You can automate playlist updates by generating a fresh FFmpeg concat file on a schedule, replacing it safely, and arranging for FFmpeg to restart or otherwise consume the new list. But do not assume an already-running FFmpeg concat input reloads a changed file: the FFmpeg documentation does not promise that behavior. Test the exact refresh method, FFmpeg build, media, and YouTube session before relying on it unattended.
How the playlist-update workflow works
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads an ordered text script of media files. A scheduler or file watcher can build that script from your podcast library; a separate, tested mechanism must then make the running encoder use the updated list. Looping the input repeats the playlist, but does not by itself automate library management or prove that a running process will reload a changed script.
The workflow has four parts: eligible episode files, a concat playlist, an FFmpeg process that sends the output to YouTube Live, and automation that refreshes the playlist and handles process recovery.
Create a concat playlist
A basic script looks like this:
ffconcat version 1.0
file '/path/to/episode-001.mp4'
file '/path/to/episode-002.mp4'
Keep ffconcat version 1.0 exactly at the beginning of the first line when using the recognized ffconcat format. Use paths that exist on the machine running FFmpeg. Prefer paths permitted by the concat demuxer’s safe-path rules; avoid -safe 0 unless you specifically need paths outside those rules. Never put a YouTube stream key in the playlist.

The concat demuxer expects input files to have matching streams, codecs, and time bases. Different episode formats or inaccurate duration metadata can cause artifacts, gaps, or timestamp problems at transitions. Normalize or re-encode incompatible files to a consistent layout, then test actual episode boundaries, including audio transitions.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i /path/to/playlist.ffconcat
-c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMP_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"
-stream_loop -1 requests indefinite input looping. The example re-encodes video with H.264 and audio with AAC; stream-copying is not a safe universal shortcut when the clips have mismatched streams or codecs. Confirm the output container, protocol, and codecs are accepted by the stream configuration in YouTube Studio. Use the stream URL and key provided by YouTube, and treat the key like a password: do not expose it in a public script, shell history, logs, or examples.
Choose ingest settings for the actual stream
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS; supports H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio; recommends constant bitrate encoding; and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so consult YouTube’s current table rather than copying a bitrate without checking the intended format and available upload capacity. YouTube also recommends running a speed test to check upload bitrate. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Automate playlist updates without assuming live reload
- Build the next playlist. Have a scheduled job or file watcher select eligible episodes and write them in the desired order. Validate that every referenced file exists and is ready to read.
- Replace the playlist safely. Write the new contents to a temporary file, then replace the previous playlist atomically where the operating system permits. This prevents FFmpeg or another reader from seeing a half-written script.
- Choose how FFmpeg will consume the change. The concat documentation describes reading scripts; it does not establish that a running demuxer reloads a modified script. Test a specific approach, such as restarting FFmpeg at a clip boundary or having a supervisor launch a new process. Do not rely on live reload unless it has been verified for the exact FFmpeg version and deployment.
- Test YouTube continuity. A restart may interrupt output or affect the live session. Test reconnect and session behavior with the real stream configuration before depending on the method for a continuous broadcast.
- Supervise and observe the encoder. Use a process manager or equivalent restart logic, capture logs, and alert if FFmpeg stops or reports encoder errors. The right supervisor and reconnect settings depend on the host; no single configuration is established for every setup.
Compare refresh approaches by whether a new episode enters at a clean boundary, whether a restart interrupts the YouTube session, how complex the implementation is, and what happens after failure. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and video, monitoring stream health, and verifying the local archive. For unattended operation, also test a playlist update, FFmpeg crash and restart, network interruption, and YouTube session end before deployment. See YouTube’s guidance on managing live streams.
Plan around YouTube archives and DVR
YouTube says, “If your live stream is less than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive it for you,” and warns, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” It recommends recording a local archive as a backup. A single uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast is therefore not a dependable archive strategy: keep a separate local recording and decide whether and how to split or restart live sessions if YouTube archives matter. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

For very long streams, YouTube says rewind may be limited and DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If listeners expect to pause or rewind a round-the-clock podcast, make that limitation clear. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot common failures
- The new episode does not appear: The active concat input may not have reloaded the changed script. Check the playlist on disk, then use the tested restart or supervisor method instead of assuming live reload.
- FFmpeg cannot open a file: Check that the path is valid on the encoder host, the file is readable, and the playlist syntax is correct. If using
-safe 0, remember that it relaxes the safe-path rules; use it only when needed. - Transitions have gaps, artifacts, or audio problems: Check stream layouts, codecs, time bases, and duration metadata across the input files. Normalize incompatible episodes and test transitions again.
- The stream disconnects on restart: A playlist-refresh restart can affect the YouTube session. Test reconnect and session behavior before scheduling restarts, and monitor stream health during rollout.
- The stream stops without recovery: Check FFmpeg logs and the process supervisor, then test the recovery path after an encoder crash, network interruption, and YouTube session end.
- The YouTube archive is missing or rewind is unavailable: A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured, and DVR features may be limited or unavailable. Keep a separate local recording and plan session length around archive and rewind needs.
