Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is not released yet. As of October 19, 2026, the dated PlayStation storefront lists February 12, 2027, while an older sentence on the official Tomb Raider page still says 2026. Until the released build creates save data, there is no authoritative Windows save path, filename, or confirmed Steam Cloud setting to follow.
This guide gives you a safe procedure to use after launch, explains the one useful pre-release clue for Steam Deck and Linux, and shows how to protect a current save before restoring an older one. It does not invent a folder path that has not been published.
What is the current release and save-file status?
The game is planned for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC through Steam. The official Amazon Games FAQ describes it as a partnership between Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog. The PlayStation listing identifies it as a one-player, offline-playable PS5 title.

The only dated release information currently available is February 12, 2027 on the PlayStation storefront. Treat the older 2026 wording on the official Tomb Raider page as stale rather than as a second release date.

The Proton prefix is a starting point, not a complete save location. The eventual build may put saves in a subfolder that is not known yet, and a different app ID could be used. Do not create a folder, rename a file, or publish a path based only on the generic prefix.
Why you cannot back up a Legacy of Atlantis save today
A backup is a copy of data that the game has already written. With no released build, there is no verified save directory to copy and no supported filename to identify. A random directory inside a Steam library is not a valid substitute: copying it could preserve shader caches, configuration files, or Proton data while missing the actual save.
After release, make one intentional test save. That gives you a known time at which new files should appear and lets you identify the correct directory without guessing. Until then, the practical task is to prepare a repeatable backup routine rather than to download or modify alleged save files.
How to back up the PC save after release
1. Create a known save
- Install and start the released PC build.
- Play far enough to create a manual or automatic save slot.
- Note the approximate time and, if the game displays it, the slot name or chapter. This makes the first file search much easier.
2. Close the game completely
Exit through the game menu, then wait for the process to disappear before copying anything. A save that is still being written can be incomplete even if the folder is visible. If Steam still shows the game as running, wait until that status clears.

3. Locate the folder from released documentation
Use the released game’s support documentation or a technical reference that has been verified against the same build. Look for a path that identifies the game, its publisher, or a documented save-file directory. On Windows, do not assume that a folder under Documents, Saved Games, AppData, or the Steam installation is correct merely because its name looks plausible.
If no documentation exists, create a second test save, close the game, and search for files whose modified time matches that save. Confirm the result by renaming the suspected folder only after making a safety copy, then launch the game to see whether the test slot disappears and returns when the folder is restored. This verification prevents you from backing up an unrelated configuration directory.
4. Copy the complete save directory
- Copy the entire discovered save folder, including every file and subfolder.
- Preserve the original names and directory structure. Do not copy only the file that appears to represent one slot unless documentation explicitly says that slots are independent files.
- Place the copy outside the game directory, such as a separate internal drive, an external drive, or a protected backup folder.
Use a dated folder name such as Legacy-of-Atlantis-save-2027-02-20. The date should describe when the copy was made, not the date of the game release. Keep several generations so that a newly corrupted save does not replace the only usable copy.
5. Check that the copy is usable
Compare the backup’s file count and total size with the original. A copy that contains zero-byte files, a visibly incomplete subfolder, or an interruption message is not a reliable backup. For an additional integrity record, Windows users can run PowerShell’s Get-FileHash on individual files, while Linux users can use sha256sum. Hashes do not prove that the game will accept a save, but they can show whether a file changed between two backup locations.

Where are Legacy of Atlantis saves stored on Steam Deck or Linux?
PCGamingWiki currently shows only this generic Proton prefix for Steam Play/Linux:
<SteamLibrary-folder>/steamapps/compatdata/3558670/pfx/
The page explicitly cautions that the app ID may differ, and it does not identify the final save subfolder or filename. Therefore, use the prefix as a place to begin looking after the released game has created a save, not as a complete answer to “Where is the save folder on PC?”
Finding and copying the folder on a Steam Deck
- Switch to Desktop Mode and open the file manager.
- Enable viewing of hidden files if necessary; Proton data is commonly inside hidden directories.
- Open the Steam library that contains the game, then enter
steamapps/compatdataand locate the app-ID directory used by the installed build. If the number is not the one shown above, use the directory created for the actual installation. - Enter that directory’s
pfxtree and locate the documented save subfolder once post-release documentation identifies it. Do not assume that the first folder you see underpfxis the save directory. - With the game closed, copy the complete save folder to a location outside the Proton prefix. An external drive or a normal user folder is safer than leaving the only backup inside a directory that Steam or Proton could replace.
Steam libraries can be on internal storage or a microSD card, so the visible library location may differ between Decks. The final folder name and file format also remain unconfirmed until a shipping build is available.

