Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsProtect a VeraCrypt-encrypted Windows VHD by making two separate recovery assets: a copy of the entire .vhd or .vhdx file, and a VeraCrypt volume-header backup. The full-file copy preserves the container’s contents; the header backup is only for repairing a damaged VeraCrypt header. Windows attaching the virtual disk and VeraCrypt mounting the encrypted volume are also separate steps.
Understand what each backup protects
A VHD or VHDX is a virtual disk file stored at a location on a physical drive. Within that file, VeraCrypt manages an encrypted volume and its header; mounting the volume makes its filesystem and files available to Windows. These are distinct layers, so a problem with one does not necessarily mean the others are damaged. Microsoft describes VHD attachment and detachment in its VHD management documentation.
| Recovery asset | What it is for | What it does not protect |
|---|---|---|
| Copy of the complete VHD/VHDX file | Preserves the container contents as of the copy. It can help if the original file is lost or damaged, provided the copy is current and readable. | Changes made after the copy; it is not a guarantee that every kind of damage can be repaired. |
| VeraCrypt volume-header backup | Repairing a damaged volume header. | The files and data in the container, or damage to the VHD file or its filesystem. |
VeraCrypt explains the scope and credential requirements of header backups in its Program Menu documentation. Treat the header backup as a supplement to—not a replacement for—a separate copy of the full virtual disk file.
Back up the VHD and VeraCrypt volume
1. Copy the complete virtual disk file
- Locate the
.vhdor.vhdxfile in File Explorer or its known storage location. - Copy the entire file to independent storage with enough free capacity. Keep the copy separate from the original so one storage failure or accidental change is less likely to affect both.
- Retain the password, any required keyfiles, and the volume’s PIM information. A file copy is useful only if you can still supply the credentials required to mount its encrypted volume.
VeraCrypt recommends regular backups of important files; its security requirements and precautions explain the broader precautions for protecting encrypted data. Test that a backup is readable periodically where feasible, preferably using a copy rather than risking the only original. The cited guidance does not prescribe a testing schedule.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
2. Save an external volume-header backup
- Open VeraCrypt and select the encrypted volume or file.
- Choose Tools → Backup Volume Header.
- Save the header backup somewhere separate from the VHD copy and protect access to it.
The header backup is encrypted. When restoring it, you must provide credentials valid when that backup was created, including any keyfiles that were required then. Keep those credentials with your recovery records, stored securely.
3. Keep a Rescue Disk for system encryption
If you use VeraCrypt system encryption, create and retain its Rescue Disk using System → Create Rescue Disk. This is a different recovery measure from the embedded or external header backups for a non-system data volume. VeraCrypt’s Rescue Disk documentation describes its system-encryption role.

Open a VHD in Windows and mount it in VeraCrypt
Windows attachment makes the virtual disk available to the operating system; it does not decrypt or mount the VeraCrypt volume. Microsoft documents the following Disk Management procedure for Windows 10, Windows 11, and the Windows Server versions listed on its page, last updated June 25, 2025.
- Open Disk Management with appropriate administrative rights.
- Select Action → Attach VHD, browse to the
.vhdor.vhdxfile, and attach it. - In VeraCrypt, select the relevant encrypted file or device and mount it using the volume’s required password, keyfiles, and PIM.
If Windows does not show the virtual disk but the VHD file itself appears intact, try attaching the file before troubleshooting VeraCrypt mounting. Do not confuse an attached virtual disk with a successfully mounted, decrypted VeraCrypt volume.

Recover when VeraCrypt reports header damage
For a non-system VeraCrypt volume, there may be an embedded backup header, and you may also have made an external header backup. VeraCrypt documents restoring a header through Tools → Restore Volume Header; follow its prompts to select the applicable header backup and provide the required credentials.
- A header restore repairs the header; it does not restore files from a missing or truncated VHD, repair damaged sectors, or fix a corrupted filesystem.
- The restored header carries the password state associated with that header backup. If the volume’s password changed after the backup was made, the newer password may not work until the volume’s header is changed again.
- If the backup was created with required keyfiles, those same keyfiles are required when restoring it.
- VeraCrypt says a successfully used embedded backup header can allow the volume to mount while warning that the primary header is damaged.
VeraCrypt’s header backup and restore instructions cover the documented options and their credential requirements. For system encryption, the embedded end-of-volume header is not available; VeraCrypt identifies the Rescue Disk as the alternative recovery aid, as described in its Rescue Disk documentation.

Before attempting a restore or any other operation that might write to the container, preserve an untouched copy of the complete VHD file. Do not initialize, format, repartition, or write to a container that appears damaged until you have preserved a copy and identified which layer is affected. If the VHD file has been overwritten or the filesystem inside it is damaged, the right next step depends on the specific damage and layout; the cited guidance does not establish one universal recovery method.

- In VeraCrypt, dismount the encrypted volume first.
- If you attached the VHD in Disk Management, select Action → Detach VHD or use the detach option for that disk.
Detaching makes the virtual disk unavailable to Windows; it does not delete the VHD file or its stored data, according to Microsoft’s VHD management documentation.

Windows Backup compatibility note
VeraCrypt’s troubleshooting and limitations documentation says Windows Backup cannot be used to back up data to a non-system VeraCrypt volume in the Windows context it documents. That statement does not establish behavior across every current Windows release, backup utility, or configuration; do not generalize it to all backup workflows.
