If the screen goes black at every episode change, start with the handoff: make sure the next video is ready and the playout software is set to continue into it instead of stopping at the outgoing clip’s end. If black appears unpredictably during an episode, investigate the encoder, upload connection, platform, and affected viewers instead. Those patterns point to different problems and need different fixes.
First, identify when the black screen happens
Note whether the screen goes black only between episodes, at the same point within one file, unpredictably during several files, or only for some viewers. Ask affected viewers whether audio continues, whether other streams play normally, and what device and network they use.
- At every episode boundary: check whether the outgoing clip stops at its end point and whether the next item is ready to play.
- At a repeatable point within one episode: inspect that file for a freeze, missing video, or damaged section.
- At unpredictable times across episodes: check encoder status, network upload, and platform messages.
- For only some viewers: compare devices and connections before changing the production setup.
A transition that fails at each boundary is not the same fault as a stream that drops frames mid-episode. Fix the repeatable handoff first; use encoder and viewer-side checks for the other patterns.
Fix the episode handoff before going live
- Open the actual playlist or media bin. Confirm that the next episode is in the intended order, is available to the playout system, and is not still uploading or processing.
- Check what happens at the outgoing clip’s end. Look for a setting that stops or pauses playback at the clip’s OUT point versus one that automatically continues or transitions to the next item. Labels vary by software.
- Choose the intended transition behavior. In Livestream Studio, for example, “Pause Playback” stops at the OUT point without transitioning; “Continue Playback” automatically transitions there. This is specific to Livestream Studio, not a universal setting name.
- Prepare a holding visual if your workflow supports one. A suitable branded or age-appropriate visual can cover unavoidable preparation time, but it does not replace fixing a playlist that stops or a file that is not ready.
- Run a test event through a complete handoff. Watch the end of one episode, the transition, and the start of the next. Testing only the middle of each file will not reveal a boundary fault.

Check the video files and their processing state
Play every source file locally from beginning to end. Look for frozen or black frames, missing audio or video, abrupt interruptions, or an unexpected end. Then confirm that the playout service has finished uploading and processing each file and that the file’s format is supported by that service.
Resolution, frame rate, scan type, and codec can affect compatibility. Livestream Studio notes that project and media mismatches can trigger transcoding; check the documentation and project settings for the software you actually use rather than assuming one format works everywhere.
OneStream Live’s help page recommends MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, constant 30 or 60 FPS, and 720p or 1080p for its own prerecorded-stream workflow. Those are OneStream-specific recommendations, not universal specifications. Its checklist also recommends testing the event. See OneStream Live’s troubleshooting guide.

If blackouts happen during episodes, inspect the stream path
When the failure is intermittent or occurs mid-episode, check the encoder and platform status, then compare encoder output with the viewer symptom. A brief delay before a new stream becomes playable can be normal; Cloudflare’s documentation puts it this way: “There is a brief delay between when your encoder connects and the stream becomes playable.” That connection delay does not explain a black screen at every episode boundary.

Keyframe interval advice varies by platform. Cloudflare’s troubleshooting documentation, last updated July 30, 2026, describes a 2–8-second range, suggests 4 seconds as a starting point, and advises adjusting based on observed latency or buffering. Flowplayer recommends two seconds for its own service and separately identifies encoder or hardware problems as possible causes of stream symptoms. Do not combine those recommendations into a universal setting: use your destination’s current guidance and test changes one at a time.
Check the encoder’s logs and output for dropped frames, stalled output, or an unexpected disconnect. Cloudflare also recommends examining the upload-to-duration ratio. Its troubleshooting guidance says operators with upload speed below 20 Mbps commonly troubleshoot by restarting the router, trying Ethernet instead of Wi‑Fi, or contacting the ISP. The 20 Mbps figure is Cloudflare guidance, not a universal minimum for every stream.

Ethernet is worth testing if Wi‑Fi or the uplink appears unstable. A wired connection cannot fix a missing transition, an unprocessed file, or a stop-at-end setting.

Rule out a viewer-side playback issue
If only particular viewers report a black screen, ask them to test another supported device or network, adjust playback quality if the player offers it, and restart or update the app or device. YouTube’s viewer guidance recommends these checks for streaming and video problems: Troubleshoot streaming and video issues.

YouTube also notes that its Primetime Channels TV broadcast-delay setting trades delay against buffer: less delay leaves less buffer and makes interruptions more likely. That applies to that viewing context; it is not an explanation for a producer-side black frame at each episode handoff.
