Back up before you install anything. Exit The Sims 2, copy either the complete user folder under DocumentsEA Games or the specific neighborhood folder you want to protect, and store that copy outside the live game folder—ideally on another drive. To restore, close the game, move the damaged neighborhood folder out of the active Neighborhoods directory, and copy the intact backup folder back in its place. Never merge a backup into a damaged neighborhood folder.
For safer experimentation, work from a clone or a separate copy of your user folder. Keep the original untouched, test one mod set at a time, and record every change so a bad result has a known rollback point.
Understand what you are backing up
The Sims 2 stores neighborhoods as folders, not as one ordinary save-file document. The folders are inside the user game’s Neighborhoods directory, which is beneath a Sims 2 folder in DocumentsEA Games. The exact parent-folder name depends on the edition and installation, so an Ultimate Collection installation may not use the same visible name as a disc installation.

Common neighborhood identifiers are:
| Folder | Premade neighborhood |
|---|---|
N001 |
Pleasantview |
N002 |
Strangetown |
N003 |
Veronaville |
G001 |
Riverblossom Hills |
These identifiers are the restore targets. If you are protecting Pleasantview, for example, the folder to find is normally N001, regardless of the neighborhood’s display name in the game. Custom neighborhoods use their own folder identifiers, so confirm the folder by opening the game or by checking the contents before you copy anything.

There are two different locations to distinguish:
- User data: the active Sims 2 folder under
DocumentsEA Games. This is where your played neighborhoods and other personal files live. - Installed factory data: the game’s installation directory, in a path ending with
TSDataResUserDataNeighborhoods. This contains clean premade neighborhoods supplied with the game. Disc and Ultimate Collection installations use different roots, but the ending path is the same.
Before replacing files, verify which user folder the game is actually using. Cloud-sync software can leave more than one Documents location, and copying the right folder to the wrong location will appear to do nothing.
Choose the right backup scope
A complete user-folder backup is the safest choice when you are unsure what a mod might affect. A neighborhood-only backup is faster and smaller when you are testing changes in one neighborhood.
| Backup type | Recovery scope | Storage and speed | Finding the restore target | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Complete Sims 2 user folder | All neighborhoods and the other user files present in that folder | Larger copy and longer transfer, depending on Downloads and other content | Restore the complete folder, or retrieve a specific neighborhood from it | Major mod experiments, troubleshooting, or a broad rollback |
| One neighborhood folder | Only the selected neighborhood, such as N001 |
Small and quick to duplicate | Very clear: replace the folder with the same identifier | Protecting one established neighborhood before a focused test |
For either method, keep the copy outside the active EA Games folder. A dated name such as Sims2_N001_before_mod_2026-10-19 tells you exactly what it is and when it was made. A USB flash drive or external hard drive gives you a second physical location if the computer’s internal storage is damaged.

Make a complete user-folder backup
Use this procedure when you want the widest recovery option or when the mod may touch more than one neighborhood.
- Exit the game completely. Close The Sims 2 and wait until it is no longer running. Do not copy files while the game is saving or while a neighborhood is open.
- Locate the active user folder. Open
DocumentsEA Gamesand identify the Sims 2 folder that contains your currentNeighborhoodsdirectory. If more than one candidate exists, check modification dates and the neighborhood folders you recognize. An Ultimate Collection folder may have a different name from a disc-installation folder. - Copy, do not move, the entire folder. Select the complete Sims 2 user folder, choose Copy, and paste it into a backup location outside
DocumentsEA Games. Keep the original in place so the game can continue to use it. - Give the backup a descriptive name. Include the neighborhood or purpose and the date, for example
Sims2_full_before_mod_2026-10-19. Do not leave several folders named simply “Sims 2” because you may restore the wrong snapshot later. - Wait for the copy to finish. Check that the destination contains the expected
Neighborhoodsfolder and the neighborhood identifiers you intend to protect. If you copied to removable media, safely eject it only after the operating system reports that the transfer is complete.
When troubleshooting a damaged user folder, published EA forum guidance describes moving the existing folder away so the game can generate a clean Sims 2 folder, then transferring saved-game contents back when you are ready. Treat that generated folder as a new working location; retain the old folder until you have verified every neighborhood you need.

Back up one neighborhood
A focused copy is appropriate when, for example, you want to test a mod in Pleasantview without changing your other neighborhoods.
- Close The Sims 2 completely.
- Open the active user folder under
DocumentsEA Games, then openNeighborhoods. - Identify the target folder by its code. Pleasantview is normally
N001, StrangetownN002, VeronavilleN003, and Riverblossom HillsG001. - Copy that entire folder—including all of its files and subfolders—to a location outside the live EA Games folder.
- Rename the copied folder or its containing backup directory with a date and purpose, such as
Sims2_N001_before_mod_2026-10-19. - Open the copied folder and confirm that it is not empty before beginning the mod test. Leave the original folder in the active
Neighborhoodsdirectory.
Copy the whole neighborhood folder rather than selected files. The neighborhood’s relationships, lots, characters, and other state are represented across multiple files; a partial copy is not a dependable snapshot.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse a clone for mod testing
A backup lets you return to an earlier state. A clone lets you experiment while preserving the original state in a separate working copy. Pleasant Sims documents copying a premade neighborhood from the installed game’s TSDataResUserDataNeighborhoods directory and keeping another copy available for play.
For a practical, low-risk setup:
- Make a complete user-folder backup first, so you can recover your normal game if anything goes wrong.
- Preserve the original neighborhood folder in an archive outside the active game folder.
- Prepare a separate working user folder or another clearly identified test copy for the mod experiment. Keep the untouched original out of that test location.
- If you need a factory-fresh premade neighborhood instead of your current progress, copy the matching folder from the installed game’s
TSDataResUserDataNeighborhoodsdirectory. - Do not place two folders with the same neighborhood identifier in one active
Neighborhoodsdirectory. Keep alternate copies in separate backup or test locations and replace the active folder only when you deliberately switch states.
A clone preserves your current progress for experimentation. A factory copy is different: it returns a premade neighborhood to the content shipped by Maxis and discards the played state in the folder you replace.
Install and test mods in controlled batches
After the backup is complete, reduce the number of variables in each test. Install one mod or one clearly defined mod set at a time, launch the game, and record what changed. Note the date, the files added or removed, the neighborhood tested, and any symptoms such as a failed load, missing objects, or altered behavior.

