The efficient way to automate resource production is to build one dependable chain from extraction through transport, processing, buffering, and delivery, then expand only the stage that limits the chain. Start with the resource you carry most often, secure continuous power, balance machine input and output rates, and use buffers and modular layouts to isolate problems. This approach applies across factory-building RPGs, including games where mining nodes, belts, machines, fuel, pollution, or logistics systems impose different constraints.
If you are asking what should I automate first in a factory game?, automate the repeated raw-resource loop that feeds your next important recipe. A small line that runs continuously is more valuable than a large, unbalanced base that frequently starves, backs up, or loses power.
What efficient automation actually means
Efficiency is not simply the highest possible item count per minute. A factory is efficient when its resources, machines, transport, energy, storage, and demand remain aligned with little manual intervention. A fast assembler fed by an empty belt is not productive; neither is a miner that fills storage while the finished item is never used.

Your first objective is to remove the most repetitive hand-carrying from that chain. Your second is to identify the limiting stage. The limit may be an impure resource node, a low-tier miner, a saturated belt, an underpowered generator network, an assembler with an unfavorable recipe ratio, insufficient storage, or a lack of demand. Adding machines before identifying that limit usually increases clutter without increasing useful output.
The Factorio Wiki captures the central promise of this genre: “We really want to be able to set the factory to make things and let it go.” Automation achieves that promise only when every dependency in the chain is reliable.
Map one production chain before building a megabase
Choose one product that you need repeatedly, such as building materials, ammunition, science items, or another progression resource. Write down every stage between the source and the destination. Include fuel and power as dependencies rather than treating them as invisible infrastructure.
- Name the final item. Identify where it is consumed and whether demand is continuous or occasional.
- List the intermediate recipe. Record the inputs, outputs, crafting time, and machine required for each step.
- Trace back to raw resources. Include ore, stone, biomass, water, fuel, or any other source item.
- Mark manual work. Circle the stage that currently requires the most repeated walking, hand-mining, hand-crafting, or refilling.
- Automate that stage first. Connect it to the next stage with a clear transport path and observe the line before adding more capacity.
This map prevents a common mistake: automating a downstream machine while its upstream input is still collected manually. It also exposes hidden dependencies. A metal-plate line may appear complete until its power generators need a fuel loop, or until a later component consumes the same plates faster than the first product does.
Secure extraction and continuous power
Use the strongest practical extraction method
Extraction sets the ceiling for the entire chain. In Factorio, electric mining drills replace slower fuel-dependent burner drills and can output directly to belts. That change removes a refueling task and makes the mine easier to connect to a central power network. In Satisfactory, output varies with node purity and miner mark, so two apparently identical deposits may not provide the same supply.
Place miners so their output has a short, unambiguous path to the first processing block. A belt that crosses several unrelated lines is difficult to diagnose and easy to overload. If the game permits direct insertion into a machine, use it where that reduces transport complexity; otherwise, leave room for belt merges, splitters, and maintenance access.
Treat energy as its own production chain
Automation collapses when energy is intermittent. Model power or fuel as another chain with an input, processing stage, buffer, and distribution network. Keep fuel production and generators close enough to inspect, but separate enough that a backed-up product line cannot hide a power failure.

- Check that generators receive fuel or another required input continuously.
- Leave capacity for startup surges and future machines instead of operating at the edge of the grid.
- When every machine stops together, inspect power before rebuilding belts or assemblers.
- For fuel systems, add storage deliberately so a short production interruption does not immediately shut down the factory.
Power reliability is a prerequisite, not a late optimization. A perfectly balanced recipe still produces nothing if its energy source is sporadic.
Balance machine rates instead of guessing
Write the input and output rate for each machine, then compare adjacent stages. If one machine consumes an ingredient faster than the upstream stage produces it, the downstream machine will eventually starve. If the upstream stage produces more than the next stage can consume, its output will back up and may block the machine.
Use a simple rate check:
- Available input: extraction rate multiplied by the number of active sources, limited by transport capacity.
- Machine demand: recipe input per cycle divided by cycle time, multiplied by the number of machines.
- Machine output: recipe output per cycle divided by cycle time, multiplied by the number of machines.
- Effective line rate: the smallest sustained rate among extraction, transport, processing, energy, and demand.
You do not need a universal efficiency percentage. The useful question is whether each stage can supply the next stage under the current game rules and upgrades.
Account for game-specific production limits
Satisfactory’s official production-line tutorial emphasizes matching machine production to consumption. Its examples also require checking miner output, because node purity and miner mark affect supply, and checking belt limits, because each belt has a maximum item-per-minute rate. A line can therefore fail even when the recipe math is correct: the miner may be too slow for the planned assemblers, or the belt may be carrying its maximum flow.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Factorio’s early automation guidance similarly moves from electric mining drills to belts and then to assembling machines for science, ammunition, and other items. The practical lesson is the same: calculate the complete path rather than counting assemblers alone.
Recognize the two forms of imbalance
- Starvation: a machine has no input. Inspect the previous machine, splitter, belt segment, miner, and power supply in that order.
- Backlog: a machine cannot unload its output. Inspect the next machine, storage capacity, belt saturation, and final demand.
One idle machine does not automatically justify adding another. It may be waiting for a batch, blocked by a full output, or sharing an input with a higher-priority recipe.
Use buffers deliberately
Chests or equivalent storage absorb short supply bursts and keep downstream machines running while an upstream stage catches up. Place a buffer between major production modules when their rates fluctuate or when one side is likely to be paused for construction.

