Back up the entire reproducible ML system, not just a model file. Export versioned weights, tokenizers, preprocessing code, every dataset needed to train and evaluate, environment and pipeline definitions, configuration, evaluation evidence, licenses, and provenance. Keep at least two encrypted copies in different failure domains—one under your own control (offline drive or on-premises storage) and one in an independently controlled object-storage account. Create a manifest with cryptographic hashes and complete a restore drill before a shutdown or migration deadline.
Why a cloud ML workspace is not a backup
A managed notebook, experiment tracker, or machine-learning workspace is an operating environment. It may contain pointers to data, transient runtimes, run metadata, credentials, and provider-specific services that cannot be recreated elsewhere. If the provider closes the account, retires a region, suspends billing, or gives you only a short export window, a snapshot of the workspace is not enough to reproduce a model.
The practical boundary is simple: assume the provider-managed workspace is replaceable. Your independent archive must let another engineer obtain the permitted data, rebuild the software environment, run training or inference, and verify that the result is the intended release. Azure states this limitation explicitly: “Azure Machine Learning itself doesn’t provide automatic failover or disaster recovery.” Its workspace metadata—including run history, models, and environments—cannot be backed up and restored automatically, so notebooks, pipelines, models, data assets, jobs, and configuration must be exported as code or files. Microsoft’s failover and disaster-recovery documentation was current on 2026-10-19.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A shutdown plan also covers less dramatic events: an account that is locked while an incident is investigated, a region that becomes unavailable, a product that changes its API, or a quota that prevents a large download. Export while the original workspace still works, and test the archive in an environment that does not depend on the same administrator, identity system, or network.

What to preserve: the complete backup inventory
Save immutable release bundles rather than a loose folder of checkpoints. Each bundle should identify the model and dataset versions it contains and the source commit that produced them.
| Area | Files and records to export | What a successful backup proves |
|---|---|---|
| Model artifacts | Weights; tokenizer files; vocabulary; model and generation configuration; preprocessing and postprocessing code; quantization settings; adapter or fine-tuning files; framework and runtime versions. | The model can be loaded without downloading an undocumented component from the old provider. |
| Data | Raw, cleaned, training, validation, and test sets; schemas; data dictionaries; labels; sampling and split rules; feature-generation code; dataset version IDs; licenses, consent records, and retention restrictions. | The same examples and transformations can be identified and legally used. |
| Reproducibility | Source repository and commit ID; dependency lockfiles; Dockerfile or environment specification; random seeds; hyperparameters; hardware assumptions; pipeline and job definitions; evaluation reports and metric code. | Another operator can rebuild the software and explain any result difference. |
| Operations | Deployment manifests; model-server settings; API contracts and example requests; monitoring and alert rules; IAM-role mapping; rollback instructions; references to required secrets. | The model can be served and operated, not merely downloaded. |
| Integrity and provenance | A manifest containing each path, byte size, modification time, version or commit ID, and SHA-256 (or stronger) digest; export date; provider, account or project, region, workspace, and operator. | A later restore can detect truncation, tampering, or an accidental version mix-up. |
Never place plaintext passwords, API keys, signing keys, or database credentials in the archive. Store a reference to the secret’s name, rotation owner, and required permissions. Export the IAM mapping and a recovery contact list separately so a new administrator knows which access must be recreated.
Build a backup layout that survives provider failure
Use the 3-2-1 principle as a design target: three copies of important data, on at least two storage technologies, with one copy offline or otherwise isolated. The minimum for a small project is an encrypted portable drive or NAS plus an independently controlled cloud object-storage copy, in addition to the working copy. The second cloud copy must not be administered solely through the provider that may shut down your workspace.
Recommended Free Tools
| Option | Strengths | Risks and controls |
|---|---|---|
| Encrypted portable SSD or hard drive | Fast local restore; no recurring storage dependency; can be disconnected from ransomware or account incidents. | Device loss, aging media, and manual handling. Keep two rotated drives, encrypt them, record custody, and verify a sample after every export. |
| NAS with redundant disks | Shared team access, scheduled snapshots, and high-capacity local storage. | Redundant disks do not protect against fire, theft, ransomware, or administrator compromise. Replicate the NAS to an offline device or a separate location. |
| Independently controlled object storage | Geographic separation, lifecycle policies, scalable capacity, and programmable versioning or immutability. | Egress charges, transfer time, access-policy mistakes, and dependence on a second provider. Use a separate account, administrators, keys, and billing owner from the source workspace. |
Compare choices on total capacity and growth, transfer throughput, geographic separation, durability and immutability, encryption and key ownership, access-control model, egress cost, restore time, and operational burden. There is no universal recovery-time objective or hardware-sizing number in the cited guidance. Measure your own restore time, including download, checksum verification, environment creation, model loading, and smoke testing.
Step-by-step export procedure
1. Freeze and identify a release
- Choose a release identifier such as
fraud-detector-2026-10-19-r07. Record the provider, account or project, region, workspace name, runtime image, export date, and operator. - Freeze the source commit, model version, dataset version IDs, dependency lockfiles, and configuration used by the release. If training is still running, label the checkpoint as provisional instead of silently replacing the release.
- Write down data-residency, consent, deletion, and license restrictions before copying. A backup does not override a requirement to delete or localize personal data.
2. Enumerate objects through the provider API or CLI
List model registrations, checkpoints, experiment runs, notebooks, pipelines, jobs, environment images, data assets, feature definitions, and attached artifacts. Export the list itself as a text or JSON record. It is the inventory against which you can detect an object that was omitted from the archive.

