Make a local copy of your save immediately before the final irreversible choice. On Windows, close the game, copy the entire %LOCALAPPDATA%TenebrisSomniaSavedSaveGames folder to a dated location, and keep that copy untouched while you view the first ending. To try the other documented ending, close the game, replace the active folder with your backup, then relaunch.
This method is more dependable than assuming Steam Cloud will preserve the exact pre-choice state. Steam lists cloud saves for Tenebris Somnia, but the available documentation does not explain its synchronization timing or conflict behavior. A separate local copy gives you a known restore point.
What you can safely rely on
Tenebris Somnia is a single-player 2D retro survival-horror adventure from Andrés Borghi and Saibot Studios, published by New Blood Interactive. The Steam listing gives October 16, 2026 as the release date and includes Steam Cloud among the features. A launch-preparation guide, however, did not establish the game’s autosave timing, manual-save rules, checkpoint placement, number of save slots, or cloud-synchronization behavior. Those details should not be guessed from how another game works.

When to create the backup
Stop at the last irreversible decision
Play normally until the game places you immediately before the final ending choice. Do not make the backup after selecting an option, watching the ending, or returning to a post-ending screen. If the game has more than one save mechanism, the exact point at which a slot or autosave changes is not publicly documented, so the safest timing is the last playable moment before the branch.
Close the game before copying
Exit to the desktop and fully close Tenebris Somnia. Copying while the game is running could capture a file during a write operation. Wait until the game process and launcher activity have ended before opening the save directory.
Windows: back up the complete save folder
- Reach the pre-ending state. Stop immediately before the final choice and note any in-game location or prompt that will help you recognize the state later.
- Quit completely. Use the game’s exit command, return to the desktop, and confirm that Tenebris Somnia is no longer running.
- Open the save location. In File Explorer, click the address bar, paste
%LOCALAPPDATA%TenebrisSomniaSavedSaveGames, and press Enter. The%LOCALAPPDATA%variable expands to your Windows user profile’s local application-data directory, even when that directory is hidden in normal browsing. - Copy the whole folder. Select
SaveGames, choose Copy, and paste it to a separate location. A second internal drive, external drive, or another folder outside the Tenebris Somnia directory is preferable to a second copy beside the original. - Use an unambiguous name. Include the game, purpose, and date, for example
TenebrisSomnia-before-ending-2026-10-19. If you make more than one checkpoint, add a time or sequence number. - Keep both copies. Leave the original
SaveGamesfolder where the game created it and retain the copied folder separately. Do not move the only copy, and do not let a later backup overwrite this pre-choice version. - Optional verification. Open the copied folder and confirm that it contains the same files and subfolders as the original. Compare the folder’s item count and approximate size, and check that the newest file timestamps match the moment you closed the game. This is a sanity check, not a developer-published checksum procedure.
- Play the first branch. Relaunch the game and make one ending choice. Keep the dated backup untouched while you view the result.
The documented Windows location is the folder above. If it does not open, paste the path exactly into File Explorer’s address bar rather than trying to browse through hidden directories manually.

Windows: restore the pre-choice state
- Close Tenebris Somnia. A restore should never be performed while the game may still be writing saves.
- Open the parent directory. Navigate to
%LOCALAPPDATA%TenebrisSomniaSaved. You should see the activeSaveGamesfolder. - Preserve the post-ending files. Rename the current folder to something such as
SaveGames-after-ending, or move it outside the parent directory. Renaming is safer than deleting because it lets you return to the post-ending state if needed. - Copy the backup back. Copy your dated backup folder into the parent directory and rename it to exactly
SaveGamesif its name differs. The final path must again be%LOCALAPPDATA%TenebrisSomniaSavedSaveGames. - Launch and check. Start the game and confirm that the menu or loaded scene represents the moment before the final choice. Do this before selecting the alternate option.
- Make the other choice. Once the pre-choice state is confirmed, proceed through the branch. Keep both the original dated backup and the renamed post-ending folder until you are satisfied that the restore worked.
This copy-and-replace sequence is a conservative file-management method based on the published folder path. No developer-authored restore utility or checksum process has been documented, so there is no official repair command to substitute for a clean folder replacement.
Steam Cloud: useful convenience, not your only safety net
Steam’s store page lists Steam Cloud for Tenebris Somnia, but the available save-system documentation does not confirm when synchronization occurs, whether every save file is uploaded, how conflicts are resolved, or whether a newly recorded ending immediately replaces an older cloud state. Cloud status therefore should not be treated as proof that the pre-ending branch is recoverable.
- Make the local copy even when Steam Cloud is enabled.
- Do not delete the local backup after seeing the first ending.
- If Steam shows a synchronization conflict, preserve your dated local folder before choosing either cloud or local data.
- When testing a restore, verify the loaded in-game state rather than assuming that a successful sync message means the correct branch was restored.
Steam Cloud can still be convenient for moving between computers, but it is not a substitute for a manually preserved pre-choice folder when the exact branch matters.

