Back up a digital game while it is still downloadable, but do not treat one copied folder as a complete preservation plan. A durable archive includes the installed game or an offline installer, patches, DLC, saves, settings, required runtimes, account-recovery information, and a tested way to launch the title without relying on a server that may later disappear. The safest procedure depends on the platform: Steam backups still use Steam and may retain DRM, GOG provides documented offline installers, and Nintendo Switch cloud storage protects eligible save data rather than the game software itself.
What a delisting changes—and what it does not
A delisting usually stops new purchases or new downloads from the store. It does not automatically erase an already installed copy, but continued access depends on the platform’s licensing system, the account that purchased the title, the game’s DRM, and any online services it requires. A game can remain playable locally after removal, become downloadable again from a purchase library, or stop working when authentication or multiplayer servers are shut down.
Keep these situations separate:
- Store removal: the listing and new sales disappear. Previously purchased users may retain a download button, but that is a platform policy rather than a universal right.
- Client or account dependency: a copied installation may still require a signed-in launcher, periodic verification, or a particular client version.
- Service shutdown: an online-only game, account service, matchmaking system, or remote entitlement check can make local files unusable.
- Progress loss: deleting or replacing the executable does not necessarily delete saves, while restoring the executable without its saves, DLC, or configuration can leave the game incomplete.
Preserve the title before any announcement becomes an emergency. Download every component while the store, account, and servers still respond, then verify that the archive can be restored.

1. Install the final available build
Open the game’s store page or library entry and install it on the machine where you intend to archive it. Let the platform finish the initial download, every patch, and any first-run installation such as DirectX, Visual C++ runtimes, or other redistributables. Open the game once and reach its title screen or a saved game. Record the platform, edition, installed version number, purchase account, installation path, and the date of capture.

If the game has optional language packs, texture packs, compatibility files, season passes, or purchased DLC, install those too. A base-game backup is not a complete record of the license you paid for. Note which components were installed and which were unavailable.
2. Copy saves and user data separately
Storefront backup tools generally concentrate on installation files. Save games, screenshots, mods, controller layouts, and configuration files may live elsewhere and can be lost when a title is uninstalled or a computer is replaced.
Search the game’s documentation and the installed directories for folders named SAVE, Saves, or SaveData. On Windows, common locations include DocumentsMy Games, %APPDATA%, and %LOCALAPPDATA%; some titles keep data beside the executable. On macOS, check ~/Library/Application Support; on Linux, inspect ~/.local/share and ~/.config. These are examples, not a guarantee—each game can choose a different path.
Copy the entire relevant folder rather than a single file so that metadata, profiles, settings, and slot indexes remain together. Include mod loaders and mod files only if you are entitled to use them and if the game needs them to reproduce your installation. Create a text note listing every path, the operating system, whether platform cloud synchronization was enabled, and the date of the last save.
3. Preserve supporting files
Keep installers for DLC and patches, language files, controller profiles, shader caches when they are required for a known setup, and any redistributable installers supplied with the game. Do not assume a future launcher will redownload a removed add-on. If a game uses a separate publisher account, write down that account identifier and its recovery method without storing passwords in an unencrypted text file.
Steam: use the official backup tool, then prepare offline play
Make a Steam backup
Valve’s supported workflow is:
- Open Library and right-click the game.
- Select Properties, then Installed Files.
- Choose Backup game files and select a destination with enough free space.
- Wait for the backup to finish and label the resulting files with the game name, edition, and version.
- Use Steam’s restore function on a test machine or spare folder while the original installation remains available.
Steam states: “Only games that completely download, install, and patch through Steam are compatible with this tool.” That excludes titles whose data arrives through a separate launcher or whose installation is incomplete. Steam also recommends testing created backups. The backup is not automatically a copy of saves or custom files, so add the separately located data described above.