1. Stop all save and synchronization activity
Exit the game and wait until it is no longer running. If Steam displays a cloud-conflict prompt, do not click through it automatically. First preserve the local files and identify which copy has the intended date and progress.

2. Preserve the current folder
Before replacing anything, rename the current save directory to a clearly dated safety copy, for example Legacy-of-Atlantis-save-before-restore-2027-03-01. Renaming rather than deleting gives you a way back if the older backup is damaged or belongs to a different build.
3. Put the backup in the exact original location
- Open the verified save directory used by the installed build.
- Copy the backed-up folder into that location, retaining its original subfolders and filenames.
- Do not merge files selectively unless the game’s documentation says that individual slots are supported. A partial merge can leave metadata and slot data out of sync.
4. Launch and verify
Start the game and check the expected slot, chapter, inventory, or other visible progress. If the title shows the old progress, exit normally before making another backup. If it shows no saves or reports an error, close it and restore the safety copy rather than repeatedly launching and allowing a new empty profile to overwrite files.

No Steam Cloud support is confirmed for this game at present, so its eventual behavior cannot be promised. If a released build does present a conflict, treat the dialog as a choice between two copies, not as a routine confirmation.

- Keep the local backup and the pre-restore folder untouched.
- Read the dates and sizes shown by Steam, if available.
- Choose the copy that matches the progress you intend to keep.
- After synchronization, launch the game and verify the slot before deleting any other copy.
If the dialog is unclear, cancel the operation and make another dated copy of both local versions. A cloud service can synchronize an unwanted empty or older profile just as easily as a good save.

Console backup and restoration
PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2 do not expose their game saves as ordinary Windows folders that you can drag to a USB directory. Use the backup, cloud, or data-management controls provided by the relevant console account and system software when the game is released. The fact that the PS5 listing describes offline play does not establish whether a particular save-sync service is enabled.
Do not attempt to transplant a PC folder into a console installation. No cross-platform save compatibility is documented, and the same game name does not guarantee that file formats, account ownership, or slot metadata match between platforms.
Troubleshooting: save folder and restore problems
The search finds no save folder
- Confirm that you launched the released build and created a save rather than only changing a setting.
- Close the game fully before searching; open files may not have their final timestamp.
- Check the game’s own support instructions for the exact build and operating system.
- On Steam Deck, verify that you are examining the library where the game is installed, including a possible microSD library.
- Do not treat the generic Proton prefix as proof that the data is directly inside that directory; the actual subfolder is still unknown.
The restored slot does not appear
- Compare the backup’s directory structure with the original and ensure that you did not copy an extra parent folder.
- Check that the backup belongs to the same game edition and build. Portability across operating systems or builds has not been documented.
- Look for a cloud-conflict result that replaced the restored files with another version.
- Close the game, move the failed restore aside, and put back the pre-restore safety copy.
The game reports corrupted data
Restore the pre-restore folder first, then test an earlier dated generation. If one generation consistently fails while another loads, retain the failing copy for diagnosis but do not use it as your only backup. Never “repair” a save by editing unknown bytes or renaming extensions; without an official format specification, that can destroy recoverable data.
The folder keeps changing after you restore it
Another running game process, launcher service, or synchronization service may be writing a newer version. Close the game and launcher, make a fresh copy of the restored folder, and resolve any cloud prompt before launching again. Keep the original backup offline while testing so an unwanted replacement cannot alter it.
A backup routine that remains recoverable
- Make the first backup immediately after the released build creates a verified save.
- Keep multiple dated generations instead of overwriting one archive.
- Store at least one generation outside the Steam library or Proton prefix.
- Copy the whole save directory, not a guessed individual file.
- Before every restore, rename the current directory as a dated safety copy.
- Verify an actual in-game slot after restoring.
- Do not assume Steam Cloud, cross-platform transfer, or a stable app ID until official documentation confirms it.
This approach works even if the final path changes between Windows and Steam Deck: the location is discovered from the shipping build, the complete directory is preserved, and every replacement can be reversed.
