On Windows with Steam, close Hellraiser: Revival, copy %LOCALAPPDATA%HellraiserSavedSaveGames to a dated folder or USB drive, and leave that original copy untouched. Install the update only after the copy is complete. If the patch damages or removes progress, exit the game, temporarily disable Steam Cloud for the title, restore the copied folder, launch once offline to verify the save, then turn cloud synchronization back on.
What this backup protects
A game update normally replaces program files, not your personal saves, but a patch can expose progression, loading, or save/reload bugs. Hellraiser: Revival’s Update 1.1 specifically addressed progression and save-related problems, including a flooded-room lever that could fail to appear after saving and reloading during the corpse puzzle. A separate local copy gives you a rollback point if an update leaves a save unusable.
Steam lists Steam Cloud as a feature for Hellraiser: Revival. Cloud synchronization is useful for continuity between machines, but it is not a substitute for an independently dated copy: if Steam uploads a damaged or empty local state, it can overwrite the version you hoped to restore. Keep the manual copy until the updated game has loaded a known-good save and successfully created a new save.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesConfirmed requirements and limits
- The Windows version requires Windows 10 64-bit, version 22H2 or later.
- Valve/Steam lists 80 GB of available storage for the Windows release (2026 listing). Leave enough additional space for your backup destination; the save folder itself is separate from the listed game-installation requirement.
- The reported Windows save location is
%LOCALAPPDATA%HellraiserSavedSaveGames. This path comes from community save-location documentation, not an official FAQ, so it may change with a future build. - Settings are reported separately at
%LOCALAPPDATA%HellraiserSavedConfigWindows. Do not replace the settings directory when your goal is to restore progress unless you deliberately want to roll back configuration as well. - The official FAQ lists releases for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and Steam. The official pages reviewed do not document console-specific save export or import menus.
Before updating, also note the startup warning added in Update 1.1: the game can tell you when your GPU driver is out of date and needs updating. If that notice appears, treat the driver update as a separate change and retain the save backup before making either change.

Windows/Steam: make the backup
Use this sequence every time you plan to install a patch or change the game installation. It avoids copying a file while the game is still writing it and keeps the rollback copy outside the installation directory.
- Finish your current session and exit completely. Save normally, quit to the desktop, and wait until Hellraiser: Revival is no longer running. Do not copy files while the game is saving or while a launcher process is still closing.
- Open the save folder. In File Explorer, click the address bar, paste
%LOCALAPPDATA%HellraiserSavedSaveGames, and press Enter. Environment-variable notation takes you to the correct user profile even when Windows is installed on a different drive. - Copy the entire folder. Select the complete
SaveGamesfolder, not just one file inside it. Use Copy, then paste it into a location outside the game directory, such as a dated folder in Documents or a USB flash drive. A 64 GB USB drive is a practical offline destination cited in the save-location guidance. - Give the copy an unambiguous name. Include the date and the game state, for example
Hellraiser-Revival-SaveGames-2026-10-19-before-update. Do not move, rename, or edit the original folder under%LOCALAPPDATA%; the game still needs that live location. - Wait for the copy to finish. Check that the destination contains the same folder hierarchy and files as the source. If Windows reports that a file is in use, cancel the copy, confirm the game has exited, and start again.
- Keep the backup separate. A second drive or USB stick protects the copy if the game installation, Windows profile, or main drive develops a problem. Do not store the only backup inside the folder that Steam updates.
How to verify the backup before installing the patch
A copy operation completing without an error does not prove that you can restore it. Perform these checks while the original save is still available:
- Open the dated destination and confirm that it contains a
SaveGamesfolder rather than an empty parent folder. - Compare the visible file and folder structure with the live source. The backup should represent the complete folder, not a shortcut or a partial selection.
- Record which save you expect to load after the update. A simple note such as the chapter, puzzle, or last checkpoint prevents you from mistaking an older slot for a failed restore.
- Leave the dated copy untouched. If you need several attempts, make a new working copy rather than modifying the preserved original.
You do not need to test the backup by overwriting your working save before the update. The important verification is that the folder was copied while the game was closed, exists at the separate destination, and remains available if a rollback is required.

