The safest way to buy a ticket is to start at the event, artist, venue or promoter’s official website and follow its ticket link. If the event is sold out, use only a resale service that the event organiser or original ticket issuer identifies as authorised. Before paying, verify the seller, seat, restrictions, delivery method, complete price and refund terms. Keep the transaction on the platform, use a credit card or a payment service with a consumer-dispute process, and never send an unknown seller a bank transfer or cryptocurrency.
No payment method guarantees admission. Save the listing, messages, receipts and ticket file until you have entered the venue; if something goes wrong, contact the official ticket issuer and your payment provider immediately.
The safest buying route in one minute
- Find the event through the artist, venue, promoter or event organiser’s independently verified website.
- Use the official box office or the ticketing link that site publishes.
- For a sold-out show, confirm that any resale service is an authorised partner named by the event or original issuer.
- Check the seller identity, exact seat or standing area, restrictions, delivery method, total price and refund or dispute terms.
- Stop if a stranger creates urgency, offers tickets before the official sale, or asks you to pay outside the platform.
- Pay by credit card or a protected payment service, not by bank transfer, gift card or virtual currency.
- Keep every record and report suspicious activity promptly.
How ticket scams work
Bogus companies and look-alike domains
Fraudsters create convincing ticket-company names, copied logos and domains that differ from a genuine site by a word, punctuation mark or country code. Some advertise events before tickets officially go on sale; others list a concert, match or festival that does not exist. A polished checkout page is not proof that a business is connected to the event.

Scammers use direct messages, comments and marketplace listings to reach fans who missed the primary sale. “Last chance”, “I can transfer it now” and “I am leaving town” stories are designed to make independent checking feel like a risk. An unsolicited message is not an official sales channel, even when the account uses an artist’s photograph or appears to have mutual followers.

Tickets that exist but cannot be used
A buyer may receive an e-ticket that is fake, stolen, cancelled, duplicated or already used. A genuine-looking barcode can belong to somebody else, and a screenshot may not transfer the rights attached to the original booking. The venue’s scanner and ticket issuer—not the file’s appearance—determine whether entry is allowed.
Automation and ticket-limit abuse
The US Federal Trade Commission says automated “bots” can bypass ticket limits by using fake names, addresses and accounts. The Better Online Ticket Sales (BOTS) Act applies to public events at venues with capacity above 200. In enforcement cases announced in 2025 concerning conduct in 2021, brokers agreed to $3.7 million in civil penalties. That enforcement concerns the supply side; it does not make a ticket bought from an unauthorised reseller safe.
The scale of the problem
The UK Home Office recorded about 3,700 gig-ticket fraud reports to Action Fraud in 2024. Almost half involved offers on social media, and people in their twenties represented 27% of victims, according to the Home Office’s 2025 figures. A 2026 UK Home Office and O2 campaign said £150 million had been lost to ticket fraud in the previous year; 14% of surveyed gig-goers said they had bought a fake ticket, and 77% of those purchases were made through online platforms. The figures are UK-specific and should not be treated as a worldwide rate.

A step-by-step buying workflow
1. Begin with the event’s own information
Type the artist, team, venue or promoter’s known website yourself, or use an account you already verified. Look for the event listing and follow its ticket button. Report Fraud advises buying from the venue box office, official promoter or agent, or a well-known ticketing website. Do not rely on a search advertisement, a social-media link or a message that happens to appear first.

2. Confirm that a resale service is authorised
For a sold-out event, check the event page, venue FAQ or original ticket issuer for the named resale partner. Open the resale service from that official information rather than accepting a seller’s link. If the organiser does not identify the service, treat the listing as unverified and contact the organiser through its independently verified website.
3. Inspect the listing before committing
A legitimate listing should make the important terms understandable before payment. Check all of the following:
- Seller identity: who is selling, and whether the platform says the seller is an individual, broker or approved partner.
- Connection to the event: whether the platform discloses its relationship with the organiser or original issuer.
- Location: section, row, seat number or standing-area description. “Great view” without a location is not enough.
- Restrictions: age limits, restricted-view warnings, accessibility requirements, name checks, delivery deadlines and whether the ticket is transferable.
- Delivery: the official app, mobile transfer, collection or another method accepted by the venue. A seller’s promise to email a screenshot is not an official delivery method.
- Total price: face value, service charges, taxes, delivery fees and any mandatory resale fee shown before the final confirmation.
- Refund and dispute terms: who handles a cancellation, a denied transfer or a ticket rejected at the gate.
UK secondary-ticketing guidance expects key information about seller identity, platform or organiser connections, restrictions, seat location and pricing. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has taken action over misleading resale information and required clearer disclosures about ticket identity, restrictions, seat location, price and availability.
4. Challenge implausible availability and pressure
Pause when a seller offers tickets before the official sale opens, claims to have an unlimited supply of a sold-out event, or says you must pay within minutes. Prices far below normal can indicate a fake or unusable ticket; prices far above normal can also be a warning, especially when the listing hides fees or restrictions. Verify the event and seller through a separate browser tab or a phone number published by the venue—not through contact details supplied in the message.