A buffer has two useful signals:
- It stays empty: the upstream supply, transport, or power network cannot meet demand.
- It stays full: the downstream stage or final demand is the actual limit, so more extraction is unnecessary.
Do not fill every gap with storage. Excessive buffers hide timing problems and make it harder to see where the active bottleneck is. Use them at clear boundaries, label their role, and reserve capacity for known bursts such as construction, research, or ammunition production.
Build in modules that can be upgraded locally
Separate your factory into understandable blocks:
- Raw-material block: miners, pumps, harvesters, and the first collection belts.
- Processing block: furnaces, refineries, or other first-stage converters.
- Intermediate block: components consumed by several recipes.
- Final-product block: the item delivered to research, construction, combat, or storage.
- Energy block: generators, fuel processing, and power distribution.
Give each module a defined input and output side. Keep belts, pipes, power poles, and service paths visible. When a belt or machine upgrade becomes available, you should be able to replace one block without dismantling the entire base.
Leave physical space for a second line beside the first. Expansion is easier when the original line remains intact and the duplicate line shares only clearly chosen inputs, outputs, or power connections. A compact design that has no room for a splitter, upgraded belt, or additional machine often costs more to rebuild than a slightly larger design built with expansion space.
Scale transport only at the bottleneck
Belts have finite flow rates. A saturated belt is a transport bottleneck; an empty belt is not a reason to buy or build faster transport. Before upgrading, observe whether the constrained segment is full, whether items are arriving in bursts, and whether the destination actually needs more.
When to split or upgrade a belt
- Split a line when one source must feed several independent consumers and the current belt cannot distribute the required flow.
- Upgrade the belt when the source and destination both support a higher rate and the existing belt is demonstrably saturated.
- Duplicate the entire production module when the recipe ratio, rather than the belt, limits output.
- Move storage closer to the consuming block when long detours create congestion or obscure the actual demand.
Long-distance systems deserve a separate decision. When the game offers trains or logistic robots, they can replace sprawling belts for higher-scale or longer-range transport. Use them when distance, terrain, or throughput makes a belt corridor the limiting module, not simply because the technology is available. A transport upgrade that feeds a slow furnace does not improve final production.
Control side effects such as pollution
Factory optimization is multi-objective. Resource availability, transport capacity, power consumption, and bottlenecks interact, and a design that maximizes immediate production may create a larger strategic problem.
A GECCO companion paper on Factorio warns that focusing solely on production can increase pollution and trigger a cascade toward failure. In a game with pollution or another escalating penalty, include that effect in your expansion decision:

