Make a fresh iPhone backup before a reset, risky troubleshooting step, or repair appointment, then check its completion time. A repair may erase the device, and backup being switched on does not prove a recent copy exists.
Choose where to keep your backup
You can back up to iCloud or to a Mac or Windows computer. Keeping both can give you another recovery route, but neither method guarantees that every app or data category is included. Apple’s iPhone backup guide describes both options.
| Option | What you need | Recovery |
|---|---|---|
| iCloud | Apple Account, available iCloud storage, Wi-Fi, and power | Restore during iPhone setup using a network connection |
| Mac or Windows computer | Computer, suitable data cable, and enough local disk space; the password if the backup is encrypted | Reconnect to the computer and restore using Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes |
These are practical differences, not a ranking: Apple’s guidance does not establish that either method is universally safer, faster, or more complete.
Make and verify an iCloud backup
- Open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup.
- If needed, turn on Back Up This iPhone, then tap Back Up Now.
- Keep the iPhone connected to Wi-Fi and power while the backup runs. Check the same screen for the latest backup date and time, and confirm that available iCloud storage is sufficient.
Automatic iCloud backups run daily when the iPhone is connected to power, locked, and on Wi-Fi. Starting one manually and checking the status is the way to confirm a fresh backup rather than assuming the automatic one has run. See Apple’s iCloud and computer backup instructions.

Back up to a Mac
- Connect the iPhone to the Mac with a suitable cable and open Finder.
- Select the iPhone in Finder’s sidebar, then open General.
- Select Back up all of the data on your iPhone to this Mac.
- To preserve Health and Activity data in the local backup, select Encrypt local backup. Set a password and store it safely; you will need it to restore that backup.
- Click Back Up Now. Check the backup date and time in Finder when it finishes.
Finder backup instructions apply to macOS 10.15 or later. Earlier macOS versions use iTunes for this process, as described in Apple’s iPhone user guide.
Back up to a Windows PC
- Connect the iPhone to the PC. Open Apple Devices if it is installed; otherwise, open iTunes.
- Select the iPhone and open its backup controls.
- Choose the computer backup option, and enable encryption if you want the backup to include Health and Activity data.
- Start the backup, then verify its completion in the app.
Apple warns that an encrypted computer backup cannot be restored without its password. Write it down and store it somewhere safe before proceeding; Apple says the password cannot be recovered. See Apple’s Windows backup instructions.
Know what is—and is not—in an iCloud backup
iCloud Backup stores device information and settings that do not regularly sync to iCloud, including settings, Home Screen layout, and app organization. Some content syncs separately, so check that it has finished syncing before erasing the phone. Apple explains these distinctions in its guidance on information that may be missing after an iCloud restore.

For a local encrypted backup, Apple specifically says encryption is needed in the Windows workflow to preserve Health and Activity data, including data from Apple Watch. Keep its password accessible for recovery.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPrepare the iPhone before service
Complete the backup and check that iCloud features have finished syncing before you erase or hand in the phone. Apple’s current Australia service-preparation guidance also lists turning off Apple Cash, removing Wallet cards and passes, checking Parts and Service History, and preparing Find My. The Find My step depends on software version: Apple describes Ready for Repair or Trade-In for iOS or iPadOS 27 or later, and turning off Find My for version 26 or earlier. Procedures and service requirements can vary, so follow the current instructions for your location and appointment: Apple’s service preparation guide.
If the iPhone is unresponsive, Apple advises completing as many preparation steps as possible; some may be available on the web.

Restore the backup after troubleshooting or repair
If the iPhone was erased, choose the saved backup during setup. An iCloud restore needs a network connection; a computer backup requires reconnecting the iPhone to the computer used for the backup. Choose the relevant backup by its date. Apple’s restore instructions cover both methods.
If you set up the returned iPhone as new and later decide to restore an older iCloud backup, Apple says you must erase the phone and restore as soon as possible. Newer backups created after setting it up as new can overwrite previously saved iCloud backups. If you disabled Find My for service, turn it back on.
If the backup will not complete
- Update the Mac or PC and update Apple Devices or iTunes.
- Check the cable and USB connection, and confirm the computer recognizes the iPhone.
- Restart both devices and check that the computer has enough free disk space.
- Try another computer or use iCloud instead.
- If a backup is corrupt or incompatible, update the computer, check for a software-version mismatch, and try another backup or iCloud.
Do not delete an existing backup until you have confirmed that another usable copy is available. Apple’s computer backup and restore troubleshooting guide provides additional checks.
