To automate website screenshot reports in Google Sheets, list one page URL per row, use Google Apps Script to request a screenshot from Microlink, write the returned screenshot URL and status into the sheet, and schedule the script with an installable time-driven trigger. You can keep each result as a link or insert the public image into the sheet.
The example below is a documentation-based starting point, not a tested script. Confirm Microlink’s current request options and service limits before using it for a production report.
How the workflow fits together
Google Sheets holds the target URLs and report fields. Apps Script reads those rows, sends each URL to Microlink’s API, parses the response, and writes the screenshot asset URL back to the matching row. A time-driven trigger can run the refresh function on a recurring schedule.
For a simple report, use columns like these:
| Column | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Page URL | The website page to capture; use one URL per row. |
| Captured at | When the script attempted the capture. |
| Screenshot URL | The screenshot asset URL returned by Microlink. |
| Status | Whether the request succeeded or failed. |
| Notes | Optional diagnostic details, such as an HTTP error. |
Microlink documents a screenshot URL in data.screenshot.url. Its screenshot guide covers viewport captures, full-page captures, element targeting, and image types: Microlink’s screenshot guide.

Set up the sheet and Apps Script
-
Create a Google Sheet with the headers shown above in row 1. Put each page URL in column A, starting in row 2.
-
Open Extensions > Apps Script in the spreadsheet.
-
Paste the function below into the editor. Replace the example API endpoint or parameters only if Microlink’s current documentation requires a different request format for your account or chosen capture options.
-
Save the project, select
refreshScreenshots, and run it once from the editor. Google will prompt you to authorize the script. Apps Script’s URL Fetch service can make HTTP and HTTPS requests; the script may require external-request authorization, as well as permission to edit the spreadsheet. -
Check the sheet for a timestamp, screenshot URL, and status on each URL row. Then create a time-driven trigger as described below.

Apps Script example
function refreshScreenshots() {
const sheet = SpreadsheetApp.getActiveSpreadsheet().getActiveSheet();
const lastRow = sheet.getLastRow();
if (lastRow < 2) return;
const rows = sheet.getRange(2, 1, lastRow - 1, 5).getValues();
const now = new Date();
rows.forEach((row, index) => {
const pageUrl = String(row[0] || '').trim();
const sheetRow = index + 2;
if (!pageUrl) return;
try {
const endpoint = 'https://api.microlink.io/';
const query = {
url: pageUrl,
screenshot: true
};
const queryString = Object.keys(query)
.map(key => encodeURIComponent(key) + '=' + encodeURIComponent(query[key]))
.join('&');
const response = UrlFetchApp.fetch(endpoint + '?' + queryString, {
muteHttpExceptions: true
});
const statusCode = response.getResponseCode();
const body = response.getContentText();
if (statusCode < 200 || statusCode >= 300) {
sheet.getRange(sheetRow, 2, 1, 4).setValues([[now, '', 'HTTP error ' + statusCode, body.slice(0, 500)]]);
return;
}
const result = JSON.parse(body);
const screenshotUrl = result && result.data && result.data.screenshot
? result.data.screenshot.url
: '';
if (!screenshotUrl) {
sheet.getRange(sheetRow, 2, 1, 4).setValues([[now, '', 'No screenshot URL', body.slice(0, 500)]]);
return;
}
sheet.getRange(sheetRow, 2, 1, 4).setValues([[now, screenshotUrl, 'OK', '']]);
} catch (error) {
sheet.getRange(sheetRow, 2, 1, 4).setValues([[now, '', 'Script error', String(error).slice(0, 500)]]);
}
});
}
This example makes one request per non-empty URL on every run. If the API returns a different response shape or requires different screenshot parameter syntax, adjust the request and parsing to match Microlink’s current API documentation. For larger sheets, consider processing a bounded number of rows per run so that requests and spreadsheet writes fit within the service quotas.

