WhatsApp chats, create a fresh backup before changing phones: WhatsApp uses iCloud on iPhone and a Google Account on Android. Restore is offered during WhatsApp setup, not from the Chat Backup screen. If you are switching between iPhone and Android and still have the old phone, use WhatsApp’s supported chat-transfer process instead. A backup only restores chats captured at the time it was made, so check its date before proceeding.
Choose the right way to move your chats
| Situation | Recommended route |
|---|---|
| New phone uses the same platform, and a suitable cloud backup exists | Restore the iCloud backup on iPhone or Google Account backup on Android during WhatsApp setup. |
| Changing between iPhone and Android, with the old phone available | Use WhatsApp’s supported chat-transfer feature and follow its current instructions for your direction of transfer. |
| Old phone still works but the backup is old | Make a fresh backup on the old phone before setting up WhatsApp on the new one. |
| No backup and old phone is unavailable | WhatsApp says it cannot restore chat history from its servers. An exported chat file is not an importable backup. |
Before you back up or restore
- Check the backup date and size. On the existing phone, open WhatsApp’s Settings > Chats > Chat Backup and review the last backup shown. Messages sent or received after that snapshot will not be included in a restore.
- Keep the same identity. Restore with the WhatsApp phone number that created the backup and the same cloud account: Apple Account/iCloud on iPhone or Google Account on Android.
- Make room. On iPhone, WhatsApp says available space in both iCloud and the phone should be at least 2.05 times the backup size. On Android, ensure sufficient space in both the Google Account and device.
- Use a stable connection and power. A backup or restore can take time; WhatsApp recommends a stable internet connection and power for long backups. Android users may prefer Wi-Fi to avoid mobile data charges.
- Save encrypted-backup credentials. If end-to-end encrypted backups are enabled, retain the password or 64-digit encryption key. Without the correct credential, the backup cannot be decrypted.
Back up WhatsApp chats on iPhone to iCloud
- Open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Chats > Chat Backup. Depending on the app version, Settings may be accessed through your profile photo.
- Choose an Auto Backup frequency, or tap Back Up Now to create a current backup before changing phones.
- Decide whether to include videos. Videos can be restored only if they were included in the backup you are restoring.
- Wait for the backup to finish, then check the displayed time and size before moving on.
WhatsApp ties the iCloud backup to the phone number and iCloud account used to create it. WhatsApp also describes backing up the iPhone device through iCloud as a separate route; using both consumes additional iCloud storage. Its help guidance says enabling WhatsApp’s encrypted in-app backup prevents using the iPhone backup option described there. Exact wording and availability can vary by app and locale.
Back up WhatsApp chats on Android to a Google Account
- Open WhatsApp, tap More options > Settings > Chats > Chat Backup.
- Choose a Google Account backup frequency and select the Google Account to use.
- Choose whether to include videos, then start the backup. Keep the phone connected to a stable network; Wi-Fi and power are sensible for a large first backup.
- Confirm the backup date in Chat Backup before setting up the replacement phone.
Before starting, check that a Google Account is active on the phone, Google Play Services is installed, and both the phone and Google Account have enough free space. WhatsApp says Android backups are associated with both the WhatsApp number and Google Account. It also warns that a Google Account backup not updated for five months might be automatically deleted by Google. A new backup to the same account overwrites the previous one.
Restore a backup on a new iPhone
- On the old iPhone, if it is available, verify the backup time and size at WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat Backup.
- On the new iPhone, install WhatsApp, or uninstall and reinstall it if it has already been activated.
- Verify the same WhatsApp phone number and use the same Apple Account/iCloud account associated with the backup.
- When WhatsApp offers Restore Chat History, choose it and allow the restore to finish.
Make sure iCloud Drive is enabled, including access for WhatsApp, and that the device and iCloud have enough free space. The restore will not include chats newer than the backup snapshot; videos return only if they were included in that backup.

Restore a backup on a new Android phone
- Use the same Google Account that holds the backup and install WhatsApp on the new Android phone.
- Verify the same WhatsApp phone number used to create the backup.
- Accept Restore when WhatsApp offers it during initial setup, then let the process complete.
WhatsApp presents restore during setup; the Chat Backup screen contains backup controls rather than a restore button. If WhatsApp has already been activated on the new phone, WhatsApp’s troubleshooting guidance recommends uninstalling and reinstalling it to bring back the setup restore prompt. Confirm the correct Google Account, phone number, network, and available storage if no backup is found.
Transfer chats when switching between iPhone and Android
If the old phone is available, direct transfer may be more appropriate than restoring a cloud backup. WhatsApp supports transfers in both directions, but the detailed steps below are specifically for iPhone to Android; consult WhatsApp’s current guidance for Android-to-iPhone instructions.

iPhone to Android requirements
- The destination Android phone runs Android 6 or later.
- Both phones use the same WhatsApp phone number, and WhatsApp is up to date on both.
- You have stable Wi-Fi and keep the old iPhone’s WhatsApp data until the transfer completes.
Transfer from iPhone to Android
- On the iPhone, open WhatsApp and go to Chats > Transfer Chat History > Transfer to Android.
- Set up WhatsApp on the Android phone and verify the same number.
- Connect the phones when prompted, then scan the displayed QR code using the old iPhone.
- Keep the iPhone unlocked while the transfer runs. Timing depends on how much data is being moved.
Do not activate WhatsApp on the destination Android before beginning; if you have already activated it, uninstall it first to restart setup. New chats already created on the destination do not merge with the old phone’s chats. WhatsApp says this local Wi-Fi transfer does not send the transfer data to cloud storage. Display name, status updates, and media received through Channels are among the items excluded.

- No backup appears: Check that you used the original WhatsApp number and the same Apple Account/iCloud or Google Account. On iPhone, verify iCloud Drive is enabled generally and for WhatsApp.
- Backup or restore stalls: Check the internet connection, phone and cloud storage, and that the phone has power. Make sure WhatsApp and the operating system are current.
- Encrypted backup will not restore: Confirm the password or 64-digit key. WhatsApp cannot decrypt it without the correct credential.
- Older backup is needed: Do not assume an earlier cloud version is recoverable. WhatsApp says a new iCloud backup replaces the prior WhatsApp backup, and Google Account backups are also overwritten.
- Backup is corrupted: WhatsApp says it cannot restore a corrupted backup. Incomplete backups can result from interrupted connectivity, insufficient space, or other interruptions.
WhatsApp’s troubleshooting guidance says chat history is not stored on its servers, so the company cannot restore chats on a user’s behalf. Exporting a chat is not a substitute: an export produces a text file, not a backup that can be imported into WhatsApp.