Playing the Windows build through Proton or Steam Play
For a Windows build running under Proton, PCGamingWiki places the game’s data inside the Steam library’s steamapps/compatdata/2121510 prefix. The library may be installed on a different drive, and the app ID can differ in some installations, so do not assume that one absolute Linux path applies to every system.
- Identify the Steam library that contains the Tenebris Somnia installation.
- Open its
steamapps/compatdatadirectory and locate the prefix corresponding to the installed game. The commonly listed prefix is2121510; verify it against your installation if another number appears. - Within that prefix, locate the Windows-style relative path ending in
AppData/Local/TenebrisSomnia/Saved/SaveGames. Use the file manager’s search function if the prefix contains several user profiles. - Close the game, copy the complete
SaveGamesfolder to a dated location outside the prefix, and retain the original. - For a restore, rename or move the current folder, copy the dated folder back into the same relative location, and confirm the pre-choice state in game.
Proton prefixes can be recreated or relocated when a game is moved between libraries. Keeping the backup outside compatdata protects it from that kind of change. If Steam uses a different app ID for your build, match the prefix to the installed title rather than copying into the example number blindly.
Console players: what is known and what is not
The publisher lists PC storefronts as well as PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series releases. The available documentation does not provide console filesystem paths or a developer-published console restore procedure. The Windows path cannot be used on any of those consoles.

Use the platform’s own saved-data tools
- PlayStation 5: Use the console’s saved-data management and backup options, following the current system prompts for local or USB/cloud copies.
- Nintendo Switch 2: Use the system’s data-management and supported save-backup features. Menu names and availability can depend on the account and subscription configuration.
- Xbox Series: Use the console’s saved-data and cloud-synchronization controls. Avoid deleting local data until you know which copy is current.
Because platform menus and policies can change, verify the current instructions in the console maker’s support documentation. Before the final choice, create the strongest platform-supported backup available and record the date. If a console offers no user-accessible way to preserve a pre-choice state, the reliable alternative is to finish one ending and replay the branch.

Troubleshooting
The Windows folder appears to be missing
Paste the complete path into File Explorer’s address bar, including the percent signs and backslashes. Confirm that you are signed into the Windows account that played the game. If the folder still does not exist, launch the game, reach a point where it writes progress, exit normally, and check again. Do not create an empty replacement folder and assume it is a valid save.

Close the game and inspect the parent directory. Ensure that the restored folder is named exactly SaveGames and is located directly under TenebrisSomniaSaved, not nested inside another folder such as SaveGamesTenebrisSomnia-before-ending-2026-10-19. Confirm that you copied the dated folder made before the choice, not the folder renamed from the post-ending session.

The backup is empty or has a newer timestamp than expected
Do not overwrite it. Return to the original folder or your renamed post-ending folder and identify the copy created while the game was closed at the pre-choice point. If no valid copy exists, the local backup cannot be reconstructed from an empty directory; use any platform-supported backup or replay the route to the branch.
Steam reports a cloud conflict
Keep the dated local folder outside the game directory first. Then compare the timestamps and contents of the local and cloud-supplied folders without deleting either one. Select the copy that represents the pre-choice state only after you have preserved the other data. Relaunch and verify the loaded scene; a conflict dialog by itself does not establish which ending branch is present.
The Proton restore does not appear
Check that you restored the folder inside the prefix belonging to the active Steam library and the correct app ID. A game moved to another library can use a different compatdata prefix. Search for the relative path ending in AppData/Local/TenebrisSomnia/Saved/SaveGames, restore there, and make sure the game is not running while files are replaced.

After viewing the first ending, leave the pre-choice backup untouched and keep the post-ending folder under a separate name. Restore the pre-choice copy for the alternate ending. If you later want to return to the first ending, close the game and swap the folders again, always retaining a separately named copy of each state.
What is not officially established
Do not rely on an assumed autosave interval, a particular number of save slots, a specific checkpoint frequency, or a guaranteed cloud-upload sequence. Those details were not confirmed in the available save-system reporting. The documented facts are narrower: the Windows save directory is known, Steam advertises cloud-save support, and a pre-decision save can be used to reach the other documented ending without replaying the entire game. Treat any future official patch notes or developer instructions as the authority if they add more precise behavior.
