Back up your campaign saves and settings before changing or removing mods, and treat every game update as a compatibility check. For Steam on Windows, SEGA’s troubleshooting procedure uses a copy of the Creative Assembly folder; for mod lists, use the installed Mod Manager’s profile and save features if available, or keep your own record of each campaign’s setup.

Choose a way to track each campaign’s mod setup

You need both a record of which mods a campaign uses and a separate copy of important files. These approaches can work together:

Approach What it helps with Main limitation
Mod Manager profiles and save association Can make it easier to identify and reactivate a campaign’s mod setup. Availability depends on the Mod Manager version installed. Creative Assembly’s November 27, 2025 announcement described these features in an Early Access build, not as a guarantee about the October 2026 launcher.
Manual mod list and file backup Keeps a separate record of active mods and a copy of relevant settings and saves, independent of launcher profile features. You must maintain the list yourself and restore files carefully.

Creative Assembly’s November 27, 2025 Early Access Mod Manager announcement described saved and shareable profiles, choosing a save for “Continue Campaign,” and automatically activating the mods associated with that save. It also said the manager could have bugs, Workshop uploading was not yet available in that manager, and the original launcher would remain available during development. Check your installed launcher’s options rather than assuming those details still apply.

Back up saves and settings before troubleshooting

SEGA’s Steam support procedure for Windows uses the Creative Assembly folder in the user’s roaming AppData directory. Before moving or resetting files, exit the game and make a separate copy of that folder so your campaign saves and settings remain available.

Total War: Warhammer II – Blood for the Blood God II [Online Game Code]
  • From the icy peaks of Naggaroth to the arid reaches of the Southlands, each race struggles for dominion. As their conquests grow, the land turns crimson, and rivers run red with the blood of the slain!
  • Blood for The Blood God brings a number of gory, mature-rated effects to Total War: WARHAMMER II
  1. Close Total War: WARHAMMER III.
  2. Open C:UsersYOURUSERNAMEAppDataRoamingThe Creative Assembly, replacing YOURUSERNAME with your Windows account name. AppData may be hidden in File Explorer; you can enter the path in its address bar.
  3. Copy the relevant Creative Assembly folder to a clearly named backup location. SEGA’s instructions describe creating a folder on the desktop and moving the game folder there during troubleshooting; keeping an additional copy rather than relying on a single moved folder is a cautious safeguard.
  4. Write down the active mods for each campaign, or save a Mod Manager profile if the installed version provides that option. Include enough detail to distinguish campaigns with different setups.

The exact location and launcher behavior may differ outside Steam on Windows. SEGA’s Steam troubleshooting guide is the basis for the path and reset procedure; it is not a universal file-location guide for every platform or storefront. A separate external drive is optional if you want an additional copy, not a requirement in SEGA’s procedure.

After a game update or crash

Check whether the game is stable without mods before changing several parts of the setup at once. Creative Assembly’s Hotfix 7.2.2 notice warns that user-generated mods may have compatibility issues with new game updates and recommends disabling mods when a release is followed by performance or stability problems.

  1. Keep your backup intact and note which campaign and mods were active when the problem appeared.
  2. Temporarily disable mods, then test whether the problem changes. This helps narrow the cause; it does not establish that the save will load correctly without its mods.
  3. If the game launches cleanly, check each mod’s current compatibility information before restoring it. Re-enable mods selectively, changing one variable at a time, and check whether the problem returns.
  4. Keep the backup until the campaign loads reliably with the intended setup. Do not treat removing mods as harmless to every save; the official guidance does not promise universal save recovery.

SEGA also notes that Steam Workshop mods or changes to program files can interfere with operation, including when a mod has not been updated for the current game. A clean launch is therefore useful evidence when troubleshooting, not proof that every modded campaign is safe to resume.

Reset files only when troubleshooting calls for it

SEGA’s Windows Steam instructions use a folder reset as a diagnostic step: move the game’s folder out of the Creative Assembly roaming directory, launch the game, and, if the test works, copy the save folder back. Preserve your backup and use this procedure as support troubleshooting, not as a routine way to manage mods.

  1. With the game closed, create a clearly named folder on the desktop or another safe location.
  2. Move the relevant game folder from C:UsersYOURUSERNAMEAppDataRoamingThe Creative Assembly into that folder.
  3. Start the game and test whether the issue remains.
  4. If the game works, copy the save folder from your preserved backup into the newly created game folder as SEGA’s instructions describe. Do not delete your backup before confirming that the intended campaign and settings are available.

Because this resets files used by the game, it can change more than the mod list. If you are unsure which folder applies to your installation, stop before moving or deleting anything and consult the support guidance for your platform and storefront.
