To reduce avoidable risks when investing in Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) shares, verify a broker and its branch through current PSX and SECP records before sending money or identity documents, open and control your own account, and reconcile every trade against official confirmations and account alerts. A genuine broker cannot remove the risk that share prices will fall; registration is not a guarantee against loss or fraud.
First, separate market risk from fraud
A share can lose value even when you bought it through an authorized broker and the trade was handled correctly. That is investment risk, not by itself evidence of a scam. Avoidable risks include dealing with an impersonator, following false “insider” tips, authorizing someone too broadly, or failing to notice trades or account movements you did not expect.
PSX warns that securities are subject to volatility and that brokers are not allowed to raise public deposits on fixed or guaranteed returns. A promise of guaranteed, fixed, risk-free, or extraordinary profits is a warning sign—not, on its own, proof that a particular person committed a crime. See PSX investor protection guidance.
How do I check that a broker is genuine?
- Search official records. Find the firm in PSX’s brokerage firms directory and check its current securities-broker license through the SECP licensing information.
- Verify the exact office or branch. Confirm that the location you plan to visit or contact appears in official records. Do not assume every outlet using a broker’s name is authorized.
- Contact the firm independently. Call a number listed on the official PSX or SECP information, not a number provided only in a social-media post, WhatsApp message, or unsolicited email.
- Match the payment details. Follow transfer instructions confirmed through the verified firm’s official channels. Do not send funds to a person or account that you cannot independently confirm belongs to the broker.
- Check before sharing documents or credentials. A familiar name, logo, influencer, website, or app-store listing does not establish that the service is authorized. Be wary of requests for personal or financial information from unknown contacts.
SECP warned on December 9, 2025, that unlicensed online platforms, websites, and apps were impersonating licensed brokers and using exaggerated or guaranteed-return claims. It said impostors may misuse the identities of brokers, professionals, public figures, and regulators. A November 2024 SECP warning described fake advisory or training offers promoted on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, including paid “insider” tips. Read the dated SECP 2025 warning and SECP 2024 warning.

PSX’s November 2, 2021 alert also described impersonation patterns such as copied logos, lookalike domains, misleading social-media advisers, and WhatsApp groups. It is an older example of tactics, not evidence of current scam prevalence: PSX social-media fraud alert.
Which offers and investment claims should make me pause?
- “Guaranteed,” fixed, risk-free, or extraordinary returns.
- Paid access to supposed insider information or secret tips.
- Pressure to transfer money immediately, keep an offer secret, or act before you can verify the firm.
- Claims that losses are impossible, or that a private group can reliably predict share prices.
- Unsolicited messages or trading platforms that use a broker’s or regulator’s identity but cannot be verified through official records.
Do not invest because a market is rising, other people are buying, or a contact says a tip cannot fail. Check public company information and risks, and make decisions in light of your own financial position and tolerance for loss. PSX sets out further investor dos and don’ts.

How should I control account authority?
Open the account in your own name and operate it yourself where possible. If you need another person to act for you, provide the broker with written, limited authorization and keep a copy. Avoid casually granting broad authority or sharing login credentials.
PSX warns that an authorized person’s instructions can result in trades for which the customer remains responsible, and that delegated authority may be misused. Its Investor Awareness Guide states: “No PSX Broker is allowed under any circumstance to make unauthorized use of Customers’ funds and securities for their own purpose/ benefit.” Read the PSX Investor Awareness Guide and monitor the account even when someone else has permission to act.

How can I spot an unauthorized trade or account problem?
- Keep your contact details current. Make sure your identity and contact information are accurate in your broker, Central Depository Company (CDC), and National Clearing Company of Pakistan Limited (NCCPL) records so that notices can reach you.
- Review each trade confirmation. Compare the broker’s confirmation with the order you placed, including the shares, quantity, price, and transaction details. Follow up on a missing confirmation or any discrepancy.
- Watch cash and holdings. Check balances and share positions, and review CDC-posted reports and transaction alerts from CDC and NCCPL. PSX describes NCCPL’s UIN Information System as a way for investors to view their trading and settlement information.
- Keep records as you go. Save account-opening documents, written instructions, confirmations, statements, alerts, and relevant messages. They can help you identify what happened and support a complaint.
PSX says brokers must segregate customer funds and securities from their own assets and must not use them for their own benefit. It also describes a CDC Investor Account and NCCPL National Custodial Services or Direct Settlement Services as options investors can investigate for holding or settling assets through those institutions. These options are not stated as a universal requirement or a guarantee against loss.
What should I do if a trade is missing, wrong, or unauthorized?
- Contact the broker promptly. For a missing or discrepant contract note, PSX’s guide says to inform the broker within one trading day. Provide the relevant order and account details, retain your message, and ask for a written response or correction.
- Escalate an unresolved issue to PSX. If the broker does not respond or rectify the matter, contact PSX Regulatory Affairs Division. The PSX guide lists investor.complaints@psx.com.pk for complaints.
- Use the prescribed dispute process. Unresolved broker disputes may be taken through PSX’s complaint and arbitration process.
- Consider a complaint to SECP. SECP’s investor complaints page says complainants should first raise the issue with the relevant forum and advises prompt filing. Rules may impose filing limits, often two years, but the applicable limit can differ; check current requirements rather than relying on a general timeframe.
What does the PSX compensation fund cover?
PSX’s Centralized Customers Protection Compensation Fund (CCPF), formerly called the Investor Protection Fund, may pay an admitted claim against a broker declared a defaulter, subject to its prescribed process and available funds. PSX states a maximum of PKR 1,000,000 per claimant for an admitted claim against a defaulter stockbroker. This is a conditional cap, not automatic reimbursement for every fraud allegation or ordinary investment loss. It does not protect you if a share price falls. Check the current CCPF terms and claim requirements before relying on eligibility or the cap.

How should I compare brokers?
Do not treat a broker as “safest” based on a ranking without evidence. Compare the facts you can verify directly:
