Back up your Galaxy Z Fold or Z Flip before installing an update as a precaution, not because Samsung requires it. Choose Samsung Cloud, Google backup, or a local Smart Switch copy based on the destination and recovery option you need. Wait for the backup to finish and check its completion status before you start the update.
Before you start
- For a cloud backup, connect to Wi-Fi, sign in to the relevant Samsung or Google account, and check that the account has available storage. Samsung recommends Wi-Fi for Samsung Cloud; mobile-data charges may apply if you use cellular data. See Samsung’s Galaxy backup and restore guidance.
- Make sure the phone has enough battery. If you use Smart Switch, follow its prompts and keep the phone and destination nearby during the process.
- Use the categories and options displayed on your own phone. Available items and menu wording can vary by model, software version, country, and carrier.
Find the backup options
- Open Settings and tap Accounts and backup.
- Choose the option you want: Samsung Cloud, Google backup, or Smart Switch. Samsung’s Galaxy backup instructions and Z Fold6 user manual describe these options, but the exact labels can differ.
- If you do not see the option, use Settings search for “backup” or “Smart Switch.”
Choose a backup method

These methods have different destinations and restore paths; Samsung does not provide controlled speed or completeness benchmarks comparing them. Check the categories offered on your phone and choose based on your available storage, network access, and intended restore situation.
Back up with Samsung Cloud
- In Settings > Accounts and backup, open the Samsung Cloud backup option.
- Confirm that you are signed in to the Samsung account you intend to use.
- Select the categories available on-screen, then tap Back up now.
- Wait until the phone reports that the backup is complete. The specific status wording can vary.
Samsung Cloud copies supported data, but the available categories depend on the phone and service availability. Review the selected items rather than assuming everything on the device is included.
Back up with Google
- Open Settings > Accounts and backup, then choose the Google backup option shown on your phone.
- Confirm the correct Google account and review the backup categories or status displayed.
- Start or run the backup using the on-screen control, then wait for its latest completion or backup status to update.
Samsung’s cited guidance for the Fold7, Flip7, and Flip7 FE describes restoring Google Drive data during Setup Wizard. The available restore path may depend on the device and setup situation.

Make a local Smart Switch copy
- Open Settings > Accounts and backup > Smart Switch, or search Settings for “Smart Switch.”
- Choose a computer or compatible external-storage destination and follow the prompts to select supported content.
- Keep the devices connected as instructed and wait for Smart Switch to show that the copy or transfer has finished.
Samsung lists USB OTG flash drives and external drives among local options. A compatible USB-C or USB OTG flash drive is optional; a computer is another local destination. Check compatibility for your specific Fold or Flip before using external storage. Smart Switch does not guarantee that every app’s private data, sign-in state, or personal file will be recoverable.

Use the latest success or completion indication in the backup option you chose as your checkpoint. There is no single verification screen established for every Fold and Flip model, so rely on the status shown by that service or Smart Switch. Once it reports completion, proceed with the phone’s normal software-update screen; the update menu path varies by model and software version.
