The most reliable way to stop impulse-buying a new game is to add a pause between excitement and payment. Put the game on a wishlist, wait a fixed cooling-off period, check independent reviews and unedited gameplay, calculate the complete cost against your budget and backlog, and read the refund conditions before downloading or streaming. Then add account friction: remove saved payment details, require a password, disable in-game purchases where possible, and set a spending limit. Treat virtual currency, downloadable content, subscriptions, season passes and loot boxes as separate purchases rather than part of the advertised base price.
Why a new release feels harder to resist
New games combine several pressure points: novelty, social excitement, persuasive trailers, influencer recommendations, countdown timers and fear of missing out. A sale badge can make a purchase feel financially responsible even when the game will sit unfinished beside a large backlog. A launch-day purchase also happens before you have much evidence about performance, repetitive content, missing features or the real cost of post-launch content.
Digital storefronts make the final step unusually easy. A saved card, one-click checkout or a console that is already signed in removes the small amount of time in which you might reconsider. In-game stores add a second problem: the price may be displayed in tokens rather than currency. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau explains that confusing exchange rates and the separation between buying virtual currency and spending it in a game make real-world spending harder to track. The European Commission likewise says virtual currencies can “psychologically disconnect the act of spending from real-world” money.
There is no reliable general statistic showing how often adults impulse-buy newly released games. Your own rules and account settings are therefore more useful than a claimed average.

Use a pre-purchase gate before paying
Apply the same short process to every new release, regardless of how exciting the announcement is. If a game fails one of the checks, leave it wishlisted rather than buying immediately.
- Name the need. Write one sentence describing the specific gap the game fills: for example, “I want a cooperative campaign for two evenings a week.” If the reason is only “it is new,” “everyone is talking about it” or “the discount ends tonight,” classify the urge as novelty or fear of missing out.
- Check your backlog. List the games you already own but have not started or finished. If two or more already satisfy the same need, the new title must offer a clear difference, not merely a newer trailer.
- Calculate the complete cost. Include the base edition, required online service, likely downloadable content, a season pass, paid currency, subscription fees and any accessory you would need. Use real currency for every item.
- Collect independent evidence. Read both positive and negative reviews, check age and content ratings, and watch representative gameplay rather than only a cinematic trailer.
- Apply your cooling-off rule. Add the game to a wishlist and wait at least 24 hours, or until your next planned budget review. Do not start the timer while the checkout page is open; the point is to leave the buying context.
- Check the exit plan. Read the refund terms for your exact platform and edition before downloading or streaming. A refund may become unavailable after either action.
- Add friction. Remove stored payment details, turn on purchase authentication, disable in-game purchases or set a cap. Make the desired action (buying) slower than the undesired action (closing the store).
Turn excitement into a controlled wishlist decision
Choose a fixed waiting period
A 24-hour wait is a minimum, not a magic number. Use seven days for a full-price release, a longer period for an expensive collector edition, or the date of your next monthly budget review. Record the date you added the game and the reason it interested you. When the period ends, reread that reason without watching new promotional material first.
Separate a genuine fit from a sales prompt

Keep the wishlist useful
Use separate lists for “play soon,” “wait for a sale” and “maybe.” Remove titles that no longer match your interests. A wishlist is a holding area, not a promise to purchase. If the platform sends price alerts, treat the alert as a reminder to run the gate again, not as an instruction to buy.

Verify the game before committing
Read a range of reviews and ratings
The Federal Trade Commission recommends reading online reviews and ratings before buying a game. Look for agreement across several independent outlets and user reports, not a single score. Pay attention to the date and version: launch reviews may not reflect later patches, while a recent review may describe a game that has changed substantially since release.

Read at least one favorable and one critical assessment. Compare comments about performance, accessibility, multiplayer population, save systems, monetization, required connectivity and the amount of content that is actually included. Check the official age and content rating separately; a high critic score does not tell you whether the themes or mechanics suit your household.
Watch representative gameplay
FTC guidance also recommends watching videos of people playing the game. Choose unedited or minimally edited footage that shows the first hour, ordinary combat or exploration, menus and loading behavior. A cinematic trailer can establish tone but cannot show how often the game repeats activities, how intrusive its store is or whether the controls suit you. If you cannot find footage of the platform and edition you would buy, treat that uncertainty as a reason to wait.
Check technical and social requirements
- Confirm the supported console, operating-system version and storage requirement.
- Check whether online play requires a separate platform subscription.
- Verify cross-play and cross-save support if friends use another platform.
- Look for accessibility options that matter to you, such as subtitle controls, remapping or difficulty settings.
- For a live-service game, check whether the servers and player population are available in your region.
Calculate the total cost, not just the box price
Write down the highest realistic cost for the first year, then compare it with the amount left in your entertainment budget and the value of games already waiting in your library. A low launch price can become expensive if it is paired with recurring payments or repeated currency purchases.

