YouTube can show the event as upcoming so viewers can choose Notify me; for an encoder stream, YouTube sends its live notification after the stream is public and YouTube detects that you are live. This does not automatically publish a separate Community post or a post on another social network.
What YouTube does automatically
Scheduling a YouTube live stream creates an upcoming event page. Subscribers may see it in their subscriptions feed and can opt into a reminder by selecting Notify me. YouTube’s built-in live notification is separate: for an encoder stream, it is sent after the stream is public and YouTube detects the broadcast is live. A scheduled event alone is not the same as a live notification.
These features notify people within YouTube. They do not automatically publish a Community post or announce the stream on another social network. YouTube’s Live Streaming API can manage broadcasts programmatically, but its documented broadcast features are not evidence of a general cross-platform posting function.
Schedule a stream and let viewers set a reminder
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then open the Manage tab.
- Choose the option to schedule a stream. Enter the title, start time, and privacy setting, then save the event.
- Copy the scheduled watch-page link and share it ahead of time. YouTube recommends sharing the link at least 48 hours before the event.
- Ask viewers to open the event and select Notify me. The reminder is viewer-controlled; it depends on the viewer’s notification settings and does not guarantee attendance.
- At the scheduled time, start sending video through your encoder, or start the webcam stream. Complete the Live Control Room’s go-live step if your setup requires it.
YouTube’s guidance says a scheduled stream may appear in subscribers’ feeds as upcoming. A public scheduled event that has not begun ingesting an encoder feed should not be mistaken for a broadcast that is already live.

Set privacy and understand who receives alerts
Public streams
For YouTube’s public-live notification behavior, make the stream public. For encoder streams, YouTube says notifications go to eligible subscribers after the stream is public and it detects that the creator is live. You cannot ensure that every subscriber receives an alert immediately: delivery depends on subscriber choices, YouTube personalization, and account or device settings.
Unlisted streams
Unlisted live streams do not send subscriber notifications. They are useful when you want to share a watch link without making the stream public, but they do not provide the public notification behavior described above.
Viewer notification settings and limits
- For live alerts, viewers need to have selected All notifications for your channel and have YouTube notifications enabled for their account and device.
- YouTube limits a channel to 3 notifications in a 24-hour period across uploads, live streams, and Premieres, according to YouTube Help guidance current in 2026.
- A channel can send 1 Community post notification in a 3-day period, according to the same 2026 guidance. A Community post is distinct from the automatic live notification.
- Some subscribers receive personalized notifications later than publication. Account, device, and app settings can also prevent delivery.
The upload notification checkbox does not turn off public live-stream notifications. YouTube states that public live-stream video notifications cannot be disabled through that checkbox.

If you mean an automatic Community or external social post
YouTube’s scheduled event and subscriber notification are not the same as publishing a separate announcement. The YouTube Live Streaming API supports creating and managing broadcasts, including a title, scheduled start time, privacy status, and broadcast lifecycle settings. API write operations require user authorization. The API documentation does not establish a general feature for creating a Community announcement or posting to other social platforms.

YouTube’s promotion guidance says a stream archive is uploaded automatically by default and recommends making the archive public to expand reach. Saving mobile-stream Short highlights has separate eligibility and format limits; that guidance should not be assumed to apply to every stream.

Troubleshooting missed notifications
- The scheduled event appeared, but nobody got a live alert: confirm the stream is public, the encoder is sending video, and YouTube has detected that the broadcast is live. A scheduled event by itself does not trigger the encoder live notification.
- Some subscribers received an alert and others did not: viewers may not have enabled All notifications, YouTube notifications, or device alerts. Personalized delivery can also be delayed, and the channel may have reached its notification limit.
- The stream is unlisted: unlisted live streams do not send subscriber notifications. Change the privacy setting if public alerts are your aim.
- You expected a Community post or an external announcement: YouTube’s live scheduling and notification behavior does not create those separate posts. Publish an announcement separately or configure and verify an authorized workflow for the platform you intend to use.
- You expected an upload notification toggle to control live alerts: that setting does not disable public live-stream notifications.