- Test in the clone or separate working copy, not in the only copy of an established neighborhood.
- Keep the backup outside the live folder so the game cannot overwrite it during a save.
- Close the game before adding, removing, or replacing neighborhood folders.
- If a test fails, remove the new mod files from the test setup and restore the known-good neighborhood before trying a different combination.
- Do not assume that a successful launch proves a mod is safe; play the affected lots and interactions you intended to test.
No reliable published statistic establishes a backup “success rate” for Sims 2 neighborhoods, and the available procedural guidance is not a controlled benchmark. The value of this workflow is that it gives you a known copy to restore, not a guarantee that every mod combination will behave correctly.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Restore a neighborhood after a bad mod
Use the following replacement procedure for a corrupted or unwanted neighborhood state.
- Close The Sims 2. Make sure no save operation is in progress.
- Open the active user folder. Confirm the actual folder the game uses under
DocumentsEA Games, then open itsNeighborhoodsdirectory. - Protect the current damaged folder. Find the folder with the same identifier as your backup, such as
N001, and move it out of the liveNeighborhoodsdirectory to a temporary holding location. Do not delete it immediately; keeping it gives you one more recovery option if you selected the wrong backup. - Remove any conflicting folder name. The live directory must not contain the damaged folder under the identifier you are restoring. A backup should replace that folder, not sit beside it with files mixed together.
- Copy the intact backup folder into
Neighborhoods. Copy the complete folder from your dated backup location. Preserve its original identifier, such asN001. - Start the game and verify the neighborhood before reinstalling mods. Check that the neighborhood appears, loads, and contains the expected households and lots. Save only after you have confirmed that you restored the intended snapshot.
- Add changes back gradually. Reintroduce mods one set at a time, using your notes to identify the change that caused the problem.
Do not paste backup files into an existing damaged folder. Merging can leave modified files that are absent from the backup, so the result is neither the clean snapshot nor the known damaged state. Replacing the entire neighborhood folder is the safer operation.
Reset a premade neighborhood to factory content
If your goal is not to preserve current progress but to return a premade neighborhood to its shipped state, use the installed-game copy. Close the game, move the user neighborhood folder out of the active Neighborhoods directory, and copy the matching folder from the installation path ending in TSDataResUserDataNeighborhoods.
Disc installations and the Ultimate Collection use different installation roots, so do not assume a drive letter or top-level folder from another edition. Search within the installation for the complete ending path. Copy the folder whose identifier matches the neighborhood you are resetting: for example, the factory N001 folder for Pleasantview.

Keep the removed user folder until the factory copy has loaded successfully. If you later decide that the reset was too aggressive, you can restore your dated user backup instead.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the game generated a new Sims 2 folder
During troubleshooting, the game may create a fresh user folder. That new folder is useful because it separates newly generated files from the old, possibly damaged set.
- Exit the game after confirming that the new folder was created.
- Open the new Sims 2 user folder and locate its
Neighborhoodsdirectory. - Copy the required neighborhood folder from your intact backup into that directory. Copy the whole folder, not individual files.
- Start the game and verify the neighborhood.
- Only after the neighborhood is working should you transfer additional user content, and add it in controlled groups so a problematic file can be identified.
This transfer method follows the same replacement rule: the destination should receive a complete, intact neighborhood folder rather than a mixture of old and new files.
Troubleshoot path and restore mistakes
The restored neighborhood does not appear
Check that you copied the folder into the active user folder’s Neighborhoods directory, not into the installed game’s TSDataResUserDataNeighborhoods directory. Also verify that the folder identifier is correct and that you are not looking at a second Documents folder created by cloud synchronization.
The old damaged behavior remains
Make sure the old folder was moved completely out of the live directory before you copied the backup. If files from the damaged folder remain beside the restored copy, repeat the operation with a clean folder replacement rather than deleting individual files.

You restored the wrong date
Stop saving in the current game, close it, and inspect the dated backup names outside the live folder. Restore the snapshot that matches the point you want. Keeping the displaced folder temporarily gives you a fallback if you discover that the selected backup is not the one you intended.
A factory reset removed your progress
The installed-game folder is a factory source, not a backup of your played neighborhood. Move the factory folder out of the way and restore your dated user backup instead, following the complete replacement procedure.
The game was already running during the copy
Close the game and repeat the backup after the last confirmed save. A copy made while files are changing may not represent one consistent neighborhood state.
A repeatable pre-mod checklist
- The Sims 2 is closed.
- You verified the active user folder under
DocumentsEA Games. - You identified the correct neighborhood identifier, such as
N001,N002,N003, orG001. - You copied the complete user folder or complete neighborhood folder.
- The backup is outside the live EA Games folder and preferably on another device.
- The backup name includes its purpose and date.
- You can open the backup location and see the expected folder before installing a mod.
- You are testing in a clone or separate working copy when preserving an established neighborhood matters.
- You are adding one mod set at a time and recording each change.
With those checks complete, a failed experiment becomes a folder replacement rather than a permanent loss of your neighborhood’s progress.