5. Keep checkout and support on-platform
Do not move a conversation to a private payment link, text-message invoice or direct transfer. A seller who says the platform is “broken” or offers a discount for paying separately is removing the records and protections you may need. Pay only in the account and checkout flow you reached from the verified platform. Save the order number immediately.
6. Use a payment method with a dispute route
A credit card can provide a chargeback or card-dispute process under applicable rules. A protected payment service may also offer a buyer dispute mechanism. These options improve the chance of recovery but do not guarantee a refund or entry. Never pay an unknown seller by bank transfer, cash-equivalent gift card or virtual currency; those payments are difficult to reverse. A seller-provided payment link can still be fraudulent even when it displays a familiar logo.
7. Secure the accounts involved
Use a unique password for the ticket account and the email account that receives transfer notices. Turn on two-step verification where available. If you suspect a compromised account, change the password from the ticket issuer’s verified site, sign out other sessions and contact official support. Do not call a number supplied in a suspicious message.

Keep the listing URL, seller profile, screenshots, direct messages, emails, payment reference, confirmation number and ticket file. Do not delete a cancelled listing or a chat after the event. These records help the issuer, platform, card provider and fraud-reporting service establish what happened.

Official sale versus authorised resale
Both channels can be legitimate, but they answer different questions. The primary sale is the original issuer’s allocation; authorised resale transfers an existing booking under the organiser’s rules. Compare the channel using the information available for your event:

The safest option is the channel you can reach from the event’s official information, with payment and support kept inside a verifiable platform.
How to avoid Facebook, Instagram and other social-media scams
- Ignore unsolicited offers. Do not treat a profile, follower count, blue check or mutual friend as proof of ownership.
- Verify independently. Search the event’s official site for its box office and authorised resale partner. Never use the seller’s shortened link or phone number for verification.
- Request the information a real listing should provide. Ask for the exact seat, restrictions, transfer method, total price and written refund terms. A seller who avoids these questions is not offering a verifiable transaction.
- Refuse off-platform payment. “Friends and family,” bank transfer, cryptocurrency and gift cards remove protections and make recovery harder.
- Report and block. Report the account and listing to the social platform, then preserve screenshots before the content disappears.
Social media is not automatically unsafe, but an offer there should be treated as a lead to verify—not as evidence that the ticket is genuine.

Payment choices and what they can—and cannot—do

Use the payment method offered inside the authorised platform, not a separate method suggested in a message. Keep the receipt and the platform’s confirmation of the amount charged.

What to do on the day of the event
Open the ticket through the official app or transfer process as soon as it becomes available. Check the event name, date, venue and seat against your order. Follow the venue’s instructions for mobile brightness, identification and transfer timing. Do not publish the barcode or QR code on social media; another person may copy it. Arrive with the order confirmation and the support contact listed by the official issuer, while recognising that a screenshot is not a substitute for an issuer-approved ticket.
If the ticket is fake, invalid or refused
- Ask the venue or original issuer to record the rejection. Confirm whether the ticket was fake, duplicated, cancelled, stolen, already scanned or incompatible with the event’s transfer rules. Request any available reference number.
- Contact the payment provider immediately. Ask whether a dispute or chargeback applies, what deadline governs it and which evidence is required. Provide the listing, messages, receipt and venue information.
- Report the seller and listing. Use the resale platform or social network’s fraud-reporting process so the account can be reviewed.
- Report to the relevant authority. In the UK, use Report Fraud. Elsewhere, use your national fraud-reporting service or police. Include the payment reference and copies of communications.
- Secure your accounts. Change reused passwords, enable two-step verification and watch bank and email accounts for further unauthorised activity.
Be wary of a second scam after the loss. Someone may claim to be a “recovery agent” who can retrieve the money for an upfront fee. Do not pay them or share more banking credentials; use only the payment provider and official fraud-reporting channels.
UK resale rules and what the proposals mean
In November 2025, the UK Department for Culture, Media and Sport and Department for Business and Trade announced proposals to prohibit resale above the original ticket price plus unavoidable fees, cap platform service fees, require platforms to enforce the cap and prevent individuals from reselling more tickets than they could buy in the original sale. These are UK proposals, not a universal rule and not a substitute for checking the event’s current terms. Readers in other countries should consult their own consumer-protection and ticketing laws.

The CMA’s enforcement work shows why transparent information matters: a resale page should identify the ticket, restrictions, seat location, price and availability rather than relying on vague claims such as “guaranteed entry” or “best seats.” If a platform hides those details until after payment, choose a channel that discloses them before checkout.
A practical stop-or-go checklist
Proceed only when you can answer “yes” to every question below:
- Did I reach the listing from the event, venue, artist or promoter’s official information?
- Does the event or original issuer identify this resale service as authorised?
- Do I know who the seller is and what restrictions apply?
- Are the exact seat or standing details and delivery method clear?
- Is the complete price visible before I pay?
- Can I find the refund and dispute terms without relying on the seller’s message?
- Am I paying inside the platform with a method that may offer a consumer dispute?
- Have I saved the listing and payment records?
If any answer is “no,” stop and verify through the official issuer. Missing a ticket is less costly than sending money to an untraceable seller or being turned away after travel.
Bottom line
Authenticity starts with the sales route, not the appearance of a ticket. Use the event’s official link, treat resale as an authorisation and disclosure check, reject pressure and off-platform payment, and preserve evidence. Those steps cannot remove every risk, but they eliminate the most common paths from a fan’s search to a worthless barcode and give you the strongest practical position if a transaction fails.