Use the provider’s documented export or download tools rather than a browser download of a single checkpoint. Capture the command or API request, its completion status, and any pagination or transfer-limit warnings in the release notes. Start large exports early enough to cover provider initiation periods and transfer limits.
3. Export data in portable, documented formats
Preserve the source representation when it is legally and technically required, then create a portable copy with its schema. Common formats named in storage guidance include Parquet, HDF5, and TFRecord. For each partition, include column names and types, units, null and encoding rules, row counts, label definitions, and the code that produced it. Record whether a split is time-based, group-based, or random and save the random seed.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If the dataset is too large for one archive, keep a manifest for every shard and a top-level manifest that lists all shards in order. A model that depends on an external database, feature store, or object prefix is not portable until the required records and extraction query are exported or the dependency is explicitly replaced.
4. Export the software and job description
- Commit the application and training source, including submodules and generated schema code.
- Export a lockfile with exact package versions and a container definition or environment specification. Record the base image digest, operating-system and accelerator assumptions, CUDA or driver requirements when applicable, and the serving framework version.
- Save pipeline graphs, job parameters, scheduler settings, retry behavior, resource limits, mount paths, and input/output locations.
- Include evaluation scripts, reports, confusion matrices or other task-appropriate metrics, and the thresholds used for promotion.
5. Copy to two independent destinations
- Encrypt the release bundle before it leaves the workspace. Use a key owned and recoverable by your organization; document the key identifier and recovery procedure without putting the key in the same archive.
- Copy the encrypted bundle to an offline portable drive or a NAS in a separate physical location. Disconnect the offline copy after verification.
- Copy it to an object-storage account with a different administrator, credentials, and billing relationship. Enable object versioning where available and use retention or immutability controls for released bundles.
- Keep the source provider’s copy until both independent copies pass verification and a restore drill.
6. Generate and verify a manifest
For every exported object, record its relative path, byte size, modification time, version or commit ID, and SHA-256 digest (or a stronger digest). A manifest can be a newline-delimited JSON file or a tabular file, provided the format is documented and itself hashed. Generate it after the export is complete, then sign or otherwise protect it from modification.
Verify representative small and large files immediately after each transfer. At a later date, download a sample from the independent copy and recalculate the digest. A matching hash proves byte integrity; it does not prove that the data is complete or legally usable, so also compare object counts, row counts, and dataset version IDs.

7. Perform a clean restore drill
- Use a fresh account or isolated machine that has no access to the original workspace.
- Retrieve the manifest and encrypted bundle, restore the key through the documented recovery path, and verify all hashes before extracting files.
- Recreate the environment from the container definition or lockfile. Note missing packages, unavailable base images, incompatible drivers, and any provider-only service.
- Run a minimal inference request and compare output shape, tokenizer behavior, preprocessing, and a known-good result. For a training release, run a small deterministic sample and confirm that metrics fall within the documented tolerance.
- Measure elapsed time, network volume, CPU or GPU requirements, operator steps, and unresolved substitutions. Update the runbook and repeat after major dependency or infrastructure changes.
Provider-specific portability considerations
AWS
AWS multicloud guidance recommends version control for models and datasets, automated training and deployment, drift monitoring, and the ability to exfiltrate trained models to other environments. Its storage assessment asks teams to define retention and backup requirements for training data and model artifacts, including daily and off-site backups, and names cloud and on-premises storage and formats such as Parquet, HDF5, and TFRecord.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For an AWS-based project, export the model artifact and its registry metadata, the dataset manifests and version IDs, pipeline definitions, notebook or repository source, environment image references, and evaluation outputs. Do not assume that an orchestration service, feature store, or container registry will exist after migration; save the inputs and definitions needed to recreate each one.
Microsoft Azure
Azure AI management guidance recommends automated schedules for trained models, datasets, and configuration files, geo-redundant options, separate regions, version control, and recovery runbooks. Azure storage guidance recommends Blob versioning for datasets and models while weighing throughput, latency, transfer time, and compatibility.
The Azure Machine Learning limitation is especially important: its workspace metadata, run history, models, and environments are not automatically backed up and restored. Export notebooks, pipelines, models, data assets, jobs, and configuration as files or code, and retain the export outside the source subscription and region. Test which environment images and registries can actually be pulled during a recovery; replace provider-specific references in the runbook when they cannot.
Google Cloud
Google Cloud’s portability documentation describes documented APIs and tools for moving data, direct object downloads, custom-image export to Cloud Storage, and a free data-transfer exit program for covered services. Eligibility and terms can change, so verify them at the time of execution rather than treating the program as a permanent entitlement.

