To avoid using your regular mobile data or triggering its roaming charges, install Opera’s eSIM before you travel, select it as your phone’s mobile-data line when you arrive, and turn off data roaming on your regular SIM. Check the destination, data allowance, validity, and price shown in Opera before you buy. Opera’s travel eSIM connects the whole phone, so apps outside Opera can use its data.
What Opera’s eSIM does—and what it does not do
Opera’s travel eSIM is integrated into Opera for Android and powered by Holiday.com. It is a data-only connection for the phone; it does not replace your regular phone number. When selected for mobile data, it can provide internet access to apps across the device, not just the Opera browser.
The eSIM is installed and activated in software rather than inserted as a physical SIM card. Opera says it can be purchased only through Opera for Android, not Opera Mini or Opera GX mobile. That means background activity and other apps can consume the eSIM allowance, although Opera’s published instructions do not quantify background use or provide per-app controls for every Android version.
Check that your phone and Opera app are eligible
Opera’s setup guide requires Android 10 or newer, an eSIM-capable phone that is not carrier-locked, and the latest version of Opera for Android. Compatibility depends on both the handset and its carrier status; do not assume a particular model will work without checking. If you are unsure whether your phone supports eSIM or is locked, ask your mobile operator. Opera’s eSIM setup guide has the service’s current setup requirements.

Install the eSIM before you leave
Set it up while you have stable internet, ideally before departure. Opera says the plan begins when the eSIM first connects to a network in the destination country, so installing it at home does not by itself start the destination plan’s validity period.
- On your Android phone, connect to stable internet and open Opera for Android.
- Tap the profile icon and open eSIM.
- Select your destination and the data amount you want. Review the displayed price and plan terms before paying.
- If you choose a paid plan, complete the purchase, then follow the phone’s prompts to install the eSIM.
On arrival, choose the right data SIM
When you reach your destination, turn on Opera’s eSIM and select it as the phone’s mobile-data line in your SIM settings. Also turn off data roaming on your regular SIM. Opera specifically recommends disabling roaming on that line to avoid roaming charges from your home carrier. Opera’s setup instructions do not specify one settings path for every handset, and menu names vary by phone.

Selecting Opera’s eSIM does not guarantee that every possible charge from your home carrier is prevented. The supported precautions are to select the intended mobile-data SIM and disable roaming on the regular SIM. Calls, texts, dual-SIM behavior, and carrier controls can vary; check your phone’s instructions or ask your operator about the exact controls for your device and plan.
Check the allowance, validity, and price before buying
Opera’s September 29, 2026 materials list paid plans of 3GB, 5GB, and 10GB. Each is valid for 30 days after activation in the destination country or until its data is used. Prices vary with destination, plan size, and local currency; Opera displays the price in the browser before payment. Use that current in-app price and terms rather than relying on a general price quoted elsewhere. Opera’s announcement and setup guide describe the plan options.

Opera also advertises 3GB of free data valid for three days in selected markets, with no payment details or email required. Its September 29, 2026 launch materials name the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Canada, United Arab Emirates, Brazil, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Poland for that offer. These are the free-offer markets, not the complete list of places where the eSIM can be used; check the app for current availability.

Top up before you run out of data
Opera says the installed eSIM can be topped up for another destination. A top-up requires an internet connection, so buy one while you still have data or access to stable Wi-Fi. The launch announcement says purchased plans can remain available to activate for up to one year after purchase; the plan’s usage validity begins when it activates in the destination country.
Travel checklist to prevent surprises
- Before departure, confirm eSIM support, unlocked status, Android 10 or newer, and the latest Opera for Android.
- Install the eSIM over stable internet before travel.
- At your destination, set Opera’s eSIM as the mobile-data line.
- Disable data roaming on your regular SIM.
- Review the selected destination, allowance, displayed local-currency price, and validity before purchasing.
- Remember that the eSIM covers the whole phone, so activity outside Opera can use its data.
- Arrange any top-up while internet access is still available.