Install the update without losing your rollback point
- Start the update through Steam after the dated copy is complete.
- Keep the backup until the updated game has loaded a known-good save and you have played long enough to create and load a fresh save successfully.
- If the game displays a GPU-driver warning at startup, note it and address the driver separately. Do not delete the backup merely because the game reaches the main menu.
- When testing the updated build, avoid overwriting every existing slot immediately. Loading first gives you a chance to identify whether progress, checkpoints, and reload behavior are intact.
Update 1.1’s fixes show why this check matters: a progression object could fail to spawn after a save-and-reload sequence. If a previously completed section now behaves as though it is incomplete, stop making new saves until you decide whether to restore the pre-update copy.
Restore a Windows save after a bad update
Use the restoration sequence only after the game is closed. The order matters because active cloud synchronization can replace a manually restored local folder.
- Exit the game. Close Hellraiser: Revival completely and wait for Steam and the game process to finish writing files.
- Temporarily disable Steam Cloud for Hellraiser: Revival. Use Steam’s per-game cloud setting, not a global change for every game. This prevents Steam from immediately uploading the damaged state or downloading it over your restored files.
- Preserve the current state before replacing it. Rename or copy the current
%LOCALAPPDATA%HellraiserSavedSaveGamesfolder if you may need to return to it. Keeping both versions makes it possible to investigate whether the update or a later save caused the problem. - Restore the dated copy. Replace the current
SaveGamesfolder with the untouched backup made before the update. Copy the folder itself into theSaveddirectory so the resulting path is again%LOCALAPPDATA%HellraiserSavedSaveGames. - Start once offline. Launch the game while Steam Cloud remains disabled or the computer is offline. Load the expected checkpoint and confirm that your progress, inventory, and previously completed objectives are present.
- Create and reload a test save. Play briefly, save, exit, and load that new save. This verifies that the restored files work with the updated build rather than merely appearing in the load list.
- Re-enable Steam Cloud only after local verification. Once the restored progress and a new save have loaded correctly, turn synchronization back on. If Steam asks which local or cloud data to keep, choose deliberately; do not accept a prompt without checking the timestamps and the state you just verified.
If the restored copy fails even with cloud disabled, close the game and keep both folders. The failure may indicate that the save itself was already damaged, that the copied folder was incomplete, or that the updated build is incompatible with that state. Do not repeatedly launch and save over the only preserved backup.

Manual copy versus Steam Cloud
| Backup method | Rollback control | Platform coverage in the documented procedure | Verification approach | Where it is stored |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Manual SaveGames copy |
You choose the exact dated version to restore | Windows/Steam | Restore with cloud disabled, then launch offline and test a new save | A separate folder or USB drive outside the game installation |
| Steam Cloud | Synchronization can replace a manually restored state if left active | Steam | Confirm the local restore before turning synchronization back on | Steam’s cloud service, with the local save still on the PC |
The manual copy provides the clearest rollback because its contents and date are under your control. Steam Cloud is convenient for continuity, but the restore procedure must temporarily stop synchronization so the cloud does not overwrite the files you are trying to test.

Hellraiser: Revival is listed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and Steam. The official FAQ and pages reviewed do not publish Hellraiser-specific export/import instructions for those consoles. Consequently, there is no verified console menu path to reproduce the Windows folder-copy procedure.
Before a console update, use the platform’s own saved-data or cloud-management screen to make a copy where the platform permits it, and verify that the copy is visible before installing the patch. Treat that as general platform guidance rather than a documented Hellraiser: Revival workflow. Do not assume that a console cloud copy is independent of synchronization conflicts; check which version the platform identifies as local and which it identifies as cloud data before restoring.

Troubleshooting common backup and restore failures
The save folder does not open
Paste the complete path, including the percent signs and the SavedSaveGames portion, into File Explorer’s address bar. If the folder is absent, close the game and confirm that you are using the same Windows account that runs Steam. Because the path is community-documented and version-sensitive, a future build could use a different location; do not invent a replacement folder or delete other data while searching.
Windows says a file is still in use
Cancel the copy, exit the game again, and wait for all game processes to close before retrying. Copying an actively written save can leave an incomplete backup that looks present but cannot be restored.

The game starts with an old or empty profile after restoration
Exit without saving, confirm that the restored folder is exactly under %LOCALAPPDATA%HellraiserSavedSaveGames, and check that Steam Cloud is still disabled. If cloud synchronization was active, it may have replaced the local files. Re-copy the preserved dated folder and test again offline.

Steam asks which save to keep
Do not choose automatically. First identify the state you verified offline and compare it with the cloud option. If the cloud option reflects the damaged post-update state, keep the verified local files and only re-enable synchronization after a successful local save and reload.
The restored save loads but progression is still blocked
Confirm that you restored the pre-update copy rather than a folder created after the problem began. If the same progression issue occurs on the older copy, retain both folders and stop testing on the only original. Update 1.1 fixed several progression and save/reload defects, but a restored file cannot repair a state that was already corrupted before the backup was made.
A repeatable update checklist
- Close Hellraiser: Revival completely.
- Copy
%LOCALAPPDATA%HellraiserSavedSaveGamesin full. - Store the copy in a dated location outside the game directory.
- Keep the original backup unchanged.
- Install the update and load a known-good save.
- Play briefly, save, exit, and reload before deleting the backup.
- If anything is missing, disable Steam Cloud, restore the dated copy, and launch once offline.
- Re-enable synchronization only after the local restore and a new save have been verified.
This workflow gives Windows/Steam players a controlled rollback while acknowledging the limits of the documented console procedures. The most important safeguard is simple: maintain a separate local copy before the update, and do not let cloud synchronization overwrite it before you have tested the patched game.
