If you already own Ultimechs, use Steam’s built-in Backup game files command before the announced October 20, 2026 delisting, then copy your saves and Steam Cloud data separately. Restore the archive later from Steam’s Restore Game Backup… command while signed in to the same account that owns the game. The backup preserves files; it does not create a new license or restore multiplayer servers.
What is happening to Ultimechs and when to act
Resolution Games announced that Ultimechs will be removed from VR-platform stores on October 20, 2026. The same announcement, reported by UploadVR on October 8, 2026, says multiplayer services are scheduled to shut down on that date. The game is expected to remain playable in single-player mode afterward, but that is an announced plan rather than a guarantee about every future build or platform.
For an existing Steam owner, October 20 is the practical deadline for creating a local copy while the game is installed and downloadable. Start the backup before the date rather than relying on a final-day download, a Steam Cloud sync, or a later reinstallation.
Delisting, ownership and service shutdown are different events
- Delisting: the store listing is removed, so a person who never obtained the game should not assume it can be acquired afterward.
- Existing entitlement: Steam’s restore procedure requires the account that owns the game. A file archive does not transfer or create that entitlement.
- Multiplayer shutdown: restoring the files cannot bring back an online service that has been turned off.
- Single-player operation: the announced continuation may work after delisting, but its availability depends on the final game build and platform behavior.
Check that your PC can run the game
The Steam listing identifies Resolution Games as both developer and publisher, gives a September 15, 2022 release date, and labels Ultimechs “VR Only” with SteamVR support. The listed minimum Windows configuration is:

| Component | Minimum listed requirement |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti or AMD Radeon RX 470-class GPU |
| Graphics API | DirectX 11 |
| Storage | 400 MB available space |
| VR platform | SteamVR and a compatible VR headset |
These are minimum listing requirements, not a promise of a particular frame rate or headset experience. Keep SteamVR and the headset connection working before testing a restored copy; a successful file restore does not solve a missing VR runtime or incompatible hardware.
Which preservation method covers what
No single Steam operation necessarily preserves the complete installation, personal saves, settings and online functionality. Use the methods below together when the data matters.
| Method | What it preserves | Needs an existing Steam entitlement? | Works as a post-delisting plan? | Multiplayer result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Backup game files | The Steam-managed game installation in a restorable archive | Yes, for restoration | Useful for restoring files you backed up before delisting; it does not grant a new license | Cannot replace a shut-down service |
| Separate save and configuration copy | Personal files that may be outside the installation archive | Not for copying, but the game still needs a valid entitlement to run | Useful only if the restored game can read those files | Does not preserve online services |
| Steam Cloud data copy | Local Steam Cloud data under your Steam user-data directory | Your account is needed to use the data with Steam | Provides an additional local copy; it is not a substitute for the game archive | Does not preserve servers or matchmaking |
| Fresh download after delisting | Nothing you have not already retained | Not guaranteed for a person who never owned the game | Unreliable; do not use it as your preservation plan | Unavailable if the service has ended |
Back up Ultimechs with Steam’s official tool
1. Confirm that the installed copy is the one you want to preserve
Open Steam and check the Library entry for Ultimechs. If the game is installed, leave enough free space on a separate destination for the backup. An external USB SSD or hard drive is a practical destination because it can be disconnected after verification; Steam’s instructions also allow another storage location.

- Display Quality: Experience crystal-clear visuals with high-resolution displays and optimized optics that deliver stunning graphics and reduced screen-door effect
- Comfort Design: Ergonomically engineered headset with adjustable head strap and face gasket ensures comfortable extended wear during long gaming sessions
- PC Integration: Seamlessly connects with your PC to access SteamVR's extensive library of virtual reality games, applications, and experiences
- Renewed with CPS 1-Year Warranty for added hardware protection.
2. Start the backup from the game’s Properties page
- In the Steam Library, right-click Ultimechs.
- Choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Backup game files.
- Choose a destination on a separate drive or other storage and let Steam create the archive.
Steam’s backup facility is intended for games that download, install and patch completely through Steam. Steam warns that some third-party installers or downloaders are incompatible, so do not assume the command can package every title or every non-Steam component.
3. Keep more than one copy
When the archive finishes, copy it to another storage device if the game is important. Keep the copies in different locations when possible. Label each copy with the game name, the creation date, and the computer on which it was made. A second copy protects against a failed drive, accidental deletion or a damaged archive.
4. Test the archive before the deadline
Steam explicitly recommends testing backups. An interruption, a full destination drive or another application using files during the process can leave a backup unusable. Test on a spare library or another computer if available: open Steam’s restore workflow, point it at the archive, and confirm that Steam can read the backup. You do not need to uninstall your working copy merely to verify that the archive is recognized.

