LiveKit documents APIs for listing and creating SIP trunk records, but the documentation cited here does not describe a one-command backup or restore feature. You can build a repeatable recovery process by exporting inbound and outbound trunk data, storing it as versioned JSON, and recreating the records with the corresponding create operations. This covers LiveKit trunk objects—not necessarily provider settings, phone-number associations, or credentials.

What this backup covers—and what it does not

LiveKit’s SIP APIs manage SIP trunks, dispatch rules, and SIP participants. For trunk recovery, the relevant documented operations include ListSIPInboundTrunk, ListSIPOutboundTrunk, and the corresponding trunk creation methods. Saving list responses and using them to recreate records is an operator-designed workflow, not a documented atomic snapshot or formal backup/restore facility.

A LiveKit trunk record is only one part of a working telephony connection. The SIP trunk setup guide describes configuring a trunk with an external provider, associating a phone number, and directing the connection to a LiveKit SIP endpoint. For Twilio, provider-side origination URI and outbound authentication settings are described separately in LiveKit’s Twilio integration guide. Keep recovery records for those external settings and number associations as well.

Do not assume an exported list contains usable passwords. LiveKit documents auth_username and auth_password fields, but the cited documentation does not establish whether list responses return password values or redact them. Check the response for the SDK/API version you use, and maintain secrets separately in an approved secret store.

  • Multi-Party Conferencing: Supports 3-way voice conferencing for enhanced communication capabilities
  • Reliable Failover Protection: Failover SIP server automatically switches to secondary server if main server loses connection

Before exporting trunks

  • Identify the exact LiveKit Cloud project and environment to protect. Record its identity alongside the export so it cannot be confused with another deployment.
  • Use an appropriately restricted token with the SIP admin permission required for the operations you will run. LiveKit’s SIP API uses signed access tokens; requests go to /twirp/livekit.SIP/<MethodName> as POST requests with JSON bodies.
  • Choose an access-controlled location for the JSON files and a separate secure store for credentials. Limit access to both according to your organization’s normal change-management and security practices.
  • Record provider-side configuration, number-to-trunk associations, and relevant trunk identifiers in the recovery plan. Do not rely on the LiveKit list output to capture external provider state.

If you use LiveKit Cloud, the LiveKit CLI documentation describes project references including project URL, API key, API secret, and name, as well as Cloud authentication and project linking. Verify the active project before making changes.

Export inbound and outbound trunk records

  1. Authenticate to the intended project. Use the LiveKit server SDK, CLI, or direct SIP API with the required SIP admin permission. Confirm the project and environment before issuing requests.
  2. List inbound trunks. Call ListSIPInboundTrunk and save the returned data without silently editing it. Inbound settings can include phone numbers, access or authentication restrictions, headers, timeouts, and media configuration.
  3. List outbound trunks. Call ListSIPOutboundTrunk and save that result separately. Outbound settings can include the provider address, destination country, caller ID numbers, transport, and optional credentials.
  4. Label and version the exports. Store the retrieval time, LiveKit project/environment identity, and the API or SDK version used with each export. Keep versions according to your retention and access-control policy.
  5. Handle secrets separately. Compare the returned fields with the configuration you expect, but do not treat absent or redacted passwords as recoverable. Preserve credentials through your secret-management process and maintain provider-side configuration and number associations in their appropriate systems.

Inbound and outbound trunks have different settings and use different list operations, so preserve them as distinct records rather than treating one list as a complete inventory.

  • Supports T.38 Fax for creating Fax-over-IP

Restore trunk records

  1. Confirm the destination project and environment. Authenticate with permissions suitable for creating SIP trunks and make sure the target is the intended LiveKit project.
  2. Review the saved records. Separate inbound from outbound data, identify values that need to be supplied from the secure secret store, and confirm that provider-side settings and number associations are ready.
  3. Recreate inbound trunks. Use the documented inbound trunk creation operation with the saved nonsecret settings and the correct secrets. Do not assume an old trunk identifier can or should be reused unless the applicable API behavior for your version establishes that.
  4. Recreate outbound trunks. Use CreateSIPOutboundTrunk with the saved outbound configuration, adding any required secret values from the secure store.
  5. Verify the resulting records. List the trunks again and compare the returned configuration with the intended settings. Check the deployment’s normal inbound and outbound call paths and confirm provider connectivity and number routing.

The cited documentation does not promise an atomic restore, rollback procedure, or particular validation test. Treat recreation as a controlled change: retain the original exports, record what was created, and follow your own rollback and incident procedures if verification fails.

Cloud trunks and self-hosted SIP configuration are different

The API workflow above applies to stored LiveKit Cloud SIP trunk records. LiveKit’s self-hosted SIP server documentation describes a separate YAML-based server configuration context. Do not assume listing Cloud trunk objects backs up self-hosted server configuration; protect deployment configuration and secrets through the infrastructure backup process for that environment.

API or dashboard: choosing an operating method

LiveKit documents both API/SDK/CLI management operations and dashboard setup for Cloud. The API route is suited to a repeatable export-and-recreate workflow because the same management operations can be used in scripts and change procedures. The dashboard is a documented setup route, but the sources cited here do not establish a built-in dashboard export/restore feature. Neither method, by itself, should be treated as a backup of provider-side configuration or secrets.
