Playwright can capture a search results page as a viewport image, a full-page image, or a screenshot of one selected element. But browser capability is not permission to automate a search engine: Google says automated queries and scraping its results without express permission violate its policies and Terms of Service. Use an explicitly permitted route, obtain permission where applicable, or practise the capture workflow on a page you control.
Check whether automated searches are permitted
Before sending automated searches, review the current terms and policies of the provider whose results you want to capture. Google’s published spam policies say machine-generated traffic includes automated queries, including scraping search results for rank checks or other automated access to Google Search without express permission. Playwright does not change that rule or provide a way around access controls.
This Google-specific policy should not be generalized to every search provider. The rules for other engines or SERP providers are not established here; check the relevant provider’s current terms and any applicable permissions before automating requests. The code below illustrates Playwright’s screenshot mechanics for a permitted target, not authorization to navigate to a live search results page.
Capture a permitted page with Playwright
Playwright’s Page API includes screenshot support, so a separate capture product is not required for this workflow. Set the browser context before navigation when viewport dimensions matter, navigate to a permitted URL, wait for a state relevant to your own page or authorized integration, then capture the desired region.

The right wait condition depends on the page and authorized use case: a generic load event does not establish that a dynamic results page is fully rendered or stable. Wait for an application-relevant state, and handle consent or interstitial screens only in ways allowed by the provider.

Make screenshots comparable between runs
A screenshot records a particular rendered context, not a universal view of search rankings. Google notes that results can depend on factors including location, language, and device. For useful comparisons, keep relevant browser conditions consistent and record the context alongside each image.

- Set a known viewport in the context before navigation.
- Use the same browser, viewport, locale, and other relevant settings between captures.
- Choose output scale intentionally:
scale: 'css'produces one output pixel per CSS pixel;scale: 'device'uses device-pixel resolution. - Record the query, capture timestamp, locale and location assumptions, device or viewport, browser, and scale with the artifact.
For example, add scale: 'device' to the screenshot options when device-pixel resolution is the intended output. The image dimensions will differ from CSS-pixel output. The Page API also documents format, animation, and masking controls; choose them according to the downstream comparison or archive workflow rather than assuming every run needs the same settings. Troubleshoot capture problems
- The image misses content below the fold: default screenshots capture the viewport. Use
fullPage: truewhen you need the entire scrollable document. - The full-page image is too large: full-page dimensions depend on the document height. Capture the viewport or a specific locator when a focused artifact better serves the comparison.
- Images differ in size between runs: check viewport dimensions and whether you selected CSS-pixel or device-pixel scale. Set the viewport in the context before navigation and hold the relevant settings constant.
- The capture is blank or shows an interstitial: the target may not have reached the state your workflow requires, or access may be restricted. Wait for an application-relevant state on a permitted page; do not use automation to bypass a provider’s controls.
- An element screenshot fails or captures the wrong area: confirm that the locator matches the intended element on the page and is available at capture time. No universal selector is established for live SERPs.
- Results change despite identical screenshot settings: the underlying search context may vary. Preserve the query, time, location assumptions, language, device, viewport, and browser details; an image alone does not establish an objective rank independent of context.

Do Playwright screenshots require a separate screenshot API?
No. Playwright’s Page API has built-in viewport, full-page, and locator screenshot methods. A separate API is an alternative when you prefer a hosted capture workflow.