- Measure whether a new production block increases the penalty faster than it improves progression.
- Expand defenses, mitigation, or cleaner power before doubling high-impact production.
- Keep pollution-producing modules grouped so their consequences are easier to monitor and address.
- Prefer a stable line that meets demand over an oversized line that creates avoidable attacks, cleanup, or resource pressure.
The exact penalty rules differ by game and version, so apply the principle to the systems the title actually models.
A practical build sequence for a first automated line
- Select a repeated need. Choose the item you craft or transport most often, not the most advanced recipe on the technology tree.
- Write the chain. List raw inputs, processing steps, intermediates, final output, fuel, power, and destination.
- Place extraction. Use the best accessible node or source and connect it to a short collection route.
- Install reliable energy. Build generation and fuel handling before multiplying machines.
- Add first processing. Feed the output into a dedicated block rather than mixing it with unrelated recipes.
- Calculate ratios. Compare recipe cycle times and input requirements; start with a modest number of machines.
- Connect transport. Verify that belts, splitters, pipes, or inserters can carry the required sustained flow.
- Add one deliberate buffer. Place it between modules where it will absorb bursts and reveal whether the limit is upstream or downstream.
- Run and observe. Watch the line long enough to see both empty-input and full-output conditions.
- Duplicate only the constrained module. Expand extraction, transport, processing, power, or storage according to the evidence you observed.
Why machines keep running out of materials
If you are asking why do my machines keep running out of materials?, diagnose the failure from the machine backward instead of adding assemblers immediately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Observed symptom | Most useful checks | Likely correction |
|---|---|---|
| Several machines stop simultaneously | Power network, generator fuel, shared upstream belt | Restore continuous energy or repair the shared supply before changing recipes |
| Only the last machine in a line starves | Splitter priorities, belt saturation, intermediate production | Balance distribution or expand the intermediate block |
| Input arrives in bursts | Miner cycle, upstream machine timing, buffer size | Add a deliberate buffer or match machine counts to the actual average rate |
| Output backs up | Downstream machine, storage, final demand | Increase consumption, redirect the product, or stop extracting more of it |
| One belt appears full but machines still starve | Wrong branch, splitter configuration, belt direction, destination capacity | Trace the exact path from source to machine and correct distribution |
| Adding assemblers changes nothing | Miner output, belt limit, recipe input, power headroom | Upgrade the actual limiting module rather than the idle downstream machines |
Trace items physically when possible. Follow the line from the machine’s input to the preceding splitter, belt, processor, and miner. This is faster and more reliable than redesigning the whole base from a production graph that may omit a blocked belt or failed generator.

Use measured demand as the trigger for expansion. Build a modest reliable line, observe its behavior, and identify whether the constraint is input, machine speed, transport, storage, power, or demand. Duplicate only that module.
If extraction is the limit
Add another source or a higher-capacity miner when the game permits it. Confirm that the collection belt and power network can carry the additional output; otherwise, the new miner only moves the bottleneck one step downstream.
If processing is the limit
Add another furnace, refinery, or assembler using the same recipe and connect it to the existing input and output buses. Keep the module’s ratio visible so future upgrades do not require recalculating the entire base.

Advanced habits that keep a factory efficient
Label inputs and outputs
Use signs, color coding, or consistent belt directions to identify each module. A visible input-output convention shortens troubleshooting time and prevents accidental cross-connection when several products share a resource.
Separate high-volume and low-volume items
Bulk ores and plates deserve dedicated transport paths. Smaller components can share a bus or logistics route when the game’s limits allow it. Mixing every item on one line makes a single high-volume recipe capable of starving unrelated products.
Observe over a full production cycle
Machines may appear balanced during a short burst and then starve when a buffer empties. Watch long enough to see startup, steady operation, and output accumulation. Use the resulting pattern to distinguish a temporary burst from a sustained rate mismatch.
Keep construction access
Leave a walkable route to miners, splitters, generators, storage, and machine inputs. A theoretically compact factory can be inefficient in practice if every repair or upgrade requires dismantling adjacent lines.
Record the reason for each upgrade
Before changing a module, state the observed constraint: “the belt is saturated,” “the miner cannot supply two assemblers,” or “the buffer is full because demand is low.” After the change, verify whether that condition disappeared. This habit prevents upgrades based on appearance rather than evidence.
Common mistakes and their fixes
- Building the final machine first: trace backward to extraction and intermediate supply, then automate the earliest repeated manual stage.
- Ignoring power: include generators and fuel in the chain and provide operating headroom.
- Using storage everywhere: keep buffers at module boundaries so they reveal, rather than conceal, the bottleneck.
- Upgrading transport automatically: measure belt saturation and confirm that both source and destination can use the extra flow.
- Copying a layout between games: recalculate node output, miner tiers, recipe ratios, belt rates, and penalty systems for the specific title and version.
- Expanding because a machine is idle: determine whether it is starved, output-blocked, power-limited, or simply waiting for demand.
- Maximizing production without considering side effects: include pollution or other penalties in the expansion decision.
When to redesign instead of adding another machine
Redesign when the factory’s interfaces are unclear, when a shared belt repeatedly starves unrelated products, when storage hides the true demand, or when expansion requires dismantling several functioning modules. A redesign is justified when the recurring cost of diagnosis and rebuilding exceeds the cost of creating clear raw-material, intermediate, final-product, and energy blocks.
Keep any reliable section that already has a known rate. Rebuild the smallest module that prevents expansion, then reconnect it through the same defined input and output paths. This preserves production while improving the constraint that actually matters.