Check what the Steam backup cannot guarantee
A Steam backup can preserve the files Steam delivered, but it does not transform a Steam license into a standalone installer. The restored game may still require Steam to sign in, a product key, a publisher account, or an online DRM check. A title that depends on a remote server can fail even when every local file is intact. Record these dependencies in the archive notes instead of assuming “backup complete” means “future-proof.”
Set up Steam Offline Mode before the listing disappears
Prepare offline use while Steam and the game’s authentication services are reachable:
- Start Steam online and sign in to the purchasing account.
- Allow Steam and the game to finish all updates.
- Launch the game once, pass any first-run setup, and confirm that a local save can be created and loaded.
- Make sure Steam can remember the account on that computer. Keep your recovery email, two-factor authentication method, and backup codes available in case a later sign-in is required.
- Close the game, then select Steam in the upper-left menu and choose Go Offline.
- Restart Steam in Offline Mode and launch the game. Record whether it reaches the menu, loads the test save, and exposes the expected DLC.
Valve describes Offline Mode as allowing games to run through Steam “without having an active connection to the Steam Network.” Features that require a network connection—such as multiplayer, cloud synchronization, online authentication, leaderboards, and some launcher checks—remain unavailable. If the game refuses to start offline, preserve that result in your notes; it is an important limitation of the archive.
GOG: download the independent offline installers
When a title is available through GOG, its account page may offer the most straightforward consumer preservation path in this set of platforms. GOG Support instructs account holders to choose “DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS” and download all necessary setup files.
- Sign in to the account that owns the game and open the game’s library entry.
- Choose DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS.
- Download every installer part, not only the first executable. Large games may be split into multiple files.
- Download every listed patch, language package, bonus component, and DLC installer that belongs to your purchase.
- Place all parts in one clearly named archive directory and keep the original filenames.
- Generate a checksum for each file with a standard hashing utility and save the results in a text file beside the installers.
- Run the installer on a test machine without the Galaxy application, then launch the game and load a test save.
Offline installers reduce client dependence, but they do not guarantee that a game has no network requirement. Multiplayer, account-linked features, third-party DRM, and server-based services can still disappear. Preserve the installer, patches, DLC, saves, and checksum list as one set and document any component that required a connection during testing.
Nintendo Switch: cloud saves are not game archives
Nintendo’s Save Data Cloud requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, and only eligible games support it. The service backs up save data—the progress associated with a game—not a general copy of the game executable, patches, or DLC. If membership expires, access to cloud backups can be unavailable. Treat the feature as a progress safeguard, not as an independent preservation archive.

Before a possible delisting, open the game’s Switch software options and verify whether Save Data Cloud is supported and synchronized for the correct user profile. Keep the Nintendo Account recovery email, two-factor authentication details, purchase receipts, and membership information documented. Nintendo says purchases are tied to the Nintendo Account that made them, so losing that account can be more serious than losing a particular console.
For a Switch title that depends on online events, servers, or account checks, note that a local console copy may not reproduce those services later. Preserve screenshots of your installed version and DLC list if you need a record of what was present; these do not replace the software itself.
PlayStation: protect the license and account as well as the download
PlayStation describes digital products as personal licenses. Its terms state: “When you order or purchase a product from PlayStation Store, you buy a personal license to use that product for private, non-commercial use.” That wording matters when planning a backup: possession of downloaded files does not grant a right to redistribute them or bypass the platform’s controls.
Recommended Free Tools
Download the complete game, patches, and DLC to a console or supported storage location while the store account still offers them. Copy any separately managed save data using the console’s supported save-transfer or cloud feature, and record which user profile created each save. Confirm whether the title starts with the console disconnected from the internet; some games permit local play while others require a license check.
PlayStation warns that account closure, suspension, service discontinuation, or server shutdown can remove access or functionality. Keep the account’s recovery email, two-factor authentication method, receipts, and accepted terms in your records. Do not rely on a family member’s account or an account whose credentials you cannot recover.