Preserve saves, settings and Steam Cloud data separately
Do not assume the Steam game archive contains every personal file. Steam notes that save locations vary by developer and advises checking the game’s community or developer documentation. Files outside the core installation may need to be copied back after restoration. No verified Ultimechs-specific save path is established here, so treat any path posted elsewhere as unconfirmed until Resolution Games documents it.

Steam documents these default locations for local Steam Cloud data:
| Operating system | Default Steam Cloud location |
|---|---|
| Windows | C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata |
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata |
| Linux | ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata |
Inside userdata, Steam account IDs contain folders organized by app ID. If you cannot confidently identify the Ultimechs folder, copy the entire userdata directory to separate storage instead of guessing and omitting the relevant files. This can include data for other games, so protect the copy as you would any personal backup.

Use a clean, consistent copy procedure
- Exit Ultimechs.
- Exit Steam completely, not just the game window.
- Copy the relevant save, settings and
userdatafolders to separate storage. If the exact game-specific location is unknown, preserve the whole documenteduserdatadirectory and consult Resolution Games’ documentation for any additional files. - Record the date, operating system and source computer with the copy.
- Keep the copy separate from the Steam game archive and make a second copy if the files are important.
Closing both the game and Steam prevents a file from changing while it is being copied. Do not delete the original until the backup and the separate data copy can both be opened and accounted for.

Restore the Steam archive
- Install Steam on the replacement or restored Windows PC.
- Sign in to the Steam account that owns Ultimechs.
- Open the Steam menu.
- Choose Restore Game Backup….
- Select the backup files you created and follow Steam’s prompts to complete restoration.
The account sign-in is essential: the restore process does not turn an archive into a transferable license. If Steam cannot validate ownership, the files alone are not a supported way to obtain the game.

After Steam restores the installation, close Steam again and copy the preserved save, configuration and Steam Cloud data back to their corresponding locations. Make a safety copy of any newly created folder before replacing it. Then start Steam and launch the game once in single-player mode to check whether your settings and progress appear. If the restored game creates a new empty profile, exit without overwriting your preserved copy and re-check the path, account folder and app-ID folder.

What you can and cannot expect after October 20
If you owned and backed up Ultimechs
You have the strongest preservation position: a Steam archive for the installation, a valid account entitlement and independent copies of personal data. Restoration still depends on Steam accepting the account and archive, and single-player behavior remains subject to the final post-delisting build.
If you owned it but did not make a backup
Keep the installation intact if it is still on your computer, and copy its Steam Cloud and other personal data now. Whether Steam will permit a fresh download after delisting is not promised by the available announcements, so an uninstalled copy without a tested archive is an uncertain case.
If you never owned it
Do not treat someone else’s archive as a way to acquire the game. The available Steam restoration instructions require the account that owns the title, and the delisting announcement does not promise a new post-delisting license for people who never obtained it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If you mainly want multiplayer
A local archive cannot preserve matchmaking, servers, authentication endpoints or other online infrastructure. The announced October 20 multiplayer shutdown therefore remains a hard limit even when the installation and saves restore successfully.
Troubleshooting common backup and restore failures
“Backup game files” is missing
- Confirm that you opened the game’s Library Properties, then Installed Files.
- Check whether the title was fully downloaded and installed through Steam; Steam says third-party installers or downloaders may be incompatible.
- If the game is not installed, there may be no local installation for Steam to package. Do not wait for the delisting date to resolve that condition.
The backup completes but will not restore
- Try the second copy if you made one.
- Move the archive to a healthy drive with sufficient free space and run Steam > Restore Game Backup… again.
- Review whether another application, a disconnected drive or an interruption occurred during creation; Steam warns that such events can make a backup unusable.
- Do not discard the original archive while troubleshooting.
The game restores but saves are missing
- Remember that Steam does not guarantee that third-party save locations are inside the game archive.
- Exit Steam and the game, then verify that the preserved
userdatacopy and any documented external save or settings folder were restored to the same account and location. - Do not overwrite the preserved copy with a newly generated empty profile.
The restored game opens but multiplayer does not work
That result is consistent with the announced service shutdown. Reinstalling files cannot reactivate a server that has been discontinued. Test the game’s single-player mode separately; its continued availability is expected, not guaranteed.
The game launches without VR
Verify that SteamVR is installed and running, the headset is connected and the PC meets the listed Windows, memory, GPU, DirectX 11 and storage requirements. File restoration does not change the game’s “VR Only” requirement or supply a compatible headset.
Quick Recap
A practical preservation checklist
- Complete the Steam backup before October 20, 2026.
- Store the archive on a separate drive and make another copy when possible.
- Test that Steam can read the archive.
- Copy Steam’s documented
userdatadirectory separately. - Check Resolution Games’ documentation for any additional Ultimechs save or settings location; do not rely on an unverified path.
- Record the source computer, operating system and backup date.
- Keep access to the Steam account that owns the game.
- Restore with Steam > Restore Game Backup…, then put back personal data before launching.
- Plan for single-player only if multiplayer services end as announced.
