IFTTT can connect a WordPress publishing event to a social action—or send selected social content back to WordPress—using an Applet that pairs a trigger with an action. Choose the direction and content type first, confirm the exact options and account requirements on IFTTT, then authorize the accounts and test the workflow with a low-risk post. Integrations differ: a connection for one network or content type does not mean every social action is supported.

Choose the direction of the automation

Decide which service should start the workflow. WordPress-to-social is useful when a new blog post should prompt a social update. Social-to-WordPress is useful for bringing a supported photo or other item into a WordPress post. IFTTT describes its WordPress integration as a way to publish on a blog and automatically share posts across social media; available pairings and actions depend on the services involved.

Workflow Example listed by IFTTT What to verify
WordPress → Facebook IFTTT lists WordPress post triggers and actions alongside Facebook status and photo triggers. Facebook–WordPress integration Check which trigger and action are currently available for your connected accounts; the listing does not establish that every combination is offered.
WordPress → X IFTTT lists options for sending new WordPress posts to X. X–WordPress integration Review the current action and the content it will publish before enabling it.
Instagram → WordPress IFTTT lists an Instagram “Any new photo by you” trigger paired with a WordPress “Create a photo post” action. Instagram–WordPress integration IFTTT says an Instagram business account is required to use Instagram with IFTTT.
WordPress → Buffer queue IFTTT documents sending new WordPress posts to a Buffer queue. Buffer–WordPress integration Confirm that the Buffer channel you intend to use supports the account and publishing action you need.

Build and test an IFTTT Applet

An Applet links a trigger (the event that starts it) to an action (what IFTTT does next). The exact controls and field names can vary by service and account, so use the choices shown on the live integration page rather than assuming a recipe supports a particular format.

  1. Pick the service pair. Open the relevant IFTTT connection page, such as IFTTT’s WordPress page, and confirm it lists the direction you want.
  2. Choose a trigger and action. For example, a WordPress-to-social Applet may start when a new post appears and then share it; a supported Instagram-to-WordPress option can start with a new photo and create a WordPress photo post. Read the specific option descriptions before proceeding.
  3. Connect and authorize accounts. Sign in to WordPress and the other service when prompted, and review the access being requested. For Instagram, make sure the account meets IFTTT’s business-account requirement.
  4. Set the Applet fields and review its output. Check which post details, text, or media will be passed to the destination, and adjust available fields so the resulting update is appropriate for that service.
  5. Enable it and run a low-risk test. Publish or trigger a test item, then check the destination to confirm the result. If it does not appear as expected, inspect the Applet’s selected trigger and action, account connection, and configured fields before relying on it for routine publishing.

Allow for polling delays

IFTTT’s Facebook–WordPress and Instagram–WordPress integration descriptions list polling checks every five minutes for Pro and Pro+ users and every hour for Free users. These are stated check intervals, not guarantees of end-to-end delivery time: a check may find an event, but the complete action can take longer. If a social post must appear at a precise moment, do not treat a polling Applet as a real-time guarantee.

Use Buffer when you want a queue

Immediate cross-posting and scheduling are different workflows. With the documented WordPress-to-Buffer option, a new post can be sent to a Buffer queue instead of being published immediately by a direct social action. Buffer describes its service as supporting scheduling, publishing, and analysis across social channels; each channel represents one connected social account, and queued posts are assigned to one channel at a time. Check the intended channel and its current publishing support before building a calendar around it. See IFTTT’s Buffer service page.

Check these details before relying on automation

  • Supported content: Verify whether the action handles the post, status, or photo you intend to share. Do not infer video or other media support from a different content type’s listing.
  • Direction: Confirm that the integration runs from the source service to the destination you want; a WordPress-to-social option is not the same as importing social content into WordPress.
  • Account eligibility and access: Confirm required account types and authorize only the connected services needed for the Applet. IFTTT specifically identifies an Instagram business account as necessary for its Instagram integration.
  • Timing: Account for the listed polling interval where applicable and allow for total processing time beyond the check itself.
  • Publishing behavior: Decide whether you want a direct action or a queue, then confirm exactly where and how the destination will publish.
  • Maintenance: Service integrations, account eligibility, polling descriptions, and plan details can change. Recheck the live pages before depending on a workflow for regular publishing.