Its export documentation specifies artifact requirements for TensorFlow, PyTorch, XGBoost, and scikit-learn prebuilt serving containers. Check those requirements before packaging a model: an artifact that loads in a training notebook may not satisfy the serving container’s directory layout, signatures, or entry-point expectations. Start exports early enough to cover provider initiation periods and transfer limits, then run the clean restore drill outside the original project.
Hugging Face Hub
The command-line interface can copy local files to and from model repositories, datasets, and buckets, including model.safetensors and dataset files. Treat a Hub repository as one replication target, not the only backup. Export the repository at a known commit, retain the local or object-storage copy, and record large-file pointers or other storage indirection in the manifest.
Private repositories, access tokens, resource groups, multifactor authentication, commit signatures, and malware scanning are useful controls for a secondary copy. They do not replace an independently administered archive: keep recovery credentials, ownership records, and the release bundle outside the same service.
Scheduling and change control
Make backup frequency match the rate at which a loss would hurt. Run a scheduled export at least daily for actively changing training data or production models when the business can tolerate at most a day of work loss; use a longer interval only when the project’s recovery-point requirement supports it. Trigger an additional release export whenever a model, dataset, pipeline, dependency, container digest, or serving contract changes.
- Alert when a scheduled export fails, produces fewer objects than the previous release, or exceeds an expected size or duration.
- Retain named production releases and the exact predecessor needed for rollback; apply separate lifecycle rules to temporary checkpoints.
- Review licenses, consent and retention restrictions whenever data is copied to a new geography or account.
- Rotate encryption and access credentials according to your security policy, and test that a new administrator can recover them without the original provider.
Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Recovery action |
|---|---|---|
| The checkpoint downloads but will not load elsewhere. | Tokenizer, configuration, adapter, custom code, or framework version was omitted. | Restore the complete model directory, pin the runtime and dependencies, and include custom preprocessing and postprocessing modules. |
| Training starts but metrics differ substantially. | Different dataset split, sampling rule, seed, preprocessing version, or hardware behavior. | Compare dataset IDs, row counts, split files, seeds, hyperparameters, and feature-code commits; document nondeterministic operations and tolerance. |
| Only a tiny object list appears after migration. | Pagination, permissions, symbolic links, or large-file indirection hid objects. | Compare the provider inventory with the manifest, rerun listing with pagination, and verify object counts and total bytes. |
| Restore is too slow for the business requirement. | Insufficient throughput, cold archive tier, cross-region transfer, or an unmeasured decompression step. | Measure each phase, retain a warm operational copy, partition large archives, and revise the recovery-time objective with stakeholders. |
| The backup exists but cannot be legally retained. | Consent, residency, deletion, or license terms were not carried into the new storage location. | Classify data before export, exclude or tokenize restricted records, and obtain the required approval or deletion workflow. |
| Ransomware or an administrator deletes every copy. | All replicas shared credentials or were continuously mounted. | Use separate administrators, immutable versions or retention locks, offline rotation, MFA, and an access review. |

The recovery README should state the expected directory layout, supported CPU or GPU modes, required operating-system and driver versions, the command or entry point for a smoke test, expected output shape, and the person responsible for approving a restored release. Keep secrets out of this folder.
When the provider announces a shutdown
- Stop nonessential writes and create a final release identifier. Preserve an audit log of who initiated the export and when.
- Prioritize irreplaceable and legally restricted data, production model versions, and the environment needed to serve them. Start parallel transfers only within the provider’s rate and policy limits.
- Export account, workspace, region, billing, IAM, network, registry, and quota information that a replacement environment will need. These settings are often absent from a model file.
- Verify both independent copies and run the clean restore drill before the announced termination date. Keep the source account active until the test passes.
- After migration, revoke obsolete tokens, rotate secrets that were exposed to the old environment, and retain the final manifest and transfer logs with the release record.
The goal is not merely to possess a downloadable file. It is to have an independently controlled, integrity-checked and legally usable system that another operator can restore on measured hardware and run without the original workspace.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should an AI model backup run?
Set the interval from your recovery-point requirement. Use at least daily exports for actively changing production data or models when losing a day is unacceptable, and trigger an additional release export whenever a model, dataset, pipeline, dependency, container, or serving contract changes.
Can a model repository alone serve as the disaster-recovery copy?
No. A repository may omit provider metadata, feature-generation code, environment definitions, permissions, or legal records. Keep a complete encrypted archive in an independently administered storage system and verify it with a restore drill.
What if the training data cannot be copied to another region or provider?
Classify residency, consent, deletion, and license restrictions before export. Exclude or tokenize restricted records, keep an approved local replica where required, and document the exact data-access procedure that a replacement training environment must follow.
How do I know whether my backup meets the required recovery time?
Measure a clean restore from the independent copy, including transfer, decryption, hash verification, environment creation, model loading, and a smoke test. Record the elapsed time and resource requirements; no universal RTO or hardware figure applies to every project.