| Nintendo Switch | Not established as a consumer offline-installer workflow. Store access and account entitlement remain important. | Purchases are tied to the purchasing Nintendo Account; some software or features require online checks. | Save Data Cloud covers eligible save data, not a general copy of the game, patches, or DLC. | Online services and event functionality can disappear; cloud access can be unavailable with an expired membership. | Protect the Nintendo Account, recovery email, two-factor authentication, receipts, and membership status. | Save Data Cloud is an official progress backup for eligible games, not a complete software archive. |
| PlayStation | Not stated as a general standalone-installer option in the available guidance. | Digital products are personal licenses; account status, console licensing, and some server checks can affect access. | Back up saves through supported console methods and preserve installed DLC with the game where possible. | Account closure, suspension, service discontinuation, or server shutdown can remove access or functionality. | Keep recovery details, two-factor authentication, receipts, and the accepted terms for the purchasing account. | Use the console’s supported download and save-transfer features; do not assume they create a DRM-free copy. |
Store the archive redundantly and prove that it restores
Use separate copies
Keep at least two copies on separate media. A practical arrangement is an external USB SSD or hard drive plus a second local or offline copy. Do not leave both copies permanently connected to the same computer: a failed drive, ransomware, accidental deletion, or a corrupted sync can otherwise destroy both.

Use a folder structure that identifies the platform, title, edition, version, and capture date. Inside it, separate Installers, GameFiles, DLC, Patches, Saves, Settings, and Notes. In Notes, record the installation path, operating system, client version, account identifier (not the password), cloud-save status, offline-test result, and any required launch sequence.

Generate checksums for offline installer parts and other files that can be hashed reliably. Recalculate them after copying to the second drive. A mismatch indicates corruption or an incomplete transfer; recopy from the known-good source before deleting anything. For platform-managed backups that change internal metadata, retain the original backup untouched and document the tool and date used.
Perform a restoration test
- Choose a spare folder or a separate computer; do not experiment first on the only working installation.
- Disconnect the test machine from the internet when the platform’s offline procedure permits it.
- Restore the game or run the offline installer, then apply the preserved patches and DLC in the documented order.
- Copy the preserved save and configuration folders into the paths recorded in your notes.
- Launch the game, load the test save, check the expected DLC, and try a normal offline restart.
- Record the client version, required account sign-in, missing components, error messages, and the exact fix.
Run this test while the storefront and account still function. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not evidence.

The backup restores the game but not the progress
Most likely, saves were stored outside the installation directory or cloud synchronization was disabled. Locate the game-specific save folder, copy it separately, and verify that the restored account or profile has permission to read it. Keep a before-and-after screenshot or note showing the test save loaded successfully.
The launcher demands an internet connection
Launch the game online once, finish updates, and configure the platform’s supported offline mode before disconnecting. If the title still requires authentication, document that limitation and preserve the account-recovery material. Do not attempt to defeat DRM or modify executable checks merely because you purchased the game.
DLC is missing after restoration
Check that the DLC was installed under the same edition and account, and that its installer or package was included in the archive. Some add-ons are entitlement checks rather than independent files; record whether the restoration test could activate them.

The game starts but online features do not
This is expected for multiplayer, cloud, leaderboard, event, and server-authoritative features when the relevant service is unavailable. Preserve the local campaign and saves, but describe online functionality as a dependency rather than promising that it will survive delisting.
A copied drive contains damaged files
Compare checksums with the known-good copy, replace mismatched files, and keep the damaged media out of the rotation until it has been tested. Never treat a successful file copy operation as proof that the data is readable.
What the law generally permits—and where the limits are
Copyright rules vary by country, so the following legal explanation is U.S.-specific. The U.S. Copyright Office explains that Section 117 permits an owner of a computer program to make an archival copy under stated conditions and notes that “Although the precise term used under section 117 is ‘archival’ copy, not ‘backup’ copy, these terms today are used interchangeably.” The provision is not a blanket authorization to duplicate every downloaded copyrighted work, and a digital purchase may be a license rather than ownership of a copy.

A practical preservation record
For each title, keep one short record alongside the files containing:
- Title, edition, platform, region, and purchase account.
- Installed version and capture date.
- Installation path and every save, configuration, mod, and DLC location.
- Client version and whether the game launched offline.
- Names and checksums of installer, patch, and DLC files.
- Cloud-save status and the date of the last synchronized save.
- Required recovery email, two-factor method, receipts, and where the credentials are securely stored.
- Restoration date, test machine, result, and any unresolved dependency.
This record turns an opaque folder into an understandable archive that can be restored years later, even if you have forgotten which launcher, profile, or save path the game used.