Convert every token bundle into a real-currency amount before deciding. If a bundle leaves you with unused tokens, count the unused balance as money already committed, not as a bonus. Do not let a small per-purchase amount hide the total of several transactions.

Add friction to every account that can spend
Use authentication and spending limits
FTC consumer guidance says: “Use parental controls to disable in-app purchases or require a password for all purchases on your phone or tablet.” Its account-control guidance also describes disabling purchases, requiring a password and imposing a dollar limit. These controls are useful for adults as well as children because they interrupt automatic checkout.
- Remove saved cards and payment credentials from storefronts you rarely use.
- Require a password, passcode or biometric confirmation for every purchase, not only purchases above a threshold.
- Set the lowest practical monthly or per-transaction spending limit.
- Disable in-game purchases on the console, phone or tablet when the option exists.
- Use a separate, pre-funded wallet for discretionary game spending instead of an open-ended card.
- Turn off automatic renewal for subscriptions and passes unless you deliberately need them.
Store these settings on every device and family account. A restriction on a phone does not automatically protect a console account, and a child profile may inherit a payment method from the adult account.
Make the password a deliberate interruption
Do not share a short checkout PIN that is already remembered by the device. A password request should give you time to identify the game, the edition and the total. If another household member needs purchasing access, use an individual profile with its own limit rather than handing over the primary account.

Virtual currency, randomized rewards and rotating offers deserve a separate pause because they change how the price feels.

UK guidance calls for clear probability disclosures for paid loot boxes and consumer-friendly defaults, including a £0 spending limit on child accounts. Those recommendations show why a transparent price and a default block are safer than relying on self-control after a purchase prompt appears. Regulators have also highlighted risks to vulnerable consumers; if a child or vulnerable adult uses the account, use the strictest available controls and supervise spending.

Refund eligibility is platform-specific and time-sensitive. Rules can differ by country, marketplace, edition and whether the game has been downloaded or streamed. Open the platform’s current refund page while the game is still unopened, and note the deadline and every condition.
PlayStation example
PlayStation’s published checklist generally requires a request within 14 days for games and downloadable content and says the content must not have been downloaded or streamed. This is an example, not a universal rule. A different marketplace may use another deadline, exclude a pre-order after release, or treat a download as acceptance of the purchase.

- Confirm the refund policy for your country and platform.
- Do not download or stream the game until you have decided to keep it.
- Save the order number, purchase date and edition name.
- If the game is defective, record the error and contact the platform through its stated support route promptly.
- Do not assume a refund is available because another store offered one.
A refund policy is an exit plan, not permission to test every game casually. The safest test is to use a demo, free trial or borrowed copy when one is legitimately available.

Protect children and shared household accounts
Set controls before handing over a device. UK government guidance cited a five-country survey in which 37% of UK parents of children who spend money in video games were using parental controls. That figure is from the cited 2021 survey, not a current measure of all parents, but it illustrates how many purchases can occur without the strongest available account settings.
- Create a child profile instead of allowing play through the adult purchasing profile.
- Set in-app purchases to blocked or require approval for every transaction.
- Use a £0 limit for a child account where the platform provides that default.
- Explain that virtual coins are bought with real money and show the conversion before any approved purchase.
- Review receipts together and remove payment details after a one-time approved purchase.
For shared adult accounts, agree on a monthly household cap and record who approved each purchase. This prevents a saved card from becoming an invisible common budget.
What to do when you already bought impulsively
- Stop additional spending. Close the in-game store, disable purchases and cancel any automatic renewal.
- Check the refund window immediately. Do not download or stream the game while you investigate eligibility.
- List every related charge. Include the base game, currency, DLC and subscription so a small first purchase does not conceal a larger total.
- Request a refund through the platform’s official process if eligible. Keep the confirmation number and avoid repeated chargeback attempts that could affect the account.
- Write the trigger down. Note whether a timer, friend recommendation, sale price or token bundle caused the decision, then add a specific control for that trigger.
- Move the game to a review list. Reconsider it only after the cooling-off period, with the same evidence gate used for any other title.
A practical decision record you can reuse
Keep this short form in a notes app or on paper. Completing it outside the storefront reduces the influence of the checkout design.

Buy only when the answers remain satisfactory after the waiting period and the total fits the budget without borrowing from essentials. If any answer is unknown, the correct action is to wait, not to guess.