Choose what the screenshot captures
Viewport, full page, or a specific element
A default capture is appropriate when the report should show what appears in the browser viewport. Use full-page capture when the whole document matters, or element targeting when the report is focused on a known component. Microlink’s screenshot guide describes these capture choices and image-type options; the exact request parameters should follow its current documentation.
Wait for dynamic content when needed
Pages that render after JavaScript runs may need a readiness condition before capture. Microlink’s dynamic-content screenshot guide describes waiting for a selector and using click or scroll interactions. Prefer a condition tied to the page’s real content over an arbitrary fixed delay, which can be too short on a slow load and unnecessarily long on a fast one. The guide reviewed for this article reports request timeouts of 30 seconds on the free plan and 60 seconds on Pro; verify current limits before depending on long waits.
Microlink also documents browser interactions in its Browser Automation feature information. A capture that depends on login state, consent handling, or page interaction needs deliberate configuration; do not assume a basic screenshot request reproduces every user’s browser session.

The simplest report stores the returned URL in the Screenshot URL column. This keeps the sheet compact and lets readers open the asset separately.
To display the screenshot in a cell, use Google Sheets’ image formula with the URL, for example =IMAGE(C2) if the screenshot URL is in column C. For an Apps Script-managed image, Google’s Spreadsheet class includes insertImage(url, column, row), which requires a publicly accessible image URL. The blob-based insertion method has a 2 MB maximum. Inserting a new image on every refresh can clutter the sheet, so a URL column or a carefully managed image area is often easier to maintain.

Schedule recurring captures
Use an installable time-driven trigger to run refreshScreenshots on a recurring basis. In Apps Script, open Triggers (the clock icon), choose Add Trigger, select the function, choose Time-driven as the event source, then select the interval and schedule. Google’s installable triggers guide says these triggers can run as often as every minute or as infrequently as monthly.
Two scheduling details matter for reports:
-
The trigger runs using the authorization of the account that created it. Keep that account active and authorized, and document who owns the automation so it can be maintained if that person’s access changes.

A selected hourly schedule does not guarantee an exact minute: Google says trigger time can be randomized within the chosen hour. Design the report around an acceptable window rather than treating the trigger as a precise scheduler.
Plan around Microlink and Apps Script limits
Capacity depends on both the screenshot service plan and Google Apps Script quotas. Microlink’s API page, reviewed on October 3, 2026, lists 25 requests per day on its free tier and a Pro configuration with 46,000 requests per month at $49 per month. The same page reports a 99.9% uptime SLA for paid plans; that figure does not apply to the free tier. Terms can change, so check Microlink’s current API page before committing to a volume or schedule.
Google for Developers’ Apps Script quotas page, reviewed in 2026, lists these daily limits:

| Quota | Consumer account | Google Workspace account |
|---|---|---|
| URL Fetch calls per day | 20,000 | 100,000 |
| Trigger runtime per day | 90 minutes | 6 hours |
Google says quotas vary by account type and may change. These are Google’s listed limits, not a promise that every script can use the full allowance for screenshot work: other scripts or services in the account can consume capacity. Estimate daily calls as the number of non-empty URLs multiplied by runs per day, and leave room for retries and other automation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTroubleshoot failed or incomplete reports
-
Authorization prompt or authorization error: Run the function manually from the editor and approve the requested permissions. Confirm the creator account can edit the spreadsheet and make external requests through Apps Script.
-
HTTP error in the status column: Check the returned status and response text. Verify the page URL and Microlink request options, then compare the request with the current API documentation. The example records a short response excerpt to help identify the failure.
-
Missing screenshot URL: The request may have succeeded at the HTTP layer but returned an unexpected JSON shape or no screenshot data. Inspect the response and update the parser to match the current API response.
-
Screenshot is blank or misses content: The target page may render content asynchronously. Add an appropriate selector wait or documented interaction, and allow enough request time for the page’s behavior. A fixed delay is not a guarantee that the page is ready.

Frequently asked questions
Can a spreadsheet update only when someone changes a URL?
This example refreshes rows when its function runs. A recurring trigger is one way to run it automatically; choose an event-driven design only if it fits the update behavior you need and the relevant Apps Script trigger limitations.
Does the trigger run at an exact scheduled minute?
No. Google says an hourly time-driven trigger may run at a randomized time within that hour, so treat it as a recurring window rather than a precise appointment.
